Forgot about Len stiles, my first job was a stones throw from there so often had a lunchtime browse in there. There was also gigsounds in Streatham and Wing music in Sidcup.

This is an excellent point. Not sure what that says about us though as a species 🤔

Getting a Squier Classic Vibe bass VI to play well
Cato replied to Jean-Luc Pickguard's topic in Bass Guitars
I got one of the purple ones from Andertons a couple years ago. I bought a set of Bass VI Newtone rounds at the same time because I'd heard bad things about the stock strings and I was prepared to buy a new bridge to sort out the widely reported intonation issues. However when it arrived I quickly decided that it was fine as stock, it even took me over a year of playing it pretty much every day to put the new strings on it. The E string on the old set required a fairly gently touch, hit it too hard and it would choke out because of the low tension, but nothing that really required a big change in my picking style. The new strings, when I finally got round to fitting them sorted that, although they did make the trem a fair bit stiffer it's still completely usable, although I use it in a fairly subtle way to add a bit of vibrato. I'm not trying to do dive bombs with it. Played through my HX stomp with a ton of reverb and a touch of compression it gives me exactly the baritone 'surf' tones I bought it for. All in all one of my better purchases, I guess maybe I just got a bit lucky or the specs on that particular FSR run were slightly different to the earlier models that most of the online negativity is directed towards. -
Agreed. Especially the current cost cutting models like the Ultra II's with their skunk stripe and top mounted truss rod adjuster, the same as a Mexican bass or Squier.

I have recently (re)acquired an SB301 from the friend that I sold it to a good few years ago. The electrics have really had their day - I don't know what he's done to it but the wiring is pretty brittle and a lot of the soldering is pretty poor. I'm now thinking that because the body, neck and frets are still in excellent condition, I'll treat it to a new preamp and pickups. I don't want to go overboard but the bass is nice enough for some decent electronics so.... Recommendations please for; (a) P and J pickups that are a direct replacement and (b) a 4-pot preamp that has a bit of character to it My only other bass these days is a Ric 4003 with flats so I'm thinking that I could have rounds and go a bit more aggressive with this one? Thanks! -

I bought this recently on here, and a few days later a GK Fusion 550 came up for sale, so I bought that too. Both amps I've always wanted to try, but I can't justify keeping both. After spending time with both, the GK just delivers the sound in my head, so the Mesa has to go. This is by far the best sounding and most tube-like class D amp I've ever played. If I could afford to keep both, I would. Comes with Mesa bag and instructions. Collection from High Wycombe, or happy to discuss courier options.

Don’t forget the Sire’s are supposed to be cheap basses. Hard to remember when they punch so high above their weight but you’d expect top range Fenders to be better.

What are your irrational prejudices? I have some bonkers ones...

I use the mark bass energy. Not super bright but have a great sound and feel.

I don't know much about PJB gear but if space is really critical the One10 must be a contender. The size of the Monza puts it in Super Compact territory, and that's a whole different ball game when it comes to comparing the tone, volume and frequency range.

No one's mentioned Newtone strings, the best strings I've ever used, and as I've been playing for 60 years, I've used a lot!
