Today we kicked off the UK proceedings for World Goth Day (technically this Thursday but I managed to get our event listed) with a cheeky little in store record shop gig. I played mainly mandolin with some mandocello and a bit of a guitar (not bad for an old bassist). We had a pretty respectable crowd and I enjoyed the set. We even had a brief write up locally Deadlight Dance Devizine

Another easy one in the main but there is a stunning little solo in the middle that requires a huge amount of sensitivity and concentration - don't be deceived by what you think you are hearing, this is tricky stuff. This is a Faberge egg of a performance from Steve Swallow on the 1987 Carla Bley album 'Septet'. The tune is called 'Lawns'. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/lawns-carla-bley-septet/

Ethernet cable I can use at a gig

Thanks for the comments folks. Funnily enough I ended up returning the footswitch anyway as I decided it was an unnecessary accessory 👍 -

^ Similar with Adagio Flats on my P and T With the Outer Windings around half the peg... good job they are the larger Dia peg Sit better on the Ibby SR's as the E Peg is that bit further away, and maybe longer length behind the saddle.

£22 for two sets of D'Addario Nickel on Amazon

Seems slightly odd that long scale length is a custom set with a slightly heavier E. if you want standard long scale lights, the price goes up to £33 for a 2-pack. -
Good god and my wife wants to know why I need to have 3 basses 🤣

This is as good an explanation as you'll read. Normal Ethernet is not designed for the rigours of anything apart from sitting in an office environment not being disturbed. It's mostly solid core with a minimum radius bend. It has a outer core designed for lift shafts and trunking and once it's laid down, it doesn't expect to ever move. Patch cables are different but are not designed to move much. I wouldn't trust office Ethernet cable for more than a few weeks if it's in constant use. I have a more vocal view of the locking mechanism on Ethernet cables than @BigRedX that is wholly unprintable. This is based on being responsible for the design and management of 25,000 ports across 22 sites around London circa 1997, and when a decent intersite network was 35Mb ATM MAN connections. I still have a nervous twitch thinking about this. I think I'd rather trust a damp and frayed string holding an elephant 2m above my head than trust Ethernet in a gigging environment. I'm sure people use better cables now but I wouldn't want to use standard or cheap stuff in front of my Aunt Nellie. Anyway, @BigRedX is spot on Rob

Great compressor. Most of you will know about this one already. Really versatile with the tone print app, but also super simple with just the single knob. Is in good condition. Has a couple of marks on it, but nothing that you wouldn’t expect to see from normal usage. Includes original box. Collection is preferred, but can post for £5. Any questions just ask!

Yes, isopropyl alcohol will work, but beware with nitrocellulosic paint as it will damage it. It's better to wipe the strings with a cotton cloth as paper will certainly leave some residues, especially on round wounds. There are packs of alcohol wipes, certainly what the Ernie Balls are, but they are always more expensive than the usual bottle and cloth.

Interesting. For some reason I’ve always wanted to give them a go but have been put off by the lack of truss rod. After reading this I might get one. Don’t mind a thicker neck as I come from a DB background.

I loved my Wem Westminster, wish I'd never sold. It is about as simple as a valve amp can be so anyone should be able to sort that

Good job it wasn't an obsession otherwise it would have got well out of hand I was looking to cull my 14 (guitars and basses down) but now I think I'm simply not worthy.... Rob

According to La Bella this is ‘100% OK’ but I would prefer it if only the silks were anywhere near the tuning post - any thoughts fellow BC’ers?

Most of them were in my spare room cupboard 😀 Had at least one of every model, US and overseas, released between the years 1978 and 2010. Total was 68 basses so luckily I had a very big spare room cupboard 😁 Only 51 manage this photo op.

I saw him 2 years ago at Villa Park. 3hr set, absolutely fabulous. In my top three gigs in 40+ years. Took a couple of songs to get the sound right and (oddly) Bruce's voice to settle, but rocking after that. All having fun rather than going for super-high energy and aggression, but the band were tighter than a torqued-up tight thing. And the crowd were up for a party which fed back to the band. I bought the recording afterwards too, which just makes me smile when I play it back You'll have a blast- wish I was going

Didn't they have a sort of primitive parametric eq too? -
This is an incredibly versatile and unique pedal. It can be used to create beautiful ambient soundscapes and loops, but is also an amazing reverb, delay, modulation and more! Here's a link to the Chase Bliss website if you want to learn more about it: https://www.chasebliss.eu/mood-mkii . There are also loads of great demos of it on YouTube. I absolutely love this pedal, just don't use it enough! It's in perfect condition, not a mark on it! Comes with original box and documentation. Collection is preferred, but I can post for £10. Just let me know if you have any questions!
