NBD: Ibanez SRMD205 Mezzo 5 string. Medium scale
TanoCondor replied to fretmeister's topic in Bass Guitars
Hey guys I'm a guitarist and don't know or understand the world of bass electronics very well. I have a Mezzo 5 strings and I want to remove the preamp section and go passive. Should I replace the pots? I mean, are they only compatible with active preamps? (Since I see little PCBs on them). If so, should I have to replace all of them or maybe just some? (EG just the volume or blend). If I were to replace the blend pot and I wanted to keep the blend setup in passive mode (instead of having a volume for each pickup), which model should I buy? The same goes for the other pots (don't know if I should go for 250k or 500k or whatever). Please help me! haha I'll also replace the J Pup, probably with a Dimarzio ultra jazz. Lastly, I would try to turn it into a Jazz bass, replacing the P pickup with also a Dimarzio ultra jazz, but I would hollow out the pickup hole by hand/drill, since I dont have the right tools haha so I don't know if it would be too crazy. The thing is, I already have a 4-string PJ bass (Sire U5) and doing so would give me a more different sound...don't know what you think about it! ahah In case, I need to know how to calculate the exact new position of the jazz neck Pup, I mean the exact distance from the other one. Sorry for the madness and for my bad english! -

So do I, which is why I have an app on my tablet and a Bluetooth connected bike. I'm always trying to beat my time or trying to overtake someone or trying not to be overtaken. It takes your mind off the tedium. It's like when I was younger I hated running (still do), but put a map and compass in my hands and I was actually quite good at orienteering as it turned out - 3rd in the county for my age class one year -

I find on my Spector LT5 a good setup, good intonation and a lighter gauge string... I user a .125 Dunlop super bright gives me a lot of clarity and note all the way across the neck. I find not cranking the bass on the preamp or amp also helps and also a lighter touch helps bring more note out of the string.

What do you feel the current pickups are missing?
-
I hear these two are quite similar - my new classic vibe has SDs, but I'm just wondering were if it'd be worth me upgrading to the Gzrs for recording heavy rock/proto heavy metal tones, or should I save my money and stick to the SPB1s? Apparently the only difference between these and the Gzrs is that the latter has a bit more of an upper mid push....just wondering if I can just tweak the amp/od pedal EQ, or would it not be the same?

And I'm the opposite to you! when I'm about to play I spend 20-30 minutes doing scales and noodling, but no practice of the set on the day. All told, l average about 7 hours a day of whatever I'm working on on normal days though. -

I would say no. That bridge P will be next to useless other than to add the thinnest of flavours to something else. I built this a few years ago, interesting experiment but, in the end, there wasn't really anything in it I couldn't get close enough to from the likes of a L2000. Unless, of course, you're just playing solo in the bedroom and are feverously chasing microtonal changes. In a mix, nobody will notice how clever your pickup choices are 😄

Yes it’s great amp. I had the ABM500 Evo 1 and now the Evo 2. Love the Ashdown tone.

That will tend to remove the fundamental from every note from C on the A string downwards. In practice even with the steepest of filters there will be enough of the fundamentals present on all the notes down to low B for your brain to be able to use the non-filtered harmonics to properly detect the pitch of the notes being played.

Hi, I don’t know the song at all but if it’s any help looks like the chords are on chordify, I’ll try a link https://chordify.net/chords/ben-l-oncle-soul-songs/lose-it-chords -
If you want to design an amp driving into 2ohm loads then the first thing you'd need to do would be to double the power supply unless you are prepared to see the power produced by the amp limited by the current available. You'd also need to considerably beef up the heat sinking, although the basic design of most of the amplifier module would remain the same you'd also need to increase the power handling of the output componets to survive the extra current they would be carrying. There would be considerable expense involved in doing this right and it might well add 30-50% to the cost of production for an amp that would only appeal to a limited market. It's significant that historically a lot of 1,000W amps run parallel output stages mainly because it is as cheap or cheaper to do this than to create a 2ohm amplifier. A big beefy power supply does add funcrtionality to any amp and a well specified supply is worth having as it will also improve performance at 4ohms, to an extent you get what you pay for and power supplies are roughly as costly as amps, sometimes more so. An amp might well be advertised as 2ohm stable but if the output remains the same or is even reduced at 2ohms compared with 4ohms then what is the point?
