I play 5 string basses mainly and used all the strings when playing in a function band (I resisted 5 string basses until the keyboard player said "you wouldn't need to change bass mid set if you had a 5" lightbulb moment 😄). Now I'm in a rock band I think in 2 songs I use the B string and never use the G string at all. I could go back to a 4 string and occasionally do in rehearsals but I'm scared I'd have to sell my lovely 5s. Could you use the G string for your other passion @SteveXFR ? Are G strings any good as brake/gear cables? 😄

You would want it to give it the note to aim at for the next bar so not actually play any of your notes as you would be playing a bar ahead of the tune. Not so lazy if you can pull that off. -

Not sure how I’d cope without G strings….

It’s the same shape as their guitar headstocks which they’ve been doing for years as far as I can see

Two of the three new songs that we rehearsed today are in the list. 35 songs, of which 10 were in the list, set to rise to 38/12. -

For me it's more that I don't like the sensation of playing on the string closest to the floor whatever it's tuned to; if I play a 6 I'll find myself happily incorporating the G which I'd normally avoid on a 4 or 5. As it stands I play 5s which I mostly treat as BEAD 4s, but I can't actually use one of those because I treat them as 3s.

Great first gig of the year for me last night. New venue for us, The lion at Cas Vegas (Castleford), a well known music venue in these parts. Known as a bit of a rockers venue so booking a glam band was a bit of a punt, however it was banging with a full house and happy smiling punters. Booked back in October and already looking forward to it.

Our first gig of the new year. We played with a dep drummer on New Year's Eve, as our own drummer had a long standing arrangement for a family party in Wales. I turned up a bit frazzled after having forgotten a couple of things and having to go back home for them. The parking was difficult. We had people shutting the rear door of the venue as we were loading in which didn't help and a couple of people were getting in our way. We were a bit loose in the first half. The second half was a lot better.

The headstocks look like they've taken "inspiration" from Alpher, no? At least that's my first impression

Says he bought it 14 years ago. For the OP. If you’re thinking about selling put it in the classifieds for the price you expect.

lovely! I've a 5 94 that is amazing ... but I always forget how amazing till I play it! 1998 model I think- the original Bart pickups and a John East UniPre

Genuine and common sense tip. You want something that can be easily found on a dark stage floor/ back room. For something so expensive, they’re easily lost.

I absolutely love playing it - something closer to the “Bowie at the Beeb” version. Epic tune

I auditioned one in the Gallery. They play, feel and sound amazing but they are quite hefty even when siting down.

Now that's the best news I've heard since I got the fretted semi-hollow bass. I am a very happy man!
