No one's mentioned Newtone strings, the best strings I've ever used, and as I've been playing for 60 years, I've used a lot!

That's a blast from the past... I nearly bought one of these about... must be at least 25 years ago! I decided against it as the salesman was a total patronising arse. It was that multi-storey place on Charing Cross Road... Turnkey, I think? With those EMG upgrades that's a killer bass. Congrats!

@lemmywinks thanks! I used to have a double four, but didn’t get on with the preamp/eq - it was a lot more “traditional” sounding than the older pjb preamps, and I think this is the same for the more recent 7” combos. I ended up using a preamp pedal into the aux in to get “that” pjb sound! This was also my reason for getting the d400 head - the last of that era of preamp I think.

I’ve been through this dance with every band I’ve been in. In general, it seems to be that the less skilled the guitarist is, the louder they need to be. I’m sure that deteriorating hearing is part of the issue but a big challenge for at least two bands was the drummer’s volume - so loud that the guitars “had” to turn up, which made the drummer hit harder…. IEMs and a quiet stage are, in my view, the only answer. Sadly, the last guitarist I worked with didn’t see things the same way - which is mainly why I no longer gig*. Hats off to the OP for doing what I wish I’d done many years ago. *well, that and the fact that I’m no feckin good

What are your irrational prejudices? I have some bonkers ones...

The only time I've had anything approaching a musical collaboration with my dad was when I used some of his ashes in an old 35mm film canister as a shaker. He never had a sense of rhythm when he was alive but I gave him one after he died. 😂 -
That`s the ideal for me for a covers band set-up, the main bit being non-heavy hitting drummer, worth their weight in gold.

Crazy to think how many there were - Len Stiles in Lewisham, one on Peckham Rye, and one just around the corner from Camberwell Green. All just a walk or short bus ride away! Getting proper nostalgic now

I have the red one with white stripe. Great straps - I like how the excess is hidden when the length is adjusted.

Did you get this sorted? Preamps tubes can last for a very long time, but sometimes they crap out! JJ tubes are generally very solid and reliable

Getting a Squier Classic Vibe bass VI to play well

This is for a Squier, so I knew i'd need a metric one.
