Phil Starr started following LFsys Monaco - use for double bass.

Really interested in your experience. Declaration here: @stevie is a friend and we've shared ideas on the home build designs we've published on Bass Chat. Two or thre years ago at the SouthWest Bass Bash I took along a pair of new designs of my own for people to have a look at. I'd been following a discussion here on amplifying double bass and I thought one of them in particular would work well for DB. I ran live sound for a couple of years a very long time ago so I know all about the problems. Well I grabbed a DB player and got him to try my 8" design which did work well reinforcing the sound without overwhelming it and making it sound like a double bass. I was fgeeling pretty pleased with myself but we also had a prototype Monza there. Effectively the 10" version of the Monaco. I knew about the highly damped bass response and all the care that had gone into the crossover design and horn and driver selection and been there when some of the frequency plots had been made so I suggested we try that with the DB. It blew my little 8 out of the water, absolutely gorgeous. I know the response of the BB3 too, it isn't as flat as the LFSys and the drive units aren't as sophisticated. Keeping any resonances controlled and reducing them by 3db will give you 3db extra headroom. I'm not saying how much the difference will be in practice but I'm not surprised from the measurements that you've found it works that way. Equally the magnet systems in the Faital drivers Stevie uses are unusually powerful and keep the cone movement well damped reducing the bloom you get in a lot of commercial bass cabs which contributes to bass feedback. The price difference is irrelevant to the performance. The Monaco uses better components than the Barefaced and is a bit of a secret bargain if FRFR is what you want.

I've thought about that too but not only the horns are cut off, the upper- and end part of the centre piece (below the armrest) is also partly cut off, that makes it difficult... i think you can only use is when the body is fully covered with lacquer..

See you've got a wanted ad up for Zoom B2 Four @AlexDelores I suspect most of us only make use of a fraction of the capability of our multis, and having something you'll be able to get more out of sooner makes a lot of sense. Given you're already up to speed on the B3, your familiarity with Zoom pedals should be a big jumping off point for the B2-4, which is two generations of Zoom multifx on from the highly regarded B3, and will hopefully deliver a few useful additional features for you. Fwiw - I also fall into the PC editing camp as I find it much easier to cut and paste and tweak patches that way and definitely don't have time during gigs to be adjusting pedal parameters, given that I'm on desk duties for my sins! It was part of the reason for not migrating to the latest gen of Zoom pedals as their latest software is Apple/iOS only and the super easy to use Tonelib editing software for Zoom pedals only goes as far as the previous B1-4 model. GLWT new pedal! PS I've actually held onto the first multifx I ever bought, way back in '96 for sentimental reasons: my old Zoom 2020 😊

I wonder if giving it a picture of a 1-string bass would freak it out?

It's not a Bass Balls, they gurgle. If you listen at :30 you can hear a uniform phase or flange effect - a Bass Balls would respond to each note. -

Ah no, my poor search skills. Any mods reading this, can this thread be merged with that or deleted?

Path of least resistance, innit? Plus one of the things that tickle me about these basses is the fact that they installed the E and G tuners "upside down" to facilitate this - that's attention to detail I enjoy. Coming with me to the SWBB? Oh yeah - you know my modus operandi - "go big or go home"... at the NWBB last weekend... 12 basses, 2 amp rigs, ironmongery, cables, a BFM Omni 10 cab in a Mitsubishi Colt and I could still see out the back window...

Thanks! It's part of a set of illustrations I did of my band to go on the back of the CD copy of our latest single "Robert Smith's Eyes" The CD version has added googly eyes to match what I did on the front cover: And as we're a post-punk/goth influenced band the 80s look was very appropriate.

Sounds just like a bass balls to me -
See you there mate.

Wow. The only Wilkes bass I've ever laid hands on was a fretless with the big slap plates in the fingerboard, that was a proper monster. This looks gorgeous. What's the string spacing at the bridge? Looks like 17 or so in the pics?

Oh thank god. You see so many of these lovely basses with the E and G strung all to cóck at the headstock (generally as per the red lines below), so you have restored my faith in human nature by doing it properly. Thank you thank you thank you. Will you be bringing this wee cutie to the SWBB?

That's a very cool 80's-esque look you have going on there. Are you auditioning for a Depeche Mode reboot?

HeadlessBassist replied to neepheid's topic in Bass Guitars
No, you're not talking nonsense at all. Whenever you play either a headless bass, or an instrument with a small/thin headstock, you really do feel the lack of mass going through your left hand/wrist compared to other basses. And the centre of gravity really does shift significantly. I find these days that even my light weight ash Jazz seems to neck dive a little. It also makes you fly around the neck a littler faster. But maybe that's a myth too -
