Wood sealer before paint? Dumb question alert.
Joe Nation replied to fretmeister's topic in Build Diaries
Depending on how thick the wrap is, I would expect it to show some surface imperfections underneath - probably not swirl marks or orange peel, but any scratch deep enough to feel with your fingers. Ideally you'll want the paint to be as close to perfect as you can get, as if it were the actual finish - but OTOH I've never done a wrap myself except really basic hobbycraft-type stuff, proper professional-grade materials might cover better. The key to a good finish, as always, is good prep. -

Great to hear of your good experience at Bowspeed. You should definitely try orchestral playing, I've done a couple of play days which are great fun, low pressure and great experience. There's always other players there so you can "hide" in the section 😅I'm doing one next month in Crewkerne - a movie themed day - should be a lot of fun! Pickups to upgrade P bass to Stingray / GL sound.
Sean replied to Bassbooksbikes's topic in Repairs and Technical
Yes, you can pretty much achieve those sounds with the right pickups, placements and pre-amps. You'd need some routing work done for the pickup and also possibly the battery for the pre-amp. It would require a new pickguard too I imagine. To do the job well and professionally would cost in my estimation: £50-100 - pickup £50-100 - routing £50-200 - pre-amp £50-100 - labour and then you'd have a Fender P that was no longer a Fender P and its market value and resellability would plummet. A used G&L Tribute L2000 at £350-ish would be cheaper, easier and more sellable if things didn't work out. There are low-cost Stingray alternatives out there but I don't know much about that particular style of bass. -
Venue: Played at the George III in Hoddesdon for their annual music festival on Saturday night. Heard some really good bands over on their second stage, then took to the main stage ourselves before the headline act. Gear: Played my Stingray through my Boss ME-80B and there was a Fender Rumble 500 provided. I put the Rumble on the "bright" setting with the EQ all centred hoping that would give me the most transparent sound, then used the amp Sims on my Boss unit. I occasionally used some fuzz or distortion but the rig absolutely sang. I was really pleased with the sound considering it was plug n play and I haven't used a Rumble before, also amp SIMs on pedals can often clash with Amps... Set: We jumped straight in with "I bet you look good on the dancefloor" and kept the feel of each song being a 'finisher' throughout. It's a great place to play because you've got a clientele who love their live music and will sing and dance along to everything. No gig photos available yet but I did manage this snap...

Small "Hifi" amp head recommendations sought!
andyhaines replied to andyhaines's topic in Amps and Cabs
Final questions for @Hellzero and the other GR Bass one users: can you confirm that there is an input clip light? The manual says that it is the power LED on the right hand side but I’ve not seen it demonstrated in any demos. Similarly the manual states that the various LED settings have a VU meter mode (which could be useful) but in reality this seems to be more of an aesthetic light show. -

Clarity and the ability to hear yourself when you're close to it in a full band situation. This text from the website sums it up... "engineered to operate at a low enough frequency to avoid the off-axis midrange suckout found in almost all commercial bass cabs. This midrange "dip" is why it is often difficult to hear your bass clearly when you're standing above or to the side of your rig. With LFSys, you experience exactly what you're playing, even when standing right beside your cabinet. No need for stands, tilting or boosting the mids – your sound remains consistent wherever you are. Your band members will hear you effortlessly and your audience will hear every nuance of your bass sound." That is what made the difference for me. It's like a secret weapon.

I'm bumping this thread because I'm a fan of this album. It turned on lots of my, previously unused, musical taste buds as a teen. It certainly had influenced me when I chose bass as an instrument a couple of years later. As mentioned above, I bought the original release on vinyl. During a house move I recorded a lot of my vinyl onto good quality four track cassette. The tape is now quite audibly degraded. I was delighted to see that the band had re-released their album on CD. I had quite a little adventure getting a hold of a legitimate copy, heeheehee. There's a bit of speech on there that felt a kinda scifi to my young ears but it was backwards. On the vinyl version you could reverse spin it to understand the opening to track 2 - At the Gates. It's not something that you'd normally be able to do on a disc player however. I thought I'd just drop this here for laughs. Visitor2035SmallStep.mp3

Bought in the hope i could get away with 30 all valve watts but unfortunately not. Brand new JJ EL84’s fitted and comes with a spare set of EH valves. Really nice amp and tone to die for - if i could have this tone with more power id be in heaven! Collection from Bolton or could do a meet up. Could cut a deal if you want the ABM 4x10 ive also advertised on here

That’s an idea! I will try and make a control plate from an off cut of sapele I have or may some walnut? I was going to use the lower part of a pickguard as a template.

Barefaced Big Twin 2 Gen 3 or 2 x BB3 stack
Paddy Morris replied to Paddy Morris's topic in Amps and Cabs
For me, the BF FRFR cabs are like running a 12" cab but with an attached sub. Despite the paper specification being the same, the Barefaced have a more pronounced bottom octave compared with LFsys. So depending on what instrument you're playing, and what kind of music you're playing, and what venue you're playing, that might be a plus or a minus. For an outdoor gig a Monaco with a BB (presumably also a Big Twin?) gives you a nice focused sound, but with a big of LF thump you can feel in your chest. But in problematic small pub, or on a bare wooden floor, or a stage with difficult acoustics, that bottom octave from the Barefaced can be a bit of a liability. Whereas the Monaco low end doesn't sound subjectively as extended, but it really stays tight and punchy and well damped. They are both lovely cabs, but different in style. BF slightly louder. LFsys tighter and more controlled. -

My final foray into modelling/digital rigs (for now)... this has been my favourite but that world is just not for me. Used for 3 shows and well looked after! Comes with a far tougher power supply (original included). Price includes UK shipping, collection welcome or I may well be coming near you! The only thing i'd consider in trade at the moment is an Ashdown CTM30 as i miss mine dearly!
