I understand from people who know such things that given the levels of incompetence and laziness in most large organisations, when things like this happen no matter how deliberate it might seem, there’s 99.9% chance it’s a cockup, 0.1% chance it was planned 👍

I have been wanting to get some of this guy's stuff down on paper for a long time (I have an excerpt on here somewhere). I came across this one today. It is a duet with French lute/therebo player Claire Antonini. The important thing to note here is that Garcia-Fons plays a five-string double bass with a high C (not a low B) so that means there are some very high notes and a lot of the chart is written 8va. For transparency's sake, I should tell you that I tune my own five-string double bass the same way as RGF which is one of the reasons I am drawn to this guy. I understand why you might think that but from my experience of RM/PF, their tracking is cr4p at best. I received a bass via them and it was still showing as being at the drop off point... hours after it was delivered to me. Conversely I had to enquire about a bass which I posted (insured 3rd party) and I was told that they concede since some form of RM/PF amalgamation that the system wasn't communicating as it should!

I have now had an email from Wellers saying it's still in transit back to the consignee and I should hear back early next week about getting it back. I won't be convinced until I actually receive it. I'll do an update next week. Interparcel and Parcel/Force are doing a criminal investigation into its disappearance, as are the Police. I'm not going to give up o this and will continue to make as much fuss about it as possible. The fact is, when I dropped it off at my local Post office, I had it bleeped and got an drop off receipt, but the tacking didn't automatically update. it never did. i think a PF employee spotted this and decided they could steal it and sell it - just my though.....

Where does it fit in the soundscape, so to speak? Presumably you’ve got to play it with a plectrum, but I can’t think how the ‘jangle’ works an octave below your average 12 string guitar?

Buying and Importing from Japan

Bought from Ishibashi a couple of times. No issues. First bass I didn't pay any duties on, the second one I did. No idea why as values of each exceeded £800.00. Comms were good, however I'd say that they Ishibashi do/did employ the services of someone with a decent grasp of English. I wouldn't buy anything where there's a broker type thing going on, you know, those adverts on eBay where there's dozens of people in Japan 'selling' the same thing, even though this process is all supposed to be above board there (gawd knows how they navigate the minefield of multiple purchases), -

I was considering the same (defretting a 4 string Jazz) and instead Bernie Goodfellow made me a new lined neck, which feels fabulous. I can swap the original back quickly and easily if I ever feel the need. The new neck was made to his usual impeccable standards and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out.

Yep I’ve decided to go for this approach, some bits - the parts to me that stand out - I’m doing note for note, mainly verse, chorus and some rundowns, the rest I’m near but keeping to the feel.
