Well the Picato trademark is still owned by Strings and Things Ltd, so no new owner per se. There seems to be a re-brand in progress with the tag line "Musicians Strings Since 1953", with no British or "Made in UK" branding (at least from what I can see - could be wrong!) The Strings and Things site shows packs of strings with both new and old branding, so maybe it's just that they haven't updated some of the old brand collateral yet, or there is plenty of British made NOS they have yet to shift.

That's a great idea. Might stop people tripping over them. 👍 Dave

My main band plays for charity in the sense that the fee the band charges goes mostly to a chosen charity or charities (we get a say at the start of the year) with the balance going to the upkeep of the village hall in which we rehearse for free and to fund band purchases such as PA, travel etc. Almost all of our gigs are private functions for which we are booked and charge a fee. Occasionally we will lower or waive the fee if the gig is itself a charity event. A few years ago we took a gig for an alleged charity weekend for which we were recompensed with a token for half a pint of cider. Afterwards it appeared to have been more of a promotional festival for a local business. I explained to the band that if asked, I wouldn't be doing it again. Indeed, the band were asked the following year and I didn't play, although some others did. The band have since decided not to do it again. I'm not averse in principle to playing charity gigs for which I end up out of pocket. As someone has said above, it's like a donation and that's fine. But just like cash donations there's a limit to what I can afford and so lengthy travel, unusual expenses or other less definable elements will play a big part in my decision of whether or not to play. And, of course, the charity cause will also have an influence. In previous bands I have played paid and unpaid charity gigs. Usually it was at the request of one band member as a favour for a particular cause. In one case we played for exposure (in fairness the organising venue didn't try to persuade us with the line but we recognised the opportunity) and we did get another paid gig from it. In other cases, while not looking for it we have taken bookings at or following charity gigs which have more than covered any expenses.

No serial on neck plate, so at least that part is later 1976 or beyond. Given the pots are from 11th week of 1977, then that the bass is later than that. But all this assumes the parts are from the same bass, which is difficult to know. I would probably be pricing the bits individually for that reason.

As the owner of a 77 Leftie, it all looks kosher, except the pick up and control cavity look like they've been routed for different pickups/controls.

A mixed box of stuff laying around. Selling as one lot. 3 old Mex Strat pickups one not working, no idea which. Luthier did tell me but I didn't mark or separate it. I changed all three. 5 string jazz P/U (100mm x 17mm ( think it's from a Cort but can't swear) plenty of wire. 5 string MM type P/U (105 x 48) same as above. A couple of odd straplocks (strap end) An Alessi Microverb. Does work perfectly but no PSU Fender Jazz type P/U cover A 70's/80's Satellite Les Paul body & neck. No pickups but Knobs, neck plate and bridge in the box. (95% of these were Japanese (Matsumoku) but a last few were Korean £45 for the whole lot, plus whatever the cheapest form of postage costs. Welcome to collect though. If you only want the one gold strap-lock or one knob, it's still £45, but you will also get the rest.

@funkgod Good to hear you got a working set in the end. I wear glasses and if I put the ear pads over the arms I lose all the bass. I have to hook my glasses over the headphone at massive angle. then my eyelashes wipe the lenses and make them blurry. Doh. Happy mixing and monitoring.

I don't mind playing for nothing, i.e. losing money, if the charity is close to home. Alzheimer's or some such. Generally though I'd ask for a bit of petrol money, 20 quid is better than nothing. We did a charity gig some time ago and I was expecting just expenses but they gave us a pretty substantial wedge. I stuck some of it in one of the collecting buckets on my way out the door.

Maruszczyk Mr. Tee - Short Scale Bass (30"). Picked up in a trade from @andybassdoyle in 2025 (super bloke!) - it's a fantastic bass but I'm not finding myself reach for it when I'm off to gigs and it's a shame to have it sitting in it's (included Hiscox hard) case. 5 string, currently setup E - C. A superb, light weight bass. Looks stunning and plays amazingly. Piezo bridge + magnetic pickup with Richter electronics in. Controls are: 1) Volume/pan between piezo and mag pickups 2) Bass/treble with push/pull on the treble for passive bypass. 3) Mid/mid frequency Originally fretless, professionally fretted by a previous owner. This video shows the bass when it was new: Full spec as per the original build is: Scale Length Short Scale 30" Number of Frets 20 Frets Body Construction Hollowbody Body Wood Alder Top Wood Eye Poplar Veneer Walnut Color Type Natural Body Binding Without Binding Body Finish Gloss Pickguard 3ply Cream Neck Wood Flamed Maple Neck Finish Matte Neck Profile Modern C Nut Width 40mm Carbon Rods No Fingerboard Wood Macassar Ebony Fingerboard Radius 14'' Headstock Type Matching Headstock (Natural) Headstock Finish Gloss Headstock Logo Silver Nut Black Pickup Combination Single Coil (SSC) Manufacturer Bassculture Pickup Finish Pickguard Color Neck Pickup Bassculture SSC 'Cream' Hardware Color Chrome Knobs Type Dome-Style Tuner Type Standard Y-Style Security Locks Without Security Locks String Type Flatwound ------ Available to view / test / collect from Exmouth, Devon. Bumping this thread again. It looks like Picato strings are still being produced and in the UK. Does anyone know who the owner is? Has anyone tried their rounds or flats recently?

Dear Basschatters, I have a P bass body, along with original pots, neckplate (and bolts) and knobs, pickup screws (they look old but I'm aware they're just a bonus!), strap and bass case that I believe to be from a 1977 Fender Precision bass. I have some pickups too but they don't have any serial numbers or markings so I am not sure they are from the same bass. I am looking to sell the body and parts but I'd love to know if anyone can help identify the body especially. The pots are from 1977 and the body looks to be from then too but any help would be hugely appreciated. And any estimates on a price for it (as a package with everything or stand alone) would be hugey appreciated! Best wishes, Sam P.s @Reggaebass kindly suggested I put this on here so thanks to them for the heads up!

I normally have a rule about just buying gear that I like and not buying gear for a particular project and once again I have proven to myself why I should stick to that rule. 😔 In summer 2024 my main band decided to go entirely IEM. In autumn 2024 I was fired by that very band. In that time I did somewhere between 5-10 gigs with it. As such, my over £1000 of IEM rack has sat unused for the past year. I have held on to it for a while now but none of my current bands show any interest in going IEM and to be honest I have a hearing defect in one ear caused by a botched surgery when I was a kid that makes wearing headphones a little uncomfortable so that suits me just fine. I don't do things by halves and I put a lot of research into this before I bought it. Obviously you can spend car or even house money on the kinds of IEM systems that the pros use on big tours and this isn't that, but then it's not some budget Aliexpress dongle either. Think RCF pa speakers that sit in the goldilocks zone between Mackie and L'Acoustics. It's a nice prosumer system that works exceptionally well in a very neat 2u rack. I do have some IEMs but they are not the kind of thing that I would be comfortable selling (and expecially buying) second hand because they have been inside of me. For the record I was using this system with the very decent Shure SE215 but it's a standard output that will work pretty much anything out there. As it stands this is a stereo system so youi can have different mixes in each ear, but it can also be run mono. Anyone who has ever seen my gear will tell you that I am super-annoying with organisation and neatness. This rack has strain relief buit into the cables, everything is cable tied down to the shelf. The input loom coils up into the back of the rack. The power cables are tidied away. You get to a gig, take the lids of the rack, plug it into the wall and plug it into the mixer. 60 seconds, tops. When you do it will light up and you'll have a few spare sockets to plug the rest of your stuff into. I'm selling the whole rack as a complete system for £650. If you wanted just the IEM system (transmitter, receiver, power supply and rack ears) with none of the accessories that would be £550. I would however encourage anyone new to IEM to go for the whole system as if you do that then it's a turn key solution with all of the hard work done for you. Add headphones of your choice and go. Even if you're not in a brightly lit pop punk band and you turn the light bars off! Pickup from between Wylam and Newcastle. I can deliver locally or I can post. Please get in touch with any questions.
