If you want to use a port with a square cross-section rather than a round one, I think you just need to make the length and the cross-section area the same. So if the area of the circle (pi * r^2) was say 25 cm^2 then a 5 x 5 cm square port of the same length should give you the same tuning. By ‘slot port’ I understand a slot in the baffle with no extra depth behind it and I believe the dimensions of that are harder to calculate correctly, especially if the slot is at one end of the baffle. Can you sketch what you had in mind, and is there a particular reason not to use a cylindrical port? Personally I’d just go with the latter, I found it easy enough to construct.

sshorepunk started following Geddy Lee Jazz Project - carbon fibre content!

I’ve had a Japanese Geddy ale body hanging around for a while, did contemplate selling it at one point but never got round to it, then I started looking at a few options for it I did consider until very recently a fretless neck, I did see a mex’ neck for sale recently but didn’t take it any further The local Cello player tried to persuade me to sell it and he had a Japanese 70’s neck lined up for it in the meantime a very neglected Mexican jazz bass came into my possession for some much needed TLC, so I borrowed the neck off it and it worked well, but only a short term solution as the neck needs to go back from where it came at some Point so I continued to casually look for an alternative This came up last week, a Klos carbon neck, slightly unusual looking compared to a traditional neck with the 3+1 head stock and off set position markers but it appealed to me, after some research a deal was done It’s a very wet and windy day in Manchester so a good day to play with necks After I told the local cello player what neck I’d night, he did suggest adding a black pick guard, sounds like a good idea, so if you have one knocking about, let me know

Thanks @Bass Direct Not getting into the more complicated aspects of this, just sad that someone waited a few months for their custom order and NBD was a washout. I’d be gutted, and it’d be awesome if we managed to find it for them.

About the fit, I forgot to mention that many many in ears are not comfortable for me. I probably have weird ears. And the Plunge are not the most comfortable for me, but they are comfortable. And yes, I agree about the lottery. I have too many in ears that confirm that haha. But I have to say that if I have to recommend one set, the Plunge will be one of the first I would suggest.

Choose a 5 string bass for £500 (ish)

I almost forgot about this thread .. Fwiw about 20 years ago I purchased a Schecter stiletto elite 5 . Never played a 5’er before and bought it on impulse in Sound Control. It was a great bass , but seeing as I was gigging at the time on 4 strings I stupidly sold it a few years later ! That bass and Schecter in particular seem to have a good reputation, and you’d probably get one either new or used for the price you want. I prefer headless though and if I was going to try a 5’er again I’d probably go for the cort space 5 for the price . -

Yes, there are scandals in many churches and organisations, and if it was caused by just one or two individuals, then as long as they’re dealt with appropriately, then I can move on with them. But when it’s systemic & part of their culture, to still support it is complicity. CCW is a massive business & has more to do with selling to an audience rather than praising god. Especially when it’s coming from a mega church. You can’t separate a creator from their product unless the product has been separated from the creator. I boycott a lot of products (some of which I really miss) because of who their creator/owner is and what they do. I’m not one for knowingly funding atrocities & will try to encourage others to look to their own morals & do the same. There’s plenty of options. Don’t be force fed into funding the worst.

How was your open mic or jam night last night?
knirirr replied to tauzero's topic in General Discussion
Some of them, particularly singers, turn up with something they particularly want to do (often the same each time), but there are plenty of instrumentalists who are happy to play on anything. Changing people over is a faff (the space is quite cramped) so when singers come up they are often allowed to do a couple of tunes; horn players will be invited to come up for these. This jam is one of the reasons I took up playing guitar again. We started getting some bass guitarists looking for jazz practice, so I thought I could do a little guitar whilst they were up. Then, once I'd got into it, jazz guitarists started turning up as well (N.B. the guitarist mentioned above is not a proper jazz guitarist, as their answer might suggest ;-). BTW, in addition to our jazz jam there are two folk/acoustic sessions and one open mic night in the town per month as well. -

No, but I've been in a couple of situations where the ground lift has been essential for a useable sound, both with double bass. I think the new Laney Nathan East pre would be worth a look, there's an excellent review by @Dood in the Reviews section.

How was your open mic or jam night last night?
nekomatic replied to tauzero's topic in General Discussion
Do your soloists generally turn up with one tune that they simply must play, or are they flexible about playing on any tune that they know? The organiser of the jam I go to seems pretty good about sorting people out so everyone gets to play on something, even if it’s not always their first choice. That and not letting anyone drag a solo out for too many choruses. Still, being too popular is a good problem for a jazz jam to have! -
So sorry to see this, if we get offered anything here I will let you know immediately

It's kind of Basschat lore to always opt for UPS Premium when using Interparcel as musical instruments are covered that way. I hope that there's a happy ending to this tale...🤞
