Stub Mandrel started following How do you learn songs?
-
My approach varies depending on how well I know the song (in a general sense). I recently learned Jean Genie. I've busked it at jams a few times and know the structure simply from having heard it a lot. I had to learn the proper details, especially around the chorus but it was fairly straightforward. On the other hand although I 'knew' keep on running it was not well and I was surprised by the complexities in the verse and chorus... especially the changes in syncopation. Plus there were several different tabs so I had to decide which was most accurate. I broke it down into sections. I did one ir two play throughs at half tempo to make sure I had the rhythm right. Then it was brute force... start at the beginning and see how far I could get. My two rules... 1) if I keep making a mistake stop, slow right down and get it righ. Practising a mistake is never a good idea. 2) walk away, ideally sleep on it. You will always be better on returning to . Combine the two approaches. Accuracy at the expense of speed, plus a chance for your brain to process the learning = much faster and more accurate next time around. So my learning is usually many songs in parallel, rather than one at a time. Currently learning 34 songs - a soundcheck, two 15 song sets, and 3 encores. Luckily most I already know or am familiar with and many (but not all) are reasonably straightforward.

I found the MXR Blowtorch to be particularly nuts, and they can be found quite cheap. Was going to ditch mine until I was just messing about with it and put the middle and treble on full (frequency switch to the right, can’t remember the numbers), bass at about 11 o’clock. And you can blend it too.

I have a 4-string, bolt-on version of this and will say that it's a fantastic bass. Some might say that the rounder body shape is more comfortable than the angular S-II style. I find that there is a little more growl compared to its graphite-necked siblings while still being capable of bright zingy tones if desired. Someone will be getting a lot of bass for the money. Oo! In that case I'll take two of them. -
Google translate strikes again. With apologies if the intended humour has just gone over my head, I’ll defend the seller’s entirely appropriate use of the German word Koffer in this context to mean hard case (as well as its more common meaning of suitcase). Though maybe I shouldn’t be tangling with someone with self-confessedly big hands…

I bought this so that I could run both outputs of my Yamaha Attitude into it at the same time. However, I’m using my Spector into a B7k for pretty much everything now so I’ve taken this off my board. It’s very flexible, the ability to dial clean tone back into your signal means no bottom end loss. Comes with original box and instructions. Has a couple of very small paint chips, which I’ve tried to capture in the photos, but works perfectly. Has Velcro on the underside. Price includes UK Mainland postage

Recently added a Darkglass B7k to my board, so this is surplus to requirements. In good condition, works perfectly. Gives a nice vintage tone as you would expect, but can also get very gnarly. Has Velcro on the bottom. Comes with the original box and instruction sheet. Price includes mainland UK postage

Strict Machine - Goldfrapp

This is as hard-hitting as Lucinda’s songs, and to be frank it’s a wee bit too honest. But that makes it compelling reading, so if you like her music it’s a solid investment. If you don’t know who she is, consult YouTube immediately… Hardback, very good condition. RRP £20, yours for £13 posted. Now just £11.

Mahler and Elgar (amongst others) didn't seem to know the normal range of a double bass 😂. I doubt extensions existed back then either. I've had to retune to DADG or CGDG on occasion ..a friend has a BEADG 5 string which is the best way to go. Extensions are awkward and ugly imo. No fan of Mahler anyway. But T&G Martin make some lovely basses ..if yr loaded enough.

Well that's it.... the final gig in Pakistan for me and a big farewell to all my musician buddies here. Played with three of my bands tonight (singer away in the fourth unfortunately), a bit of bass and a bit of drums. Punk, 80s cover and Hendrix/blues. All my gear packed away so hired a drum kit and borrowed basses. It was a great jam and very emotional. Fly out of here tomorrow. Hopefully will find some equally amazing musicians in Riga but will miss these guys.
