He (and the rest) are exaggerated personalities because that's what works online. (If you're being pedantic, you'd also suggest he changes his website because he claims to be "European Bass Player of the Year 2020" – when in fact he only won an online competition.)

It just proves how gullible Joe Public really is. As we know from being performers of various levels of ability, Joe Public just likes a nice tune, usually a nice tune he knows. It doesn’t matter if you’re terrible or amazing. They don’t know the difference. You can have perfect technique, sound and chops. It doesn’t matter to them. You can have the most horrendous technique, terrible sound, and no chops and they’ll still love it when you play something they know. They’ll love it even more if a young lady flashes some pretty flesh. How’d you think Stock Aitken & Waterman made so much moolah in the 80’s?

 

I always remember the two old hecklers at a Thursday night Jam in Carlton, Nottingham several decades ago. If you were good they’d shout, “Play something we know!” If you were truly awful, it’d be “Play something YOU know!”

 

As for Sapko, I’m left wondering who’s taking the urine out of who? After all, he’s making plenty of YouTube money out of hot air and fake outrage. Good luck to them all, I say. I’m off to watch Hoovie’s Garage. “Wiiiiizard…”

I mean we could moan all we like about people pretending to play an instrument, but if a handful of people are inspired to pick up an instrument, then that's quite worthwhile.

I don’t really have a problem with her - it’s his faux outrage that I find irritating. And increasingly common all over social media.

TBH these days I don't attend any gigs that I'm not actually playing, because I'm simply too busy with my own music.

 

The last gig I played had about 350 people in the audience, and while they hadn't all come specifically to see us, most of them were watching the stage while we were on rather than at the bar.

 

I might possibly go and see The Birthdays Massacre when they play at The Rescue Rooms in Nottingham but I'm still hoping that my band will land the opening slot.

Once you get beyond promoting your next gig or your mates mates posting their holiday snaps most social media is fakery to some extent.

 

Whether it's lifestyle influencers faking an idyllic, carefree existence or the fitness fanatics who enthuse about a healthy lifestyle while neglecting to mention their own heroic steroid intake, or the straight up thieves trying to steal your money with crypto scams.

 

Even most of the funny animal clips are clearly staged.

 

Add in that posting content can also be highly lucrative and it's not that suprising that a lot of content creators don't seem to know or much care where the moral boundary is between presenting the best version of yourself and outright deception.

 

I'm not sure a lot of the audience it's aimed at is that bothered either, right up to the moment the outrage bandwagon starts rolling.

To put it another way, my friend is a top-tier bassist who gets to play with one of the most famous bands in the world, but his follower numbers are absolutely dwarfed by pretty people who know how to put out for the camera.

I do think it IS getting harder to convince the “I won’t pay for music” crowds the value of what we do. It’s bad enough trying to get a “like” and a “share” for slaving for hours over a video editor!

If you play something that's quite close to the recording that they have in their head, they'll mentally supply all the other bits. Get too far from the original and the gears will start to grind though.

It's debatable whether she does. I have to say, I find her vid's hilarious. They're so obviously mimed tripe that anyone who is fooled only has themselves to blame. Given the subject of the post, I have to admit I wasn’t specific referring to this person - these videos are so obviously mimed and, not knowing anything else about her, I’d love to think she was just taking the piss out of “influencers” and the entire audience commenting are in on the joke. Maybe the lesson links take you off to the ultimate shred rickrole or something!

 

but I fear that maybe a parallel universe where honest politicians and common sense and critical thinking skills thrive.

 

I’m not long for social media, it’s turning in to more effort than it is worth.
