The Future of SBL - Wrong Answers Only

It occurs to me, Mr. Devine isn't on here by any chance? I haven't got to worry about him hunting me down, kidnapping me with his best buddy and stowing me away in his cellar have I?

SBL Podcast #120 - Scott and Ian reveal who they recently kidnapped! 45 minutes after the podcast started. They make the mistake of taking my gag off and I start shouting over them about how they can raise Jaco from the grave so he can kiss my moonlit gothic donkey! Ian stabs me through the heart with a vintage P bass and they livestream them burying me under the Armley Gyratory. It becomes their most watched podcast ever!

Maybe he will stop all the bloody jazz noodling and will never again mention holding down his low end. All jazz and blues based lessons will be replaced with grime and viking metal. Scott will be raising his glove game with a pair of welders gauntlets. All instructors will be playing BC Rich Warlocks through a Boss Metal Zone

As a bassist I feel a level of gratitude for the start SBL gave me as a complete beginner on bass.  I paid for this, of course, but I consider this to be money very well spent.

As the owner of a couple of businesses, I both admire Scott for what he has built and also understand he must be constantly thinking of and trying new things to keep SBL relevant.  More and more bassists are flogging lessons online, particularly since the pandemic and Scott has to keep ahead or his business could fold.  It isn't a one man band with a couple of hard drives full of lessons, he has employees that require salaries and several well known/semi famous bassists that work for a fee.  The business must need a certain amount of new members every month to keep afloat and this requires a very prominent online presence.  Youtube and algorithms being what they are, short videos with photo of Scott or someone else looking daft with his mouth open is part of the game, as are regular emails.

I would imagine SBL's bread and butter are novice bassists.  Most of Basschat's membership are not novices any more and possibly wouldn't be the main targets of SBL's  marketing.  I'm sure Scott is aware that SBL marketing may irritate some but ultimately, if it is working and the subscriptions keep coming in, he can live with that.  He has a family to feed after all.

Good luck to him.

The downside of his successful marketing is that if you watch one of his videos then for the next three months you cannot escape from his adverts. I now actively avoid anything to do with SBL because I don't want months of smug jazz noodling adverts from the beanie and glove enthusiast.

I tried his lessons and found it really boring so gave up. I know jazz and soul contain all the fundamental skills and techniques but when you're a metal head or punk, it very quickly becomes a chore. It wasn't for me.

Jazz noodling adverts are better than some of the alternatives

It's less effort to just not watch the beanie wearing, reliced p bass sporting, F# dorian 7 add 9 sus 3 noodling, low end holding down tool.

Jazz noodling is never better than anything. I'd rather hear Coldplay or even Nickelback.

On internet adverts? You’re kidding me?

what about that guy in a swimming pool saying how much money he made with some thing, or the heating system so good they want to make it illegal, or the binoculars, or currently I’m getting a Turkish textile mill who do something but I’ve skipped by them…

I'm currently getting Auto Autodesk CAD software and Yamaha motorcycles and occasionally viagra which I think may be due to looking at things popular with gentleman during mid life crisis (fast cars, fast bikes, bad back treatments, real ale and old rock music.

Scott's Rock Lessons. Where Scott tries playing a simple 4/4 riff with no plinking and plonking and his head explodes.

He could have Jools Holland in as a guest for that one.

I listen to the PodCasts and think they're pretty good. Especially when they go off in a tangent.

Like BassChat, there's only so many times you can discuss theory, tone, strings, amps and basses. It's good to hear real stories of gig experiences and other everyday nonsense and opinions.

The recent one about travelling with your bass was good.

And the pair of them do have a good rapport, plenty of other podcasts don't really have that.

He has an account but I don't think he's actively reading the forums.
