If you had an Ibanez Fairy Godmother

I've never owned an Ibanez, which is a bit odd perhaps since I started playing bass in '73.

So I don't know the geneology or taxonomy of all the different models past and present. One day, I might get a fretted four string again, and if I did I might try an Ibanez.

So, free of any reality, if your fairy godmother could wave her wand and give you ANY Ibanez 4-string, regardless of value, what would it be and why?

The SR500 is very highly rated for its price. (£450ish)

They do a 505 5 string and a 506 6 string that look similar.

In answer to your money no object question, maybe a SR5000E. :)

One of the new Exotic Wood acoustic basses- cos they look really nice. I don't really dig their electric basses much tbh.

i've already got an SR500 (which would be my first choice), and i don't really like the way any of the higher end soundgears look, so i'd go for an ATK310 in white. my dad used to have a natural atk305 and i loved it. bloody heavy though. or maybe an old roadster, which ive never played but they look cool.

Probably a 2615B Artist:

http://www.ibanez.co.jp/anniversary/313/4.jpg

Or perhaps a 2388B/DX, early version with full width sparkly inlays, or a Black Eagle, or a 2364B Dan Armstrong copy, or...

I like old Ibbys, I do. :)

That is just awesome. A totally original design made out of bits of copy basses. Have you ever seen one for real?

wow, thats really cool looking. im not sure i'd like the sound (liking a more modern, very trebly clicky sound, but with lots of bottom end rumble there, too) but just for looks i'd give it 10/10

Funny thing is, despite looking like old Gibbo mudbuckers, those old Japcrap pups are single-coils & very bright sounding. Great-looking bass but rare as the proverbial.

Never seen one in real life, I think I've seen two on Ebay (in living memory) & both sold for frankly ludicrous money.

I'll be keeping an eye out at the car boot next week though. :)

I have their SRX500

which I really like. If I could have any dream Ibanez (and I know this is not really on topic, nor helpful), I would have this one but with different pickups (pref ones which are a standard shape, so aftermarket pickups would fit) and a better preamp/control layout. I'd also want it in white.

I love Ibanez basses. Whenever I'm going through a can't-be-arsed-to-play-bass phase (like now, I'm afraid), I just pick up my Ibanez and remember why I like playing bass so much.

[Edit to add: ...because their necks are pure joy, the balance and weight are near perfect and so on. Ibanez basses feel like they were designed just for me. I like all of them!]

TBH I think the £7300 Musician looks like they got a lot of nice individual parts & then just stuck them together without any thought going into it. I wouldn't buy it at £730 let alone that price.

My SR1000 is one of the best sounding basses I've ever played (it's why I bought it, not for the looks as the one I tried in shop was pink & had to order the colour that I wanted) & I like the shape of the bass.

I have one of those acoutics. Looooooverly sounding thing, lovely to play. The build isnt great thought. The soundhole isnt even perfectly round on mine! But it does sounds nice. Gigged it a lot. Takes AA batteries though! Have you ever heard such a crazy thing!

But I would sell my left nut for a SR1000EFM NTF should the Ibanez Fairy Godmother not bring me one. SR500 are awesome though. I may get an SR506 to replace the SR406 that I once had and loved, but traded for my trusty P Bass :)
I like my SRX700, it's great!
I enjoyed my (luthite) EDB 600 before I broke it by dropping it...
Otherwise, An MC924 (fretted)
An old (c.1980) Roadster or Roadstar- Make that both!
And I could be tempted by one of those ATKs with a neck "J"
ooh i forgot about SRX700s, they're brilliant looking basses. never played one though.

Blazers come up on ThiefBay quite often.

But that ATK - I wish I'd had the £99 it cost when I spotted it on Ebay a year ago. Oh well, my loss is... my loss, actually. :)

I have that same bass, always sounds great when I plug it in! Just out of interest - what strings do you use on it? I don't think I've found a better sounding set than the Elixirs (which I think were stock on it when I bought it too?)

If I had an Ibanez Fairy Godmother though, I'd probably get a Custom Shop-built model 4 string based on this bad boy -

That would certainly turn a few heads!
