Same experience with the Fullertons.  I tried a 58 P bass, I genuinely thought the more recent Classic MIM 50's were better.  For me, if you want an original but on a budget, you cant beat the 80's MIJ reissues

There has never been a Fullerton 58 P reissue.

I remember when the Fullerton Reissues came out in the early 1980's and some reviews slating them as overpriced and underwhelming in terms of quality and playability. They were especially disappointing considering the relatively cheap but very cheerful JV Squires that were abundant  in the shops at exactly the same time .

There is nothing 'disappointing' about the Fullerton reissues. Some of their features are not historically accurate when compared to the originals but they're great instruments in their own right.

My bad, i meant the 50's gold/burst/maple one, one of my favourtite P bass colour combos.  Assume it was called a 57?

Hi there.

I was wondering about this '64 Jazz Bass. It is for sale and was wondering about authenticity. I know a fair amount about 50's Strats but not 60s Fender basses. However, being a vintage fan I always wanted a 60s JB. It has been refinished but other parts of it don't look right to me (serial no stamp, knobs, pots etc.). I wondered what your thoughts were - if any? Many thanks!

Wow where to begin.

knobs and decal for starters. Fingerboard looks like it’s been in a shark attack

Thanks for the responses! Much appreciated. Yes, it does raise rather a few questions I think. Yeah, the decals are a mile off.

There was a time when they didn’t know the neck varnish attacked decals, and there was a time when the decal sat on top of varnish with no coating, conceivably the damage could be attributable to those causes, however there should also be a fair bit more decal there

Wow - the previous owner must have spent a lot of time soloing around the 20th fret to get that kind of wear!

Maybe the previous owner was a guitarist? You’d need to have it hosed down if so as they can carry mites and ticks, especially if they haven’t been kept in captivity and given vetenary care

It’s okay for the serial to be stamped on the neck plate for some early years. IIRC it was them moved to a decal on the headstock. There are experts on here who could tell you when approximately, like@Hellzero amongst others

equally this may be a bitsa where someone didn’t do their homework

my guess is that it’s a good fake with a few original parts - probably white originally also. Doesn’t mean it’s a bad instrument though

This is just my opinion, There’s quite a lot of breakout on the fretboard probably from a bad refret, I’m on phone picks but they don’t look level either, wrong decal and knobs and 1 intonation screw is shorter , tuners and pickguard look original , the font on the neck stamp looks right to me , will have a better look later at home , I think I’ve seen this jazz up for sale before

Is it vintage? Possibly, but it’s hard to tell.

Neck looks twisted, frets look awful and the condition is atrocious. Personally I’d walk away as fast as I could.

Assume asking £5k +++

I’m in this camp. Looks far too risky to investigate further and there will definitely be others that come along that are less questionable.

It's in an auction mate. Currently 1400. Was wondering whether it was worth a punt really. I think some bits really are 64 :)

L serial is correct for 1964

veneer board also correct

I thought the font for the serial looked a bit strange though. Unlike other 64s I've compared.

Headstock from my L serial number 1964 J. Looks like decal is under the varnish to me. Although looking closer at the photo (bass is a bit harder to look at ATM) there is a chip off the decal, so maybe it's on top of varnish?

That twisted neck puts me off. Would need serious luthier attention.

AFAIK decal on varnish is right for early 60s. Don't know about 64.

I’ve read what people here have written who know far more than me and I agree. Only if it’s cheap … would be my view, and the neck and frets look like trouble brewing
