and of course without question the greatest TV theme tune of all time...
Great thread BTW.

A nice little interview with Barry Gray (only 3:30 minutes long, inc the march), regarding how he came up with the theme.

The amazing Danny Thompson on bass - apparently written and recorded in an afternoon in Gerry Anderson's front room

I used to love the bass on the Dallas theme, before I even knew what bass was.

There were several versions down the years but I believe this to be the funkiest.

Henry Mancini's theme from the old Peter Gunn series,I don't know if it was available in the UK but we watched it here in Canada and every budding guitar and bass player tried to play it.The best version is the one that was used on the show but everyone from the Ventures to Duane Eddy had a run at it.

...and yes,I managed to get some of the notes on my first guitar when I was 14...ooh that was a long time ago...

I remember watching this series when it was first on, I don't think it was ever repeated and I would love to watch it again. From what I can remember most of the incidental music was just double bass. Though I could be wrong.

Anyone with a few hours to spare should check out the KPM 1000 albums. There are dozens of them all written and produced as library music for tv and film. They are all on Spotify and there are some real cool tunes in there if you have time to browse through

Not forgetting that lots of the incidental musical parts throughout an episode were often bass guitar

Being a lover of TV detectives, I have to mention

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtvdtOZyl2I

which has a middle 8 I didn't know about

and the absolutely magnificent http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u20sVtCxf_8

which also has a middle 8 I didn't know about. Incidentally, AIUI, the theme tunes for earliest episodes included the murderer's name in morse code too.

Loads of classics already mentioned. Surely the champion though (granted it's not the theme but still) :

One of my favourites is the music on the closing credits on "Spender" - can't post a link without putting up an entire episode... Think the bass part was played by either Guy Pratt (who worked with Jimmy Nail on "Ain't no Doubt") or Tony McAnaney, who played guitar shop owner Keith Moreland in the show.
