Jazz bass recomendations please.

I'm after a nice 4 string (yes, that's right a 4 string) jazz bass, to inject a 70's type vibe into my playing for my one band.

I like the look of the Fender 70's classic basses, they're nice but a lot of people over on talkbas seem to be swapping things out on them, pickups etc.

I also like the Marcus Miller bass, but I have to admit I'm not 100% on the pickguard.

Laklands also look good, either the Daryll Jones or this one's really caught my eye, this looks very cool.

I like the Fender RI jazzes they look pretty cool.

As do the Fender Victor Bailley basses.

I don't really have a budget as such, at the moment I have about £500, but I don't mind waiting a few weeks, saving up and getting something better.

Suggestions please !.

I think your most likely going to get alot of guys saying to go for the Lakland JO, and I'd say so as well, as it has been said before, Lakland are much better at making jazzes than Fender.

But I'd also put foward Sadowsky Metros as well.

It might be worth looking into the Japanese Fenders, they have some nice re-issue models – much nicer than the Mexican ones in my experience. They can be a little tricky to get ahold of over here though, which may be an issue if you want to try before you buy. I've had guitars from this importer before:

Been very happy with his service, and I believe he keeps a fairly extensive stock in the UK. Might be worth a look...

As usual, I'm going to pitch in and rave about Sandberg. Haven't wanted to touch another bass since I've got hold of it. Plays like a dream, sits brilliantly in the mix, looks the biz, and the range of tones is ace. I'm hooked on the neck pickup in passive mode at the moment, it's lovely and thumpy!

Anything that's left my beloved Stingray redundant must be something special!!

Sadowsky UV70 4, very very nice instrument.. Lakland JO4's are amazing..Also Moon Jazz basses are cool if not a little hard to get hold of...Even though i have a Sadowsky, for the money i would take the Lakland....That jazz in your link is too cool..Both pickups in slap..wow..

Also consider Sandberg, Mike Lull, Fender Jazz24, (i have this bass and it rocks.. seriously!!)
Difficult question time now, probably a silly question too, as sound is personally subjective.

How do the Sadowsky basses sound compared to the Laklands, or the Fender reissue basses, I've been offerred a US reissue 70's bass, and it really does look a beautiful bass, here's a photo of it.
I think Sadowsky's are a more modern take on the Fender sound, and an awsome one at that!!!, and Lakland's are a good clone on the Fender sound..with also tone of there own..

I bet that US reissue sounds bloody nice mind..

Your ears will tell you, so go and play if you can..

I'm just in from band practise where I was playing my Lakland JO4. Awesome bass. Never played the DJ4 but I believe it's more of a 70's vibe than the JO.

I like the UV Sads too , but they couldn't twice as good as what I've already got. Saying that I've never played one... scared to!

That is a nice bass for the money. I'd prefer pearl blocks if it were me. The black looks like somebody's been let loose with a marker... although that's just a personal thing.
I hadn't considered Sadowsky, a quick look on the Gallery website reveals this pretty looking thing.

http://www.thebassgallery.com/sadowskyuv70.html

Very nice !.
I own that bass. In fact I bought it about a year and a half ago, but they never updated the pics...

Sadowskys cut through a mix like no other Jazz. I like my US '78 and Jap 72 reissues, but they haven't had much playtime since I bought the Sado.

You know, seems to me that those buggers over the pond on Talkbass seem to spend more time swapping parts around on their basses and taking 400 photos of them from 200 different angles than they do actually playing them!
The 70's Classic is a seriously nice bass straight out of the box, the pickups are fine.
