This ^ I've not yet commissioned any work from Dave, but what I've seen of his work is incredible! However, Haltwhistle (in western Northumberland) may not be exactly local for you...

SIMS aren't cheap either but you get what you pay for.

I've wondered whether it would be worth taking a bass to a custom car finisher or coachworks. Jon Shuker says they use lacquers for metal that can be prone to cracking if the wood expands and contracts with humidity. But if someone could find the right clear coat it might be worth looking into.

Is that the place that Martin Petersen uses too?

I don`t know if he still does this, but TJC Guitars in Stevenage (so not far from Cambs) did one for me and his work was good, and pricing was also good too.

This man - Terry Chapman - did an old Framus for me last year.
Good guy and excellent job.
The second one he's done for me to date and I may be lining up another.

I believe he uses Sims... and if he doesn't, he only stopped recently..??

Martin told me a number of years ago he used someone who also finished roulette tables. But maybe he's changed supplier since then and uses Sims.

I took my two basses to Sims in the last few years and I couldn't work out why he
was so interested in the piant job...
All he said after looking at them very closely was that 'they weren't done here'
To me the paint jobs are perfectly good but he knew his shop hadn't had them in...but he did at that time do work for Sei
as I needed some work on the neck and he was authorised to replaced the decals...

This!!!

He's done my 75RI Jazz and lacquered the neck on my Stingray. Beautiful jobs, and the guy is as nice as they come :)
