SteveXFR Posted August 17 Posted August 17 (edited) I just got back from Arctangent Festival. Three days of the slightly obscure end of metal and rock. Highlights were: Green Lung - Brilliant performance of old fashioned heavy metal with a bit of humor. Battlesnake - Australian metal with more than a hint of Spinal Tap. God Is An Astronaut - very atmospheric post rock. Emma Ruth Rundle - Solo acoustic, dark and utterly brilliant. Dvne - prog metal, like Mastadon but better. Future headliner. Karnivool - Prog metal, fantastic big production headline show Kylesa - Recently reformed sludge metal legends. Utterly brilliant and relentless. Rolo Tomassi - My favourite performance, legendary mathcore band. Amazing 20th anniversary show. So many others were also amazing. Edited August 17 by SteveXFR 1 Quote
Crusoe Posted August 17 Posted August 17 Stiff Little Fingers last night at their annual homecoming gig. I missed Sham69 unfortunately. PiL were also in support. They were OK, but I was never a big fan. Ali McMordie sounded monster, as always. Near the end, they brought on Rory Gallagher's bassist, Gerry McAvoy, for a cover of Gallagher's "The Devil Made Me Do It", which sounded great. 4 Quote
TrevorR Posted August 19 Posted August 19 Had a surprisingly fun gig at Wembley Stadium last Friday watching K-pop sensations Blackpink. Not my preferred musical style (I was taking the teenager) but have to admit that it was a fantastic show. PS since it’s apparently obligatory to have preferences, my favourites are Lisa and Rosé Quote
Muzz Posted August 20 Posted August 20 Just chatting with my pal Napper and he mentioned he's working the Damnation Festival this year (Doom, Post-Metal, Black Metal, etc). Just had a look at the lineup, and not a single smile in any of the band photos, it's hilarious, they all look like the photographer's just told them the band van has been nicked. Fave band name for the weekend is Crippling Alcoholism...at least they're contemporary in their misery...I'm just waiting for an even more modern one called Switching Broadband Providers... I was asking him about hiring a drum screen for some recording we're doing, because we're getting horrendous mic bleed, and he said 'Horrendous Mic Bleed? I think they're headlining the Friday night...' 1 2 Quote
TrevorR Posted 2 hours ago Posted 2 hours ago Last Friday we went to see Nerina Pallot at The Exchange, Twickenham. For this solo tour she’s playing at smaller (250-500 seater) venues which are in towns less frequented by bands and artists. Given her set up was a piano and an acoustic and an electric guitar, the intimate venue worked well with a capacity 300 folks there. She’s such a good singer songwriter and we’ve been following her for the last 20-plus years. Can’t wait to see her again next year when she’s playing the Royal Albert Hall as a big 25th anniversary celebration gig. 1 Quote
