Bad? I am disappointed that is in the states or I would be bidding!

See, I'm actually ok with the pink! The yellow made me physically wince however...

I'm really not a fan of the Antigua colourway either. At one point there was a matching Antigua bass and strat in the window of my local music shop; I have no idea if they sold, or if they were simply removed and hidden in a dark place...

Yes, I think I heard a story about a couple Antigua's on Denmark St. having to be shifted to the roped 'censored' section at the back of a shop - along with instruments with over-zealous 50s rockabilly decals - after parents complained about the instant trauma that their small children were experiencing.

I had the guitar version of one of these. It was a nice player, though the novelty of that finish wore off rather quickly.
Is that finish faux leather or built in finish cracking?

I also quite like Antigua as a finish. I'm guessing quite a few would have been refinished somewhere along the line to avoid scaring the kids - rather like all those sunburst strats in the early 60s in the UK when the distributors realised everyone wanted to be Hank B Marvin so wanted fiesta red Strats!!

Another finish needing an acquired taste is the original USA Musicman Sub textured finish with checker plate pickguard. Strangely appealing now and if I was to be looking to buy a U.S. sub now I'd insist on it being all original and not pimped up to look like a regular Stingray. I can't work out how to post pictures on this site so I'll leave it to someone else to post a pic (presuming there's anyone left on the site with such a beastie - ah McNach has one I think!)

I had one of these in black. GREAT thumpy tone - 100% stingray, apart from the fact that the pickup is wired in series compared to the full-blown 2EQ version.
Neck every bit a stingray - but the body colours were a touch fugly - especailly the maroon/wine red and greeny ones.

There is a white version - but rare as hen's teeth.

It's a crackle finish in some sort of thin matt paint. The dark bits in between are the body wood with just a thin sealer coat. Also, the pickguard is painted and the neck is stained to approximately the colour of earwax. The AXLs are really good sounding and playable instruments for the money, just the crazy finishes are a bit of an acquired taste.

Oh that yellow one is discusting. The pink one is rather nice, apart from the headstock, which for some bizarre reason they did in black, rather than pink.

Quite tempting..

How about this? One of the T-Birds owned in the 70s by Pete Overend Watts (Mott The Hoople).
That's what you call a craqueleur finish!!
But it is actually that one, or has the colour been stripped off the headstock?

There used to be a Rick finish called Montezuma Brown which I used to refer to as Montezuma's revenge. Or simply Shitburst. Also in the 'dislike of Antigua' camp. One came up on eBay a few years ago that otherwise ticked the boxes of what I was looking for at the time but I just couldn't get over the finish to actually make a bid, it can't decide if its trying to be cream or a bit green with a dash of grey or something else. Call me shallow...

Meddle

I've got that Spear in the " watch " list . Nothing wrong with greenburst, one of the T-40s nearly got that.

Alyctes why not the adorable Dean in Nuclear Green ? I've had to stop myself from getting one many times

But then I've my fair share like this
or this

I don't like the green, but it's not actually god-awful...
(I don't mind the crackly Washburn or the mauve perspex job, though the pointy headstocks don't help...)

Does this qualify for this thread? Sort of a snot-burst with a fire-glo pick guard... What were Fender thinking in 1969?
Oh. Ooh. Ewww.
:hurls:

Yes, I'd say so.

(Ugly as sin, as well.)

Now its a mighty long way down the dusty trail
And the sun burns hot on the cold steel rails

Not sure I'm down for a greenburst Spear Flextool...

I reviewed one a few years back.

That looks like a three colour sunburst where the red has faded away - it's not as it left the factory.

I appreciate people doing something a bit different, and I like a lot of Jens Ritter's instruments. However, don't think either the above instrument's finish, or the following instrument's finish, does it for me.

I'm also not sure about this blue fretboard look, but I could imagine more people liking this than the above two. Not that I would want to discourage anyone from trying anything different, I'm sure that there are people who would love any one of these.
