So: we've scored a record deal, and we've been invited to a studio to record for a week.
I will only be going for 3 days as I'm struggling to get the time off work, and have a heavily pregnant wife I'm worried about being apart from. We'll be staying in a hotel close to the studio, so I'm treating it as a bit of a mini-break from life. I'm not sure how much time we'll get in the evenings, but I can't see us going too mental.

I started to write myself a packing list (I'm a bit OCD like that) and was just wondering if anyone had any experience where they've thought "I wished I packed...." Or "I can't believe I lugged around .... that we never needed" that they care to share, I know there's a lot of experienced old hands on here. Was thinking of some fruit snack bars, but am generally planning on getting food locally.

Oh and for the glaring omission of an amp, I'll be going straight into the tape recorder (or whatever they use now) using an amp simulator.

Ear plugs if you've got 'em - sitting there listening to it blaring out the studio monitors for a long time takes its toll... !

A spare bass, if you have one, or at least a toolkit - the input on mine started playing up when I went to a studio, managed to get away with it but could have done with a backup.

Straighteners? Really?
Lol, straightners picked up before make up?! :P

A good book. Always a lot of sitting around in that sort of situation. Probably worth a thread of its own as to which book...
I was thinking books / mags, but didn't know how anti-social that is! :P might have to bring something lighthearted & inspirational :) Cheers!

What's a leatherman ?
Band uniform ?
Oh a Leatherman is like a multi-tool.
Yeah we have a band uniform (Red and black stripes, ala Dennis The Menace - http://static.wixstatic.com/media/10121c_ba7a8a2e718857cf09d17f118ef0e8ff.jpg_512)

Cheers everyone, keep the suggestions coming!

Joking aside - have you thought about what happens if the baby turns up and you need to go? Have you got a contingency for the bass parts - can you guitarist cover it, or can you go in and bash the bass tracks out in one go, once the rest of the tracking has been done?

Not to pour rain on your parade, but people without kids don't understand that you need to do the family stuff first, and if the band doesn't progress after the recording, you don't want anyone using your inability to do the recording 'properly' becoming the default scapegoat. Might be an idea to try and agree you will do all your parts first, then if you need to go, no problem. Well worth spending some time boxing it off.

Finally, forget to mention that peppermint tea or earl grey is a good option rather than endless coffees, and, even though it's summer, some gloves to wear to keep your hand muscles 'warm' : bad cramp or a muscle twinge will really spoil your day.

Have fun.

Yeah, lots of plans for if I get that call!
I'm actually only 1Hr 20 from the hosp, so not that far from home really.
I'm also putting £200 in an envelope for an emergency taxi in case I've had a drink!
That said we'll have 5 cars between us, and the keyboard player is tee total! So fingers crossed the baby wont come on those 2.5 days!
I will be the first in the band to have a kid, so yeah has been hard trying to keep August free of gigs!

But in terms of bass, our band has a 'substitute' who can cover bass, drums, or guitar. Eek tho!

Stuff is mostly personal choice - seems to be pretty well covered above (although the range and quantity of cosmetics is definitely not something I'd thought of... ).

+1 on something to pass the time (of which you will will have lots - lots and lots and lots). Make sure you get proper sleep too - adrenaline and coffee will only go so far. Finding some time to walk out into the real world occasionally wouldn't hurt either.

Is it just recording by the way or are you going to come out of the session with a finished product?

Herbal teas are really good at keeping you refreshed, alert and generally in a good mood. Too much coffee makes your guts bad and makes your brain go wonky. Same goes for energy drinks!

Also take a couple of proper physical books to read. It's easier on the eyes than reading off a screen for hours.

Have fun!

I hadn't even considered that. Excellent advice!

I'll just be involved with the recording (Days 1-3) I'm entrusting the band to approve the production / mastering on days 4 & 5.
I'll hopefully get emailed some Mp3s on the last day. Yeah the deal involves some physical products at the end, but I’m assuming they’ll take a while to produce (They will be coloured 12” vinyls, as well as CDs)

Leave the alcohol til after the sessions are finished. I once read that a well known producer (I've forgotten who) used to have a sign on the studio wall that read "Boring people make boring records, and there is nothing more boring than someone who's drunk" And as someone who used to run a small demo studio, there is nothing worse than watching people waste time and money sitting around drinking when they should be working! Well, except bands who clearly haven't worked on the songs enough, arrangements etc (which I'm sure you have)
