Fender P ?

Recommended Posts

I spotted it as soon as it was listed, I put it on my watch list not expecting any bids above £50, but it's already had seven bids and is now on £250 with another five days to go.

I checked the serial number on the "Avery" labels attached to the bass, and this is the finding:

Your guitar was made at the Fuji-gen Plant (for Fender Japan), Japan in the Year(s): 1985 - 1986

I don't think so!

Definitely not a Fender!
I'm no expert, but the logo is wrong, the neck / headstock looks wrong
and the neck plate is definitely wrong
I've seen a few Japan Fenders - none with a plate like that!

I can't believe there have been 11 bids already :o
I hope the winning bidder realises before paying

I thought that you might be able to nail it Jon. :)

Surely anyone paying £330+ will have the savvy to know it isn't a Fender... or is a Melody worth £330+

It's actually a nice, fairly unusual copy, probably worth about £150ish, with its proper headstock logo - although in fairness I have seen unbranded ones. Quite hard to tell from some70s MIJ copies, but these tuners, 3-piece neck, wheel-type truss adjuster & Gibson-type nut all turn up on the Italian-made ones.

The seller doesn't necessarily know it's a fake (that's not an Ebay-era decal, after all!) but it is surprising that punters still fall for it.

Has anyone reported it?
It may stop some poor sod from being ripped off :(
Yes, a pal of mine says he reported it - nothing has happened though....

Quote from seller info;
"it as a serial number on the head stock and rear plate A969165 ."

No - it has a STICKER on, with a serial number on it!
A rough, home-made looking sticker at that!

Really hope someone isn't taken for a ride with this
If it's still there later today, I'll report it too
And I'd urge everyone else who has seen this thread to do so....
... Lets look out for one another, and stop these scammers....
Please, everyone report this......

Personally I would let them buy it, they might know what they are doing, it is a vintage Italian copy bass from a bygone era, someone might be looking to restore it.
If a Limelight with fake Logo is acceptable then whats the difference.
I am quite sure even the most stupid buyer knows its not a Fender, but given what other copies sell for who are we to estimate its value.

How much is a 40 YR old + copy worth to a collector of such things, just look at some of the other daft prices paid for similar stuff.

Italian copies like this are a lot rarer than MIJ but (currently) a lot less collectable - a surprising amount of them get punted as MIJ, either because sellers don't know what they've got, or they appreciate there's more money in MIJ. That said, I have a pre '75 Ibanez P copy, I doubt I'd get £300+ for it.

I still think it's a dumb buyer issue, as far as this one's concerned.

For the half-dozen or so that might be interested, a Melody 5000 P copy, different tuners & body wood (or possibly stain), but otherwise the same as this one - neck build, truss adjuster, neckplate, and that odd offset scratchplate screw. Same slabby body & not-quite fitting scratchplate too:

I have seen some very odd stuff sell for odd prices.
Squire JV basses fetch more than the actual Fender JV they were based on ??
Old instruments that were wardrobe door stops selling daft money because they are old.

I am sure people must collect junk like this and are willing to pay for it.

The difference is quite obvious....
Limelights are custom made, and though they have a Fender logo,
the builder is NOT trying to pass them off as a Fender!
In fact, Limelights in particular are rather higher quality that most basses priced much higher

A "let some mug buy this" attitude is just immoral
If you saw any other crime, you'd report it, wouldn't you?
I mean, what if someone was trying to sell you a "cut & shut" car?
If a passing mechanic saw you showing interest, you'd want him to warn you....

Yes, many of us might be able to spot this fake, being passed off as something it isn't
But this might be someone who isn't sure, or is taken in by the sellers' blurb....

Let them know - it's what you'd expect - someone to help & inform you.....

This bass IS being passed off as a Fender

Then they are a counterfeit product, you can have one or the other, not both.
