Mr Stinky Posted March 22, 2014 Share Posted March 22, 2014 (edited) My guitarist buddy has just made me into a Tom Petty fan. OMG what have i missed all these years!! I've just learnt Running Down A Dream. Although its a easy piece, it's just a great little riff. A real feel-good sound. I'm interested in other pieces that do the same. It should ideally be some thing that lets you look around as well. Perhaps have a wander about, doing it just for the joy of playing live. Then he seemed to enter a prolonged wobbly patch - collaborations with Dave Stewart and Jeff Lynne, The Wilbury's, acting. And - tbh - Mojo was not quite the 'stunning return to form' some held it to be. Typical of the musical economy of the band. Petty stuff is perfect for cover bands - it is generally easy to play but sounds great. Most people know a lot more Petty material than they think they do too! The Classic Albums episode on Damn the Torpedoes is a great watch too... [/quote] I think that is absolutely right. I certainly would never have put myself down as a fan but, when chasing YouTube links one afternoon, surprised myself as to how many I knew and enjoyed. Once you start getting into all the duets/collaborations, the guy is everywhere! Didn't spot anyone mentioning The Traveling Wilburys either which I thought was OK at the time but rediscovering them about 15yrs back I realised I'd been a bit harsh first time around - brilliant stuff. Diablo Posted March 24, 2014 Share Posted March 24, 2014 Speaking of the Wilburys, I'm just a bit too young to remember them much other than the episode of Dukes of Hazzard when Roy Orbison played the Boars Nest! But my parents went to see Roy Orbison play live. He was the only act on the bill. Walked onto stage, played solid for 3 1/2 hours, said thanks to the crowd and walked off again. A great voice and player though, he just didn't have that outgoing frontman personality, perhaps a good thing sometimes. Sometimes the music is the show, rather than supplementing the egos on stage.
