Do it myself Gramma pad

I have had me a looksee at those supposed wonder planks, the Auralex gramma pad. They seem so simple to make i am going to have to have a go.

So. It's just a bit of chipboard/MDF with a bit of old carpet on top, and two runners on the bottom which are padded with thick foam (like the tough stuff you get to kneel on not the kind they used to stuff armchairs with)

So is that it ? Because if it is, I can knock one up in 30 minutes tomorrow morning and let you know how it goes.?

If it works I will be namimg them the Dazzlex gramma pads and flogging them for half of what Aurelex sell them for. :)

I'm a natural sceptic like yourself Daz. I hung back getting one until I saw one going second-hand and then I jumped in and bought it.
It does genuinely make a difference. Even the drummer commented :)
I'd like to know if a home-made one is just as good, so keep us informed please!
I know that I'm such a slow bodger at making things that I would really gain much by a DIY approach.

I was actually thinking the same not too long back and I'm not exactly what you would call "handy"

I use a couple of pieces of that zigzaggy foam, zigzag sides together, under my cab where necessary. It's only about 2 inches thick (less when compressed) so it's very stable, and it works perfectly. Plus it's easier to bung in a bag/ under your arm to carry, etc.

Edit: this is the stuff: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Acoustic-Treatment-Wedge-Studio-Tiles/dp/B000RW7U9U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1321379626&sr=8-1

33 quid for 24, I got mine from the drummer's stash for nish. Recommended.

I thought the Grammas used Neoprene which explains the price?

It's this stuff:

Annoyingly it doesn't say how long a strip you get so you may need to buy two or more

There was a similar thread a couple of years ago - http://basschat.co.uk/topic/61275-diy-auralex-gramma-pad-a-like/page__view__findpost__p__605737 I made one and it worked a treat.

They're 4 foot long by 4x2 inch. I bought a strip of Platfoam last week & cut it in 1/2 & put it straight under my cab. Did the job.

I was gonna glue it to a bit of chipboard that I have & carpet it, but it was easier to carry the 2 strips in a bag with all the cables.
I'm gonna complete the project later (maybe tomorrow).

Would these do as good a job as a gramma pad?

I`ve got a Gramma - the normal sized one - I know there is a larger one for bigger rigs- I have had two schroeder cabs and a LM 11 on this- very stable. To be honest for £50 ish inc delivery I do not think there is much point in making your own. When you add together the material needed, transportation to get it- putting this together and more importantly the time to do it- and it may not work as well as the product- cant see why someone wouldnt just buy one.

For boomy stages it is a bit of a god send and definately worth it.

The Platfoam ended up costing £17 odd with postage. I know the Grama pad also has some V foam under it too (you could pop some eggbox between the strips of foam).
If you take this into account & the cost of some board, carpet, glue & staples (for the carpet), then the Grama pad is better value. However, if like me you have all but the foam to hand, then it's a no brainer.
I might make mine a fold up one so it fits in my bag.

I made this one from Platfoam.

If the material you use to seperate the cab from the floor is too thin/hard, it will still transfer sound.
If the foam is too soft there's a chance your cab and amp will easily be knocked over!!

This works a treat and was covered in another Gramma thread.

Won't go anywhere without it now!

Cheers. :)

I was in B&Q this morning looking at this pipe insulation. This is about 3" diameter.
I was wondering if cutting a load of 2" doughnuts and sticking them to a piece of MDF would work
