1. Cus yours is a 4x10 In this case, one good thing you can do to help that will give best results is get the bass cab off the stage floor ! Good big lockable wheels help as they add an air gap. i do pa hire, and the same prob happens alot, and the best thing is a stand. easy for combos, 2x10, and 4x10 (not so easy with 6 and 8x10) . it has to be a stand, not a box of some sort like the drummers plastic bass drum case, it will still be there just not as bad and add boom. I always for the last 25 years use a stand, used it with my old set up, a trace 4x10 and trace 350, and now with a swr redhead 2x10 some times with a swr 2x10 ext cab, so i can have the redhead on a stand and the 2 x 10 on the floor under it, and if i get boom unplug it or put it on the stand, done. This also helps do two things, 1, because the cab is high, about back height, you can hear what you are playing much much clearer and.... you dont have to have it as loud on stage, win win. 2, if you set up next to the drummer and he uses a monitor you can put his monitor under the stand saving stage space, for functions you can wrap black cloth around hiding the stand and the bass drum monitor just leaving your cab in the air, looks very tidy, win win. so recap... win win + win win= win win win win folds up, and you can use it for all sorts, if you dont use it your guitarist will, if he does not clame it the key player will, and if he does not the sound guy will for the desk, so is just dam handy to have. just had a quick look, these are very strong, height and width adjustable. (look for "keyboard table") look for a strong square tube leg rather than a round tube leg worth a go, Hope it helps, something like this.... 2. yep, had a few amps over the years with valves in, At mo im using swr gear which has 12ax7, a red head in the studio another red head for small gigs and an sm500 for bigger gigs. I got some "MESSA" valves from ebay the ones in the black and white boxes....run a mile, they are awfull, the only time my redhead broke at a gig was when i put one of these in that day to try, mid song just a very loud distorted buzzing, nearly took the speakers of the amp and pa out, lucky i had the one i had taken out in my spares box. i also put one in the red head in the studio but took it out right away and binned them. found the best one for my amp was the original one that was in it, and have an old mullard that sounds good for live with a good strong kick ass o/p, but found it just slightly buzzy for studio, i think alot of copys are on ebay so now i always order from source. As Colin says "Watford valves" are great guys who know their stuff, and fantastic backup. they do all the "stars" amps and can tell you who is using what and more importantly... why. cant go wrong there You buy cheap, you buy twice... in this case... maybe alot more.
 3.
With you all the way there. As the bass player in a seven piece Funk Band - apart from our keys player who must be some kind of octopus...! the bass player has a sh*t load of stuff to learn for a set. But you have to learn it so you can then start to FEEL it and lock with the drummer. You can't do that if you're reading the dots or tabs. Yeah a good horn player makes it come alive and I know they need the dots to work well together, but learning it is the only way.
Cool, send me PM with a link to your band, and al put a link on our site, trying to communitise funk bands ... ("communitise" ? i dont think thats a word..... sounds good tho, am usin it) We have an idea to do a "funkfest" soon, so its good to get contacts. but yea, dotts for practice, but on stage i want to see movement ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qb-YiYyo9tw

 6. Hi Greek, not seen that before, cheers but here is abit of a gem,...... i get great ideas from a funk radio station in the usa called "wefunk" hosted by guys who really ( REALLY) know their stuff. every show is archived so you can back over them and catch some awsome artists you will have not heard of before, a real eye opener to some of the unheared of talent ( over here) that is still keeping the funk alive, also have some great intresting inside info we can learn from, For eg, if you check out the stevie wonder 867 show there is a conversation about "fulfillingness first finale " interesting. now im a huge stevie wonder fan and i have never caught stevie calling out the jackson five before the "do wapp" chants but he does and it was the jackson five doing them vocals, cool, check it out, so it has great info as well. so back to your point, yea i get some great ideas listening to that show. enjoy... http://www.wefunkradio.com/show/867#play_aa

 10. Been reading this with intrest, looks like you have all been down the try and test road, while I have not tried most of what you have suggested I have tried a number of jazz pick ups and still have them all. I have a number of jazz basses which all have there own sound, so have tried swapping and changing in them all, what I found was that a pickup that sounds great in one bass sounds pants in another, so I'm taking it that the pick up can only reproduce what the bass is giving it, you know when your in a shop and you try a few jazz basses without plugging them in, one might feel dead and one might feel snappy and alive, that with your own playing tec will as you know have an effect on what the pickup will reproduce, So it's a suck it and see thing you might have to try a few to get what your after, What I ended up with is this, the best jazz I have is a jap fotoflame 62 reissue When I got it I thought the pups were weak (Which were not its original pickups) , tried about 5 pairs, nothing over £50, the best one I found for the rear was one from a highway one I had, which sounded far better than in the highway one, (no matter what I put in the highway one it never sounded any good) in the fotoflame it's alive and sort of gritty biting sound. the neck pick up I have not a clue what it is, but matched with bridge one it adds warmth to the sound, and mellow when soloed, I use this bass a lot now it does what I want it to do, but would like to try some of the top end ones y'all have mentioned just to see, interesting,
 11. i have had this in the past, very annoying, about a 2 years ago i sold my wal 6 string to a guy who said he has always wanted one, dream bass, never get rid, loves it bla bla...... and the big one , " if ever i sell it i will contact you first" so, seems a nice bloke. 3 weeks later or so, i spotted it on ebay and he sold it for nearly 600 more then he paid for it, The Ba$!@£D SO.. now if i sell anything, i sell it for what its worth, market value, no money knocked off, no mates rates, nothing extra, that way everyone is happy
 12.
Nothing but a noisy Shed Builder.
, my chuckle muscle wont stop dancing al tell dennis you said that,,,, expect footsteps and loud knocking oh... and you will know its him cus the footsteps will be in time and the knocking will be tighter than a gnats chuff. sounds like a great gig, would deffo go if i was closer. so we will be expecting a photo of you with vic then ? do it
 13. funny how you find things, i came to know VW playing from bela fleck, not because i was i was looking for bass but because i was into banjo, and bela for me was god, i have i think everything he has recorded, the guy really is pushing boundaries, he is to me on banjo what luc ponty is on violin. So inspired by him and as a crap banjo player i did a few of my own in that style, ( not half as good tho ) so while im listening to early bela, vw playing was seeping through, im not really into singers, lyrics i just think is poetry added to music, not really needed and can sometimes just get in the way, or take up the melody of a now redundant instrument that would have done it, so bela for me was perfect, no lyrics just great playing and great underpinning by all the band. sorry, im getting there,,, i wont be long so vw playing on all them early recordings with bela was lock tight underpinning, with great taste, and had the skills to let go with something clever that would catch your ear when freedom was passed his way, him and bela just bounced off each other.... perfect breading for boundry breaking talent. I think his use of melody comes from bela. i can see if you just jump into vw solo cds you mght think WTF, but take time to catch early bela and to me it all seems to make so much more sence. if that all makes sence. JMO. but he is a great user of melody, anyones will do if it fits, good on him. for eg. is that jaco's continuum you can hear at 4:37 of this ( link below) well at least he is not afraid to use it. but again dont just skip to 4:37, listen to it in its entirety and then it makes sence, a nice ending to the solo he was just doing,( not a great solo tbf abit out in places,, but you can still hear what was on his mind) Yea.... i like vw playing. by the way casey Driessen's playing on this is just fantastic.as is jeff coffins sax playing, nice feel, ( but seems there is a pont where he wanted bela to go into another gear and looked at him about 6:50 to do so, and bela just looked bored, and stayed there, shame, caseys playing deserved that, common bela, lets hear them gears ! !) 17.
Are you talking about a Stingray too? I'm not a big fan of their battery compartment. Yes, it's fast and easy access... but I see how it can misbehave. Mine did ages ago (it's a 2002, so it's old but not THAT old) but all I had to do was clean the contacts a bit (abrassive) and bend them upwards so that they pressed more against the battery... and so far so good... but I do think sometimes about replacing it with a snap and a simple lid.
Sorry yes the stingray, i think when they designed that bit, the bloke at the back who use to work for K-Tel, jml or Ronco said " iv got an idea". Some like it some dont, i just think it trouble waiting to happen, Just my thoughts on it,

 20. Same here also, only it was not just the battery dying, the copper contacts at the bottom of the "toys r us" plastic battery case had corroded and the power wires to the main board, so i got a new one, and on that one the clasp cracked and snapped off so having had enough i ripped that out and got an old chrome cover and a battery snap, was fine from then on, i still have them somewhere.
