Analog recording. im Just wondering if anyone still uses tape to record ? im still using tascam 16 and 24 track reel to reels and while i love the sound of my mackie hdr24 digi recorder, i still love recording on to tape. i find if i get an idea and want it down fast its to the tape i go first... 1 button on, plug in the bass and drum machine. press record and i am all ready to go, its that quick, for me to do the same on the digi the whole set up seems to take ages, once i have all the ideas and parts down i then take the idea to the digi. so while im on this has anyone sync'd two recorders together or sync'd a reel to reel to the daw so as to use the daw to control the reel to reel ? i know how to do this the other way, to control the daw from the reel to reel using a smpte striped track. but i want to control it the other way, so now im up to the stage of looking for a tascam midiizer mts1000, and so to my question ...has anyone found another way to do this ?

I have been reading this with intrest, sometimes when reading a thread you have to stop yourself from commenting... but this makes me boil enough to comment... Here are my thoughts NEVER PAY TO PLAY... its devaluing live music, and music as a whole All pay to play venues should be boycotted, i think they are taking the pi@@ out of us, and at the end of the night pat you on the back tell you to come back anytime ( but bring more people !) and cant wait to kick you out the door to see what thay have made, i know brewery owned pubs that support live music have a budget set aside for live music TO PAY THE BAND.. they dont even pay for advertising and want you to do that as well. So on a good sat night who gets paid ?? Bar staff .............paid glass collectors...paid manager...........paid doorman...........paid dj.....................paid people selling the beer to the pub... paid music licence...................... paid cleaners............................. paid But musicians who bring in the cash to pay for all this ?? Sod all cus you should be lucky we are letting you play, If you have a good following and can sell tickets you dont need them, you can reclame costs and self promote your band, club together and hire the local town hall or local venue, if you have faith in your band its worth a shot at least once, As all musicians know for an original band product is king, but while trying to get your songs out there if you are a pro musician ( or thinking of becoming one) playing live is an important part of your income i think we should Spread the word, "never pay to play"

Gray area indeed i do PA hire and hire out a ful Hk rig, 32chan desk with rack gizmos, 5 way powered monitoring, all quality mics, stands,multicore, lights, all set up before the band arrive, and when they bugger off as soon as they finish, im left til the dj has packed away and last out. now i also play in a band that expect the same pa and standards, All i ask for the band i am in, is that the pa takes a members cut, so a 5 piece band splits 6 ways, great for the guys they turn up plug and play finish and go. but then there is a sound man who turns up when i arrive does the sound and lights and leaves when i do , so he gets a cut so 7 ways. Now reality, If you did £ per hour and you do PA as well as play in the band, ! ! sh*t you could go and sell broken biscuits on a market stall for more, but thats playing in a band, just enjoy, you sign up, expect the worst, any extra is a good day.

fretless, as much as i love certain makes of bass, with a fretless i would just buy anything that sang in my hands, ( dont be biased toward a make.) big failings for me, or my first check, is the G string, make sure this is loud with nice swells so many fretless basses die badly round the C to D notes on the G string, some go into a more of a harmonic than a solid note also in this area, not so noticable on a fretted as the steel in the fret helps with sustain, but much more noticable on a fretless having the softer note made of wood and skin. i have a fair few fretless basses and the one i use for recording (if ever) is the cheapest of the lot !! worth checking

seems the norm for them, i have had 2 problems also. 1 i had a roland rack mixer collected by the winning bidder with them. and it was packed very well with polystyrene all round. when he got it they had managed to bend the plate on the front with the controls and bend 2 corners to almost 90 deg, which means they would of had to throw it at least twice ! 2 i had a new cast iron chimninea delivered by them and because of the first incident i asked to look at it before i signed,Driver said " he has no time he is on a tight schedule" ! ! and was arsey. i did look and sure enough it was cracked, he said "if i sign for it he will get it picked up" i said no just take it back now, if i had signed for it i would of been stuck with it, anway was refunded by the seller. the moral is always pay for things to be signed for and if receiving CHECK before you sign. if damaged do not let them leave without it. On saying all this i have had damaged good from other couriers as well, so its all a bit of a chance. i still maintain if buying a bass in the uk or something fragile over say £500 i always go and collect it.

BUGGER, Im in the northwest, trying to make a living doing just music here is hard, on saying that, if i had my life again i would do it all again ( and still do!) the memories and the buzz as you know is something cash cannot pay for. But if you are a young player wondering how to try and make it work, loads of great advice above. and my bit of good advice to add to them is...[u] [b]product is king[/b][/u]. if you play in say a cover band its great while you are out playing and getting paid, but for the long term[b],[/b] learn to write songs as soon as you can, and find ways of getting them heard.

If You want reality, ask your self this..... How many people personally do i know that have bought their house from just playing music ??? I have been playing for 30 odd years and pro for 15 of them..... and i personally know 2 !! And to put that into reality ...one of them is a busker who has and still does busks all over the world
