1. It recalls to mind Simon's Chris Squire, electra tribute, for some reason.
2. same thing happened to me, I put a temporary fix in with all i could find, which was a piece of red silk ribbon. A year later it is still there. I now realise that silk is of course extremely strong.
3. I love the way the camera person suddenly realizes that they have been filming in black & white 32 minutes in and tries to cover the flick of the switch to colour, with a lens effect, to pretend it was all done on purpose
4. I have 30 un scratched lottery cards if you wanna take a chance I also have about the same number of unchecked saturday/wednesday lotto cards, to check, so if i win on those i promise i will buy it
5. This looks nice. Annoyingly though. Although he states it is lighter than a J or P bass (im assuming he means Fender) he does not state the actual weight.
6.
This has been round the EBay block fairly recently - I was watching it then. Can't remember what it went for.
Possibly one of those high spec bitsa's that actually sounds like a table leg strung with welding wire.?
7. When I was a kid I often heard adults say something similar to
an electric guitar is so easy to play that anyone can do it without lessons. Because its electric you just strum it and noises come out, and it all sounds great.
I think someone must have seen Jimi Hendrix on the Lulu show and got this mastermind theory from there, maybe ? ? My mate actually bought a Woolies special, on the back of this sage advice. After getting home and plugging it into his old Stereogram, via something like a, jack plug/Din 7 pin cable, he twanged away on it, as did I. To say we were disapointed not to be sounding like Slade might have been overstating the case. But we certainly learned a hard lesson that day. He more than me, as he had paid out his combined savings and birthday money, to the ammount of £20 !. Which as anyone who was 11 years old in 1974 will tell you. Was a bloody fortune. (mind you he was always getting more money than me. and we were alkways going straight to Woolies to spend it. Over the year swe went up town on a Saturday to buy loads of Winfield specials. Items such as, a small reel to reel tape recorder, and an air pistol, which I had to go in and buy myself, dressed in my best platform shoes, swishers and borrowed Jacket, as you had to be 17. I was only 13 at the time, so the shop assistant must have been blind or from Texas ? .) (mind you It was a great and constant annoyance to me, and amusement to my school mates already on the bus, that from the age of around 12 that I could often only get on buses for (under 16) half fare if i was in school uniform, so I must have looked older than I was)
8.
Foot drum, though, is surely wrong in any context
Yeah, 'Foot Drum' is just plain ugly to even say out loud, I agree.
9. I remember seeing them in the Spring of 1979, just before they broke into the charts with 'Gangsters'. The club I saw them in had a 'punk nite' on Mondays and The Specials brought a contingent of 'Mods' with them. Some of them locals, and our hated Mod rivals, who had no idea who the band were, who only went along because they dimly knew The Specials to be somehow related to their Mod scene. But most amusingly to our little mob, didn't associate them with the Gangsters single till it was played in the set. I remember a pal of mine named Dross crawling around underneath tables and setting the fishtails of parkas on fire. Oh what fun Ah well, we were only 16 or 17. As i recall though they did play a damn fine set. The only thing was, in the morning they went back to the club, to load up their gear, and with only the cleaners there, they stole the entire clubs PA. Thereby halting with immediate efect and forever all the monday night gigs at the club (Smartryz, in Love Street, Chester) So although it was a good gig ,I have always hated them for ruining our little Monday night scene where we could actually see some big name punk and new wave bands without travelling to Erics in Liverpool.
10. Who should I contact, Hartke or Guitar Amp Keyboard, ?
11. Something is not well in the land of my Hartke LH500. I have it connected to the speakers of my Behringer BX4210A - 450 watt combo, that I had taken the amp out of. All worked fine for 7 weeks, (The Hartke was bought from G.A.K. eight weeks ago) then last week I heard a few crackles or quick cut outs. Then it seemed to revert to normal. I assumed it was the speakers on the Behringer, and thought no more of it. Last night i go to plug in and no sound! The Hartke power switch lit up, and i heard the valves 'click' on approx 15 seconds after I switched on (as per normal) But no sound woud come from the speakers. I tried different leads, I tried, the acxtive socket instead of the passive. nothing. The only time that I got any sound at all though the speakers was when I pushed the Limiter button in and out, there was a click though the speakers. I stil assumed it was the Behringer speakers. But having sold all my practice amps and having pulled appart my two old cabs which were taking room in the garage and keeping only the speakers, I had nothing to try it with. So i put the old Behringer amp back in the combo, i plugged in and all was fine, my heart sank as I realised it was probably the LH500 amp iteslf! Has anyone had any similar experiences? I cant recall anyone else even having a Hartke break down. That was one of the reasons for my purchase. Any advice from anyone ?
12.
"I've hired some pyrotechnics" - percussion player in former band. Yep, it's a great idea to hire pyrotechnics for a venue with a low ceiling. BANG... FLASH.... KERBOOM..... Are the audience enjoying the sight of a band obscured by smoke from the knees up as much as I'm enjoying lungfulls of the said smoke? I can laugh now... then all I could do was turn my lungs out.
If I could go tangential for a single post...... I was trying to recall to mind what this post above, reminded me of. Now i have remembered. A mid 1960's band from the Midlands called The Move, (later to morph into E.L.O.) consisted of Bev Bevan (drummer) Roy Wood (guitar) Trevor Burton (rythym guitar) Carl Wayne (vocals ) Ace Kefford (Bass). They used to end their set with a track called "i can hear the grass grow" it was an instrumental coda to the original song. One by one the players would leave the stage and lean their guitars on the amps giving huge feedback, till all that was left was Bev Bevan pounding out a stentorian drum solo. So as the track closed, Bevan leant down behind his kit and lit a huge firecracker, unseen to the audience. He then went off himself behind the now almost totally dark stage (instuments still feeding back ) Then all of a sudden an enourmous BANG with smoke filling the place. The main amp plug was pulled at the same time, leaving silence. Those in the know say it was the most amazing end to a set ever seen. Still talked of by those who saw it and apparently, as a set closer, never equalled. Why dont someone try it, its probably been forgotten know, (except by the oldies who were there themselves) . The Move (circa 1966)
13.
Bit of a strange one maybe; when I click on 'view new content' very often I get Members instead. I definitely get it every time I come from the message page. I know the Members buton is above the 'view new content' & I certainly click within the correct box. Happens on both my PC & laptop the same. Don't think I've seen this mentioned before, apologies if it's already known about. 15.
Again, less contemporary, but here goes.. Glen Matlock. Look at his playing on the show 'So it Goes', very dexterous and strong. Who said punks couldn't play? Testicles, I say. And no matter what folk say, he turned up to play on 'Never Mind the Bollocks', just the album that stopped everything, and started it again.
Glen Matlock only played on two Never mind the bollocks tracks. Steve Jones played the others (in a power chord root and fifth fashion, as per his guitar work) when it became clear that Glen was not going to turn up, despite being paid up front by Malcom Maclaren. It was Glen's two fingers to the people who never stood by him. He spent those two days in various pubs staying out of the way so he couldnt be found. He admits all this himself in his autobiography. For several years the rumour was that he had turned up and played on the album, because everyone knew Sid didnt do it. Even Johnny Rotton thought this had happened, as he was only there to put his vocals on top, he just assumed that Glen had turned up, and slagged him off for it. But it was just a dumb rumour the same as the one that stated that Chris Spedding played on NMTB as well as behind a screen when on tour playing live!! The truth of who played on the album is also confirmed on The Classic albums DVD for Never Mind the B0llocks, where the band and the producer Bill Price talk us through the album track by track. The spünk bootleg has a few more of Glen Matlock's tracks with some early Denmark street recordings on it and a live track from 1976. Glen's work can still be heard on a load of early bootlegs though most are rough.
16.
OK Ok.. I think the drummer thing is getting a bit outta hand.. I think the issues you speak with drummers is like any other musician is if they don't know their instrument and more importantly how it relates to music or even understand music. It really annoys my when people think that a drummer only knows about time and 'beats'. If the drummer is a musician he/she will have an understanding of pitch, notes, chords and arrangements to some degree as well as time. I'm actually a drummer, bassist and guitarist (ish) and I think drummers fall in the same hole when they don't learn the basics of music which actually includes pitch and the relation to other music. When I taught drums, I'd always encouraged my students to play pitched instruments as it turns them into a musician rather than a drummer. I also relate things to pitch and melody as well as time in lessons. I think as bassist we gotta think how many times people say 'playing bass is easy, there's only 4 strings' and 'just play the root notes and shut up, you don't even play chords'. Rant over.. I know most of this is a joke, but maybe the drummer side of me is getting sensitive
Yeah well the thing is.. most drummers are not musicians who play pitched instruments and read music are they ??
17.
Pah! I can top that. 2nd September, playing the George IV in Chiswick, at the end of the first set a punter (who had been watching me pretty carefully) came over and pointed at my Alleva Coppolo KBP5. "Hey mate, is that a Peavey?"
You should keep a Peavey on a stand to pan people on the bonce with if they ask such questions. Can they not read the headstock ?! ps: Im hoping theres going to be one of the Alleva Copolo KBP4 at bass day.
yes, with a spade ps: Am i the only one here who has no idea what 'summer of 69' or '500 miles' are ? and is this a good thing?
19. cheap cracks ??
20. It possibly depends how out of tune they are with each other. If they were all tuned to an out of tune piano or organ, it might be perfectly fine. On the other hand i may have no idea what im talking about.
21. You should have bought it. they go for up to £1100
22. Black betty is a huge choon. Best of luck with the audition.
23. Always remember how lucky you are to live in London. Able to go out to a large assortment of gigs of any genre any night of the week. When i was a stripling of 17 (in 1980) I went there for three days and went out every night. Over Friday, Saturday, Sunday, I saw : The Ramones, The Boys, Ten Pole Tudor, The Slits, The Raincoats, The Pop group, The Damned, The Cramps. A seminal weekend for me. I never forgot it, It just made me realise how starved of music and culturte we are where i live, and away from London in general.
24.
Does this have a tube preamp? Can it do a nice grindy rock tone, or is it more of a clean machine?
yes it has a selectable tube or solid state pre amps. Great rig for not much money. free bump
25. Re: the new price, They used to be £530 new but then Grand Reward (who make them under the Farida name, and make guitars for some of the worlds top names including Fender/Squier whom they make the Classic vibe series for) decided it was going to concentrate on their top line accoustic 6 strings as they bring in more revenue. Thats why the price was dropped. I almost sold mine on when i was ain dire need of cash, very very glad i didnt. they are top notch Fender killers.
