1. Just going through the same process myself. Most of the usual suspects won't cover a band, just individuals (Music Guard, Endsleigh etc) I've found Graham Sykes that will cover a 5 piece for £1million for £248/year. They will also cover a single event. Can anyone suggest anywhere else I can try?
2. One of the band I play for recently changed their monitors to the Behringer spot monitor mounted on mic stands. (http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/B205D.aspx). I had concerns about reliability but so far I have to admit they are very good. They also take up much less stage space than floor monitors.
3. Is it a typo and you want a teacher, or are you looking for a tech? If it's a teacher, check out Nick Weldon in Rushden http://nickweldon.com/
4.
Nine Below Zero were there a couple of years before me - my brother's teacher had to make the decision whether to stick with them as lead singer (Stan's Blues Band at the time)
That would probably be at the time my wife's Uncle Kenny (Bradley) was the drummer.
5. When I ordered my DB from thomann I didn't realise you could specify the action that specifically and to be honest as it was my first double bass I wouldn't have had a clue what to ask for. Luckily they just asked if I wanted it set up for jazz or orchestral. When mine arrived, yes the bridge was flat but they had put some pencil markings on the bass that showed where to place it. Very helpful and luckily the sound post was still in place. Another nice touch I thought was that they had put the bass in the gig bag I ordered and then wrapped the whole lot in the original packaging making it better protected for transport. It took them 3-4 days for delivery in mid December 2010 though the snow we had at the time. As you can guess, I was a very happy customer and would highly recommend using Thomann.
6.
Boo I guess it hasn't sold well enough for them to keep up the higher powered stuff then. Baws... Eude
If they didn't sell enough it was only because they didn't manufacture enough. About 6 months ago or so when I was in the market for one I couldn't find a shop in the country that had any stock. They were all saying 'we should have some in 2 weeks', then it was going to be next month, come august there was still no stock. I bought a GK MB500 instead as there was no clear indication if and when anyone would have any stock delivered.
7. 88/89 - Peavey TKO 80 (bought with a Squier P that I still own after 1 defret and 3 resprays) early 90's Trace Elliott 715 combo (not sure where that ended up) mid 90's Trace Elliot RAH300 + 1048 + 1153 (blew up to be replaced with.... early 00's Mesa Boogie mPulse 360 2010 Roland Bass Cube 30 2011 GK MB500 Still using the Trace cabs but would like to upgrade to something lighter and more efficient.
8. Also had very good experience of PMT in Northampton. Nearly 2 years ago I was in the market for a small combo. I went in and they set me up in one of the booths and went and fetched every model I might be interested for me then left me alone to play for a while. No pressure, just very helpful and pleasant. No surprise then that they made a sale that day
9. For me the biggest benefit to knowing theory is how much easier it makes communicating with other musicians. It is so much easier to express ideas if you all use the same terminology using a language that is designed for describing music.
10. I've been in a similar situation a couple of times before. It is very easy to spend time playing the songs that you find easier as most people tend to avoid the more difficult things if something simpler is available so what I do is to create a spread sheet (or similar) with a list of all the songs in the set and then I colour code them. Green if I am comfortable with the song, Orange if I can play it with a chart and Red if I don't know it. Now I can see at a glance what I really should be practicing. It also gives you a sense of satisfaction and progress as you see the list turn to green. As mentioned above I also create CDs and playlists so that I can be listening to the tunes in the car and at work.
11. I was talking to the audiologist at at Northampton General Hospital a couple of weeks ago. He told me that the plug they provide are the same ER one, they just don't make a profit on them. He quoted £20 per ear. He also said that I should have 30db filters in them. This was based on an average band playing at 110db so 30db of cut brings it down to 80db which he said was the recommended level from the HSE. Lots of good information here http://www.hse.gov.uk/noise/
12. I'd like to see phantom power on basses with active pickups. Would never have to worry about a battery going flat again.
13. Does it only happen in the rehearsal space? Could it be a mains power issue? I've heard, but have never experienced, that these types of amps are a lot more sensitive to fluctuating power supply issues.
14.
Either a few of the posts in this thread have a severe lack of smilies, or some people actually think The Orange amp company and The Orange mobile phone/internet company are the same thing ?
So where does that leave me? Will phantom power damage my phone or not?
15. I use hard cases and don't own a gig bag. I was thinking of lightening my load and getting a gig bag until I saw this thread over on TB: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f8/my-brand-...stroyed-779573/
16. What about creating a shop if CafePress? or something like that. That way every one everyone can choose their own items with the bass chat logo. You can get the logo put on stickers, badges, t-shirts, caps, iPhone cases or thongs . I couldn't find wrist bands on there though.
17.
Never! Only when im 6ft under, and if my mrs doesnt put my bass in my coffin im coming back to haunt her
Or take up double bass, it can be your coffin.
18.
Plus they are, as the name suggests, pocket sized - which is handy!
How big does your pocket have to be? According to the description it is 417 pages
19. I bought a MIM 5 String Jazz a few years ago, and becuase I was a precocious youngster it had to be the right colour with the right scratch plate so it was ordered in. After a 3 month wait it finally arrived and I hated it. Being to proud to admit a mistake it stayed in it's case for a few years. Last year I was involved in a project that needed a low D so being the only fiver I had and with it being mothballed for so long I ordered a new set of strings. Instant transformation! I've now shimmed the neck to resolve the mile high action and now it is one of my favourites.
20. Absolutely, one if the biggest reasons for not having screen speaker cable is cost. Secondly, it simply isn't necessary. The types of interference/noise picked up by cables is so low compared to the signal carried in the cable that it has no bearing. On an instrument or mic cable, the noise is much bigger compared to the signal and will have a significant impact as it gets pre-amped along with the voice or instrument.
21. I think that the long drawn out endings are best suited to the last song in a set. If you want to keep people on the dance floor don't give them an excuse to leave, keep the endings short or better still not at all. Rehearsed segues between songs are great at keeping the momentum going and can really add some polish to a show.
22.
If you can pick up a Boss CE-2 though, do.
I was about to post the same. I find my CEB-3 a bit meh, but really wish I had never sold my CE-2.
23. I use a Joe Meek preamp in my studio/practice area so find that gbQ pedal interesting but I can't help thinking that the EQ section will confuse some people. It's a parametric EQ that looks like a graphic
24. A few years ago I went to a party where my old band were playing, between the sound check and the first set their new bass player had a phone call asked if I could play the gig as he had to leave. It was good fun and the band were so annoyed with their bass player that I played the next 4 gigs.
