1. I still have the strings that came fitted to my Thomann bass before I put Spirocores on it. They're not great, but will at least get you started and find out if it is worth investing in a better set. If you PM me your address you can have them.
2. It's also possible that the problem is with your tuner. Many tuners allow you to change the reference frequency that you are tuning to. For us it should be A=440Hz. It could be that you have accidentally changed this setting without realising.
3. It sounds like you are looking for one of these http://www.performanceaudio.com/item/rolls-da134-distribution-amplifier/32581/ or these https://www.studiospares.com/ProductDetail.aspx?p=359431
4. I use music guard and they paid out when my son knocked my double bass over and snapped the neck off. I did have to get a damage report from a luthier and sent photos of the damage, but if I remember correctly I took longer to organise that than they took to pay out. I was really happy with that so renewed my policy this year and they didn't hike up the premium either.
5. We use the Behringer B205D monitors. They are designed to be used on top of a mic stand. They are great for us because they don't take up much space, on stage or in the van. Because they are on stands they are closer to your ear so don't need to get so loud reducing the risk of feedback. Just don't expect to use them to monitor your bass though.
6.
Now I know why some players wear silk gloves!
Silk gloves? I'd want a pair a marigolds before I played that bass
7. How big is the PA? And could it be downsized? I have a Peugoet 5008 which is an estate sized 7 seater. I can fit a fairly large Peavey PA (2x HiSys 115XTs + 3u Power Amp + small mixer), my 3/4 double bass and my backline in it and still fit 2 passengers.
8. Have you tried Pete Davies? http://www.dreamguitarservices.co.uk/ I have used him before a couple of times as has our guitarist.
9. I'm surprised that nobody has asked the obvious question, how much alcohol is he consuming at the gigs? In my experience this is probably the biggest cause of mistakes during a gig, so much so that I now limit myself to 1 pint at a gig even when I'm not driving. It has made a huge difference to my playing and I notice the effect it has on my band mates, I can directly correlate the number of drinks to the number and size of mistakes made by our guitarist.
10. I can fit mine in my wife's Corsa, but there is no room for passengers. I could probably fit a passenger if it had had split rear seats though.
11. It's a laptop bag for me also but a rucksack sounds like a good solution as well.
12. I also have the advantage of living in a detached house, but still don't practice after 9pm and never with the windows open.
13. Last year I did just that, but the holes weren't quite big enough, I had to make them a bit bigger first using a sheet metal punch. I picked mine up on eBay for about £7. I now have a lot more confidence in my speaker connections.
14. In my function band I use the upright for Dance With Me Tonight by Olly Murs. It always fills the dance floor.

It may be worth looking into an induction loop which will probably be more helpful to the members with hearing aids. I've seen one installed in a village hall using an old hi-fi power amp and 2-core cable for the loop, so they don't need to be complicated or expensive.
16. That was fascinating, thank you. I'm probably going to have to read the Daniel Goldmark book mentioned in the foot notes now.
17. I've had far more success by going to local jam nights. It has the advantage as well that because you will have already played with the person looking for band members you neatly bypass the audition stage.
18. I'm in two minds about X Factor, on the one hand it is only a step removed from Karaoke, but on the other they have been known to perform some great songs. Songs that my kids have now been introduced to and enjoy in a way that they wouldn't had their crusty old dad said 'Hey, have a listen to this great song that was written before you were born'
19.
ha ha ...it is a classic jam song.
No, no, no. It's the Terence Trent D'arby song.
20. I find that it also helps if you try not to use any open strings when learning the song, that will make it easier to transpose later as you can just move up and down the fretboard. Using software to change the pitch is a great tool, but when you play the same song in different bands in different keys it really helps if you don't need to learn it twice. Here a trick that I sometimes use. particularly if I have a chord chart in one key but the band then tells you it's in another is this. If the chart is in C, but the band want it in D, put you hand at the D position, look away and tell your self that your finger is playing a C. So long as you are now moving everything relative to your current position and don't look down you can continue to fool yourself that you are playing in the key that the chart is in.
21. The M-Pulse mid control is passive whereas the bass and treble are active. The upshot of this is that if you set them all to 12 o'clock you actual have a mid-scooped sound. The nature of the passive mid means that to get a mid flat sound you need to whack the mid pot all the way up. I spent a lot of time getting lost in the mix before I discovered this.
22. Didn't Bob Marley nick that for Buffalo Soldier?
23.
Can any one tell me if the NewMoon PLI covers the other musicians who are on the stage with you? As Thats what MG's PLI includes.
That's not what they told me 2 weeks ago. They told me that it only covers you and that they don't do PLI for groups. I asked this specific question as we have been asked for PLI for a wedding we are playing at next month.
