1. If you're after a combo I recommend the Ashdown EB line. They're 180 watts, which is loud enough for most gigs, they're light, have a built in compressor and come with 12" or 15" speakers. Mine has been very reliable and keeps up with even noisy drummers. You'll find them new for well under £300 which is great value for money. Here's a review http://www.guitarmagazine.co.uk/reviews.ph...5e-002215530376
2.
You think you got problems? hah! I have 9 basses, 14 guitars and 6 cars. Cars are my other addiction, gets expensive.
Oh and you forgot to tell us about your 3rd addiction.... 'Robbing Banks'. To pay for all the others.
3. Are you talking about the tic tac sound? Originally they used to double up the bass line with a baritone guitar like a danelectro strung with flatwounds. This is good example of it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6JpVmZb4bI

Listening now........sounds pretty darn good.
5.
That'd be like buying used underwear and regurgitated steak.
I do draw the line at regurgitated steak. Although my women have all been secondhand.
6. Well there was a time when music was my only source of income and I would be be forced to play crap gigs just to pay the rent. These days I have the luxury to make my excuses when I don't really want to do the gig and I often do.
7. Well here's an excellent review http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...8&hl=ray+34 and if you check for ed freidland on youtube there's a video review as well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67Fo7AKwfA0 The Ray 34 is reviewed at the end.
8. When I buy a bass, one of the things I take into consideration is, if I sold it or traded it in for a better bass, would I get the money I paid for it? Which is why I've always bought 'preloved'. I may try out basses in music shops but although I've owned 9 basses I've only ever bought one of them brand new (and lost a lot of money when I ended up selling it). There's usually plenty to choose from in the for sale section for the price of a brand new bass collection instrument and if it doesn't suit you you can always sell it on for around what you paid for it.
9. The singer in Vintage Trouble was a class act......the others in the band were trying far too hard (they need to take a chill pill). KD lang is still the real deal though.......even though she forgot her cue (she should really know where to come in she wrote the song).
10. It's amazing what a new set can do. I'm a big fan of DR Hi-Beams which can bring any boring old bass back to life.
11. You wouldn't know where I could get a midnight wine Highway 1 Jazz Bass would you? It's just I've been looking everywhere for one
12. This lot, in the USA, have a quite a lot of Squier and Fender necks available at any one time http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...e=STRK:MEWAX:IT They are more expensive but at least you can be sure they'll fit and are made to a decent standard.
13. I have a set of trubass on one of my basses.......they're great. BUT amazingly one of these does the double bass thing even better http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=131681 had a google for videos and this is probably the best http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UotbyS_sU3E...feature=related The only problem is they just look so teenie weenie.
14. I love the look but it's the artificial thing I don't like. It's the pre torn designer jeans look. Frankly I'd feel a bit silly on stage with it. If it was a 40 year old bass I wouldn't have a problem with it............but it isn't. Although if it plays as good as people say it does I could always give it a respray
15. Well I bought my Fender Bassman TV 15 from GAK at a reduced price (about £100 less than any other shop) and when I got it, it did have the odd mark on it - like it had been a demo amp in the shop or something. It was obviously not brand spanking new but I had got a reduction so I decided not to get the hump about it. Although I would have still bought it at the reduced price, I would have much preferred it if they had actually said on the website that it was B stock or demo in the first place. If you paid full price.......send it back. If you got it cheap (like I did)..........keep it.
16. I'm looking at your basscollection. Why do you need another bass? Why not sell the HW1 and buy a flat screen TV?
17. Boston's was owned and run by skanky drug dealing gangsters. The father, Roddy McLean, and son who owned it got sent down for murder after they set fire to a yacht they were sailing from Rotterdam, full of cannabis, back to Edinburgh with a customers officer (they had just been boarded by customs) on board. Pops got 25 years and junior got 12. Most of the gear they had in there was stolen to order by junkies. The last time I saw the front door of Bostons open was while I was travelling past on a bus after the owners had been serving their sentences for about a year and saw a gang of rastafarians picking it clean. They were probably hoping the remaining contents of the shop would pay off various 'debts' owed. http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2004/feb/15/d...alcohol.ukcrime Ahh, the good old days.
18. I have a strange fascination for roadworn jazzes. It's a guilty pleasure.
19. Check this out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A93b2V7ymf8 After I saw this vid I rushed out to buy one. They look and sound great but only have one handle so you wouldn't want to carry it too far (although it does have wheels). As far as volume is concerned you get the full the full 350 watts through the 15" speaker and it should keep up with most drummers. It has a retro tone which I like and has great definition no mushy sound from this amp.
20.
I was once given some advice that I believe to be true "an amp is an amp is an amp, but get some good speakers and even a cheap amp will sound good"
+1 A decent amp (and the ashdown is decent) through a good set of speakers will improve your sound no end. Invest in a decent cab first and see what improvement that makes to your sound. Then if you like you can upgrade your amp at a later date.
21. Yes I agree. It's chemistry. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't but when it does, it makes me very glad I bought that cheapo bass guitar at 16. One of my better decisions.
22. I asked Gale Ann Dorsey on her facebook page about this. If you google vids of this song she very rarely plays it. She said it's because, on that tour, she liked playing his stratocaster and he liked playing slap bass for one song a set (usually he played rhythm guitar - and she's not really into slap). Tasty Geddy Jazz he's playing there by the way.
23. I bought a set of Fender 7250ML strings the other day and they were very good straight out of the pack. They're not expensive either -you can find them for around £13. My usual brand is DR Hi - Beams which are £28 and they compare well as far as sound goes.
24.
Man up men. WE ARE BASS PLAYERS........................BE PROUD.
I have to apologise for my fellow Scotsman...............he's from Glasgow.
25. I'm hoping they have dealt with the superfly and LG reliability issues because I do like Ashdown's other amps and a mini amp like this (that you can depend on) would be exactly what I need but all the stories of superflys and LGs overheating and cutting out put me off ever buying one which is sad because, as far a reliability is concerned, I haven't had any problems whatsoever with my amp. We only hear about unreliable ashdowns but never the ones that give years of reliable service. - I have a small Ashdown EB 15 combo (which I bought for £150 secondhand) which I use for smaller gigs and it is absolutely BOMBPROOF! It has been subject to 6 years of abuse, thrown down stairs, left in boots of cars in sub zero temps for weeks, got soaked in water, turned up to 11, used and abused and played for hours on end..........and it just keeps on going. It is one of the early ones made in the UK and it's totally indestructable.
