cheers Del, (quick google of chris squire) am not a Yes fan mate so wont be looking for any inspiration there. I think a Ric is just one of those basses ive always had in mind. However like you said, I aint heard to many rave reviews recently of them. Oh aye happy belated birthday mate (seen your name at the bottom of the home page the other day)
And I've also got a friend who has a Rickenbacker 4001 which cost him a small fortune and sounds woolier than a field full of sheep. The guy who plays with Paul Weller has one and whenever I see him on TV the sound is wooly too. There's a guy who sells Rickenfakers I see popping up on basschat now and again. You should try one of those first......£299 cheap as chips. EDIT Aha ...This is the Rickenfaker guy http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-Retrovibe-RV4-Bl...ents_Guitars_CV Also does Stingrays! By the way a guy bought the jazz bass version and put up some mp3s of him playing......it sounds better than the real thing. I'll see if I can find the thread.
I hear what your saying,,,however as a said I dont see the point in having this kinda bass when you dial out the mids,,,which gets rid of the 'stingray sound'. I like being heard in ma band,,,as a three piece there aint no hiding my playing,,,plus the level I play at through ma ampeg rig certainly cuts through the mix, its specicifically the glassy sound the bass gives I dont like,,,,I had to boost the bass on the amp and the bass itself and pretty much cut out all mids so I could get a tone I like. im getting the year of this bass from the serial number on the bridge. I went onto the EB website and got the year from there.
It's strange, I have a friend who plays with a bluesband and has a MM Sterling. I really don't like the sound he gets with the MM when it's being played without the band but once the band starts up it really sounds excellent. You can hear every note and it's bassy and punchy and clear. I've heard him play through his amp with just vocal PA and also through a big P.A. and the sound is exactly the same i.e. sounds a bit iffy on it's own but really great when playing with the band. He used to play a Precision but the MM sits in the mix so much better. Maybe you should get yourself a long lead and go out front when your band are playing to see how the Stingray sounds when the rest of your band are playing. Meanwhile have a butchers at this video which shows the diffferent sounds you can get with a Stingray ...including reggae! http://www.musicmanuk.co.uk/video_stingray4.htm By the way I don't have a MM but I've been converted by seeing the guy I was talking about above play his and if I had the spare cash I'd buy yours right away.....it's a looker.

Of course I may just be jealous

Yes I know what you mean. I have a dodgy 8 year old Squire Jazz made in Indonesia which plays great and sounds better than the real thing. I have a Japanese Fender Jazz which is beautifully put together from top grade parts with a baddass bridge and US vintage pickups but I still end up playing the dodgy old Squire I bought 4th hand for £95. For some reason though I still hanker for a US Jazz Bass which would cost 9 times as much and probably won't sound or play as good...........duh?

Next time you play, tell her you don't appreciate having to chase her around all night trying to get paid (which is frankly a pain in the arse) therefore you want the money at the beginning of the night not the end. Remember she books you because you make her money........she's not doing you a favour.

Well I bought a coupla tickets. For a fiver they're cheap at the price. Although I'm sure he must have run out of amusing drunk and debauched bass guitar related anecdotes by now.............surely?

The notes are G,B,C,C#,D F#,G,Ab,A Great bassline and Andy was/is a great player.

Pup slightly out of alignment. Should i be worried?
gjones replied to dave_bass5's topic in Repairs and Technical
Hmmmm, if you're not paying for attention to detail when you pay £400 to £500 extra for a MIA Fender what are you paying for? Billy Bob and Betty Lou's health and pension plans I assume? -
Y'know I've a feeling there was probably no such thing as a 'clean' bass sound in the 60's. To keep up with a live drummer you probably had to turn everything on your tiny little tube amp up to 11. The sound on this track is probably as clean as you were ever going to get. Nice sound though.
that jazz bass looks amazing! But does it have the 70's bridge pickup spacing? I cant tell from the picture wen i compared it to the 60's Classic Vibe.
If the bridge pickup is in line with the tone control it's 70's spacing. The picture of the 70's Squier shows the pickup in a 60's configuration but that doesn't mean much because the picture on the Fender website shows the Fender Geddy Lee bass with a 60's position as well but if you check out an actual Geddy Lee you'll notice it's futher back towards the bridge (plenty of pictures of actual Geddys in the for sale section).
I took your advice and went back to the shop today. Needless to say I am now the proud owner of a Squier Vintage Modified Jazz (with a slightly wonky pickup).
Great stuff!

No bids for an Ashdown ABM bass rig - 1 day left
gjones posted a topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
No bids for an Ashdown ABM bass rig currently going for £295. And he has a very nice Fender 51 re-issue precision going cheap too- current bid £295.
I didn't get as far as plugging them in and actually hearing them but they did seem to play really nice. In fact the first one had such a nice action that I would have bought it if I had not noticed the issue with the pickup. The finish seemed really good on them too. Shame about the alignment really or it would have been a sale.
I was actually talking about the new ones which are out in September. Nobodys had the chance to play them yet.....but everybody wants one. I wouldn't worry too much about the pickups being misaligned on the VM bass you tried as I have an old standard Squire from 2002 which has the bridge and the pickups misaligned but it still plays and sounds great. I also have A Japanese Squier from the early 90's which is as good as Fender. I think you should go back to the shop and plug it in. If the strings sound unbalanced then there's a problem but if they don't (and it sounds and plays good).........buy it.

So many people are lusting after these Squiers................but nobody's actually played one yet. They may be pants!

Basschat has a lot to answer for. I've bought two new basses and a new amp since I signed up and I just bid for another bass on Ebay today. I'm doomed.

He's the dogs wotsits! And the reason I took up bass. All hail J.P.J.

I like string noise - whether it's guitar or bass. It adds the human touch. Samplers which reproduce guitar sounds actually include the noise a finger makes when it's sliding up or down a string which you can add to your recording to make it come across more like the real thing.
