Hmmmm I know what you mean about the Geddy. Maple necks help : I have 2 other Jazzes and the Geddy has the most piano like sound the others have rosewood necks.

Paul McCartney took his bass playing very seriously when he was in the Beatles. He said he that the basslines were the last thing to be added. He'd wait until everybody else had done their bit and gone home then record the bass. You can tell that in the later stuff and especially Sgt Pepper because the basslines are very complentary to the songs. especially the vocal melodies. In Let it Be (the film) the sound he has through the amp is really very overdriven...........almost fuzz bass. Not what I would have expected at all.

I've never made much money from playing music even when I was a (supposedly) professional musician. Ultimately to be playing music I enjoy is a huge privilege and now (through necessity) I have day job I would happily play for free.........and often do. I can't imagine a time in the future when I won't be playing and I hope that time will never come. Frankly as long as the music and musicians I'm involved with are up to the quality I expect I'm happy. I've played thousands of gigs and there's maybe 20 (if that) I didn't enjoy playing. All the serious songwriters and musicians I've known have had the same attitude. Some of them have gone on to play the pyramid stage at Glastonbury and some are still playing in backrooms in pubs but thier attitudes are the same i.e. the chance to play good music is a reward in itself. Of course money (lots of) would be a bonus.

As far as rotosound roundwounds are concerned if you want to get the zing back loosen the strings until they are slack - leave for a day - then tune them up again - the zing is back. I like ernie balls for their consistancy but rotos on a Jazz is the sound I hear in my head when I think 'Jazz Bass'. Although I haven't tried DRs yet.......

The beauty of his basslines is the freedom of them. He sounds like he is just improvising as he goes along. I get the feeling that if you listened to seperate takes they would all be very different from one another.

For years I played a residency with a blues band in a bar. I have to admit, in those days, we were bad boys and didn't declare the money we made to the taxman. One of the regulars there, who we got quite friendly with, was a big fan of the band and one night he asked if we would play a gig for his office Xmas Party. I said we'd be more than pleased to do the gig and, just out of curiosity asked where he worked. He replied "The Inland Revenue..........fraud dept" . It was one of those moments where time stands still and you see your life flash before your eyes. The singers face went snow white and I thought he was going to have a seizure. He must have seen the look of abject horror on our faces and the penny must have dropped because he changed the subject and it was never spoken of again. So the moral of this story is.........Karma will get you every time.

Well the serial number puts it as a 2006 bass according to the Fender website. So NOT brand new. If I didn't have 4 Jazz Basses already I'd be knocking down his door (he only lives a couple of miles from me in Edinburgh) because it does look like a nice bass. Frankly, if he wanted a decent price for it, he should have put it on ebay a long time ago.

My Jazz bass is based on the 70's model Geddy Lee bought in a pawn shop. He sanded the neck down until it was as thin as a chopstick......you could try that.

Replace the neck of the 70's Jazz with the neck from the Classic vibe.......sorted!

Well I've fitted a Fender Jazz neck to a 93-94 MIJ Squier. I tried to fit the same neck to a 2002 Indonesian Squier and it fitted the body ok but the bridge didn't have enough vertical adjustment for the strings to clear the fretboard. With a decent adjustable bridge it would have been ok.

On a random whim I swapped the maple neck from my Geddy Lee Jazz with the rosewood neck from my 1994 Jap Squier Jazz. What an extreme difference in sound. The Geddy Lee now has a much, much deeper tone (which I really like) while the Squier sounds much, much brighter. I had assumed there would be a difference in tone but never expected it to be so extreme. I'd always thought the Geddy's brightness was due to the pickup being nearer the bridge but it looks like it's almost totally due to the maple neck.They both now sound radically different to what they sounded like before the neck change. You learn something new every day.

I was planning to buy a Promethean because I wanted a lightweight, quality, flexible amp/combo and , of course, because it was the sensible thing to do. Instead I went and bought this [attachment=53848:Bassman.jpg] A combo the size and weight of a small tweed planet. Which is neither lightweight or flexible. Although to give it it's due it does sound great but I wish it had come with a forklift truck to carry it around with. Carrying it up 3 flights of stairs to my flat after every gig is something I could do without. 250 watts through a 10 inch speaker? I'm looking forward to your review with interest.
