1. Does anybody in Basschat land have any idea what make my ancient P/J actually is. I bought it in 1984 secondhand but have never been able to figure out who made it. I do remember a small Mighty Mite transfer being on the headstock when I got it so I have assumed it was put together from parts either from Mighty Mite or possibly Schecter as they were also selling bass and guitar parts back in the 70's/80's. For a short period in the early 80's Mighty Mite actually made complete basses in this P/J configuration but they were a natural wood finish and had contoured bodies. When I had it serviced about 15 years ago the guitar tech hadn't any idea what it was either but said the electronic components were very good quality. It sounds great and weighs a bleeding ton. 2.
Can anyone recommend flats that have that dull mellow sound from the moment they're put on? I've had to switch a set of brand new Chromes that were put (by the shop) onto my new CV Jazz, for a year old set from my old P-bass because the new ones were far too clanky - especially when pressing down (I don't want a ting when pressing against the fret). Funnily enough, I don't remember my first set of Chromes being this bad - but the memory is a funny old thing. So --- when I get another set of flats, what would you recommend that don't need several weeks worth of wearing in? EDIT: I was thinking of starting a new thread, but figured there were enough about flats already.
I recommend the rotosound trubass strings - tape wound so no clank. They only come in one size (massive) but don't let that put you off as they are very supple and easy to play. Herbie Flowers uses them and Paul mcCartney used them on his Hofner. They have a huge sound (really fill the bottem end nicely) and a great double bass percussive punch. Great when recorded and in a quieter band situation and I'm sure they'd be fantastic through a PA too. I've had nothing but compliments about the sound from people when I've used them. If you want that Sgt Pepper kind of sound these are the strings for you. If you play in a death metal band they're probably not.
 3. Good review. It certainly looks very nice. I've got a couple of Squier Jazzes and they're great basses for the price.
 4.
The nuts were the standard size that I've seen on any jazz bass, I would expect them to be slightly oversized to alow for some adjustment.
You could have a point there..... I was expecting a nut that didn't need any filing but now I think of it that's probably all it would have needed. Too late now though I've bought the allparts neck. Anybody fancy a 2nd hand Jazz Bass neck from C H Guitars........going cheap
 5.
So I have just started a little project and need a replacement jazz neck. It seems the UK market is particularly painful on this though, no one seems to stock mighty mite or warmoth that I can find?? So I have found a couple of other options, but I can't for the life of me gauge how good they are and why the price difference is so much. Option A. Friendly Korean neck, relatively inexpensive http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...IT#ht_500wt_928 Option B. Nearly 100 smackers more, looks the same http://www.wdmusic.co.uk/product/Jazz_Bass...ar_Finish_JM-CL Can anyone give an insight or alternative here? Budget is hopefully around £100, second hand is totally fine too Thanks!
Because the first one is not worth using for kindling. I bought a finished jazz neck from this lot and it was totally crap. Finishing on it had been done by a madman with a sanding machine and the nut was so gigantic that when I attached it to my bass body and put strings on the action was so high I could have used the bass to shoot arrows with. A lesson learned and £66 down the swanny river. I have just bought this one and hopefully it's what I'm looking for http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...e=STRK:MEWNX:IT Good luck.
 6.
I'm more surprised you have so many people in the audience who 1) know what the bassist does & 2) notice the difference in the tones!
Yes.....unless the sound is strikingly different I would assume your average punter probably wouldn't notice. Maybe they were commenting on the colour not the sound?
 7. I rotate them so they don't feel unloved (unless the venue is dodgy which is when I take my trusty cheapo Squier).
 8. I know excellent drummers who can play loudly or quietly and you never need to tell them to shut the F**k up! If they ever turn around and tell you they can't play quieter then they're crap drummers, end of story. Power and groove does not always have to equal volume. Not every drummer has to be Animal from the Muppets.
 9. The stack knob Fender Jazz Bass with 2 knobs was actually a 1960/61. 1961/62 was when the 3 knobs appeared and neither the 60/61 or 61/62 had block inlays Fender issued them late 60's and through the 70's. But stack knobs and block inlays is a Jazz Bass I'd like to see. I'd buy one!
 10. I would suggest you try one of the new USA built Precisions. I've never been a big fan of them but the one I tried sounded excellent. Very punchy.
 11. Guess which one of these basses I dislike the most http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1g9LcZTTJk...feature=related
 12.
However do expect a delay of a few days whilst customs have it. Usually takes about a week to arrive, 3 days to ship from the US and then 3 days in UK customs! They then write to you with a bill including import taxes and a bizarre handling fee. I just had a USA 1979 Precision (minus pickup and bridge) which cost me $1000 - the bill from Parcel Force who paid the fees was £97, just to give you an example.
Those import taxes seem totally random. I bought a bass 3 years ago off ebay from a guy in California. The bass cost £325 and the charges cost me £95. There seems no rhyme or reason to the charges I frankly think they just pick a random number.
 13. I've got an old Ashdown EB 150 watts and it's definitely loud enough to deal with a loud drummer (it has many times). You can get them for £100 secondhand and they have an output for an extension speaker if you need it. Great amps for the price.
 14. Do you mean a bass that does everything and sounds great on every type of music? Or something that does one thing really, really well?
 15. The guy selling it must thing that giving it a scrub with a wire brush and dettol will detract from it's Mojo in some way. Actually under all that filthy crud there could be a decent bass....who knows.
 16.
Another video from GTaranaki Festival. After that noisy girl there´s a great solo byt guy and the other bassist. Chek it out.
Nice jumper.
 17.
Anyone who's used the black nylons (either LaBellas or the Rotosound ones) can you tell me how long the black nylon coating lasts? One of the additional attractions of flats is that of hardly ever having to change strings - and while I love the look of the black ones, if they get tatty so that I'm changing as often as a Mark King soundalike then it defeats part of the object.
I've had the rotosound trubass tapewounds on my P/J bass for a long time. If you put a foam damper next to the bridge you'll get a very percussive thump with great definition when playing with a band. Sound great with a pick too. I recommend you add a little mid to your sound to bring their special character out. I prefer them to flatwounds which can sound a bit wooly.

 19. Hmmmmmm......I'm getting deja vu here. Didn't you post a thread about how great your cheapo OLP was recently? I wholeheartedly agree it's not the name on the headstock, how much it costs or whether it's made of plywood or platinum that matters. It's what a bass sounds like and feels like to play. My cheapo 5th hand 2002 Squire sounds and plays better than all my other Jazzes. Like you say.....it's got the Mojo (whatever that mysterious thing is?).

 21.
His diction is for crap, but at least it's an individual voice and not some interchangeable, autopitch corrected, beige voice.
Well I don't know if it's an individual voice, It's Stevie Ray Vaughn's.........but that trio of his sure can rock!
 22.
Apparently (and this was quoted in the bass mags of the late eighties so must be true...) JJ would coat his strings with margerine and leave them for weeks until they were really, really, really dead.
I heard it was lard!
 23.
I'd put money on it being a Nash, Guy mentions them at the back of the book, in his rundown of all the gear he's used over the years.
Good detective work! I think you're right, it looked a lot like this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Nash-Jazz-Bass--JB-6...3d59a25ff1040bc
 24.
Well I bought a coupla tickets. For a fiver they're cheap at the price. Although I'm sure he must have run out of amusing drunk and debauched bass guitar related anecdotes by now.............surely?
I was wrong.
 25.
The black Jazz? Dunno, I didn't hang around for the meet 'n'greet. What makes you think it was a Bravewood?
Just the fact it was reliced and didn't have a Fender logo on it (couldn't make that logo out). I know Bravewood do that kind of thing http://www.guitarrelic.com/bravewood-guita...avewood-guitars
