1. I'm sure it's a lovely bass but I think you need to post bigger pictures to get the juices of prospective buyers flowing
2. Yes I know what you mean. I have a dodgy 8 year old Squire Jazz made in Indonesia which plays great and sounds better than the real thing. I have a Japanese Fender Jazz which is beautifully put together from top grade parts with a baddass bridge and US vintage pickups but I still end up playing the dodgy old Squire I bought 4th hand for £95. For some reason though I still hanker for a US Jazz Bass which would cost 9 times as much and probably won't sound or play as good...........duh?
3. Next time you play, tell her you don't appreciate having to chase her around all night trying to get paid (which is frankly a pain in the arse) therefore you want the money at the beginning of the night not the end. Remember she books you because you make her money........she's not doing you a favour.
4. Well I bought a coupla tickets. For a fiver they're cheap at the price. Although I'm sure he must have run out of amusing drunk and debauched bass guitar related anecdotes by now.............surely?
5. The notes are G,B,C,C#,D F#,G,Ab,A Great bassline and Andy was/is a great player.
6. Hmmmm, if you're not paying for attention to detail when you pay £400 to £500 extra for a MIA Fender what are you paying for? Billy Bob and Betty Lou's health and pension plans I assume?
7. Y'know I've a feeling there was probably no such thing as a 'clean' bass sound in the 60's. To keep up with a live drummer you probably had to turn everything on your tiny little tube amp up to 11. The sound on this track is probably as clean as you were ever going to get. Nice sound though.
8.
that jazz bass looks amazing! But does it have the 70's bridge pickup spacing? I cant tell from the picture wen i compared it to the 60's Classic Vibe.
If the bridge pickup is in line with the tone control it's 70's spacing. The picture of the 70's Squier shows the pickup in a 60's configuration but that doesn't mean much because the picture on the Fender website shows the Fender Geddy Lee bass with a 60's position as well but if you check out an actual Geddy Lee you'll notice it's futher back towards the bridge (plenty of pictures of actual Geddys in the for sale section).
9.
I took your advice and went back to the shop today. Needless to say I am now the proud owner of a Squier Vintage Modified Jazz (with a slightly wonky pickup).
Great stuff!
10. No bids for an Ashdown ABM bass rig currently going for £295. And he has a very nice Fender 51 re-issue precision going cheap too- current bid £295. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ashdown-ABM-Bass-RIG...=item3f01d76aed
11. There's a run on Geddy Lees...........quick sell yours now before it's worthless!
12.
I didn't get as far as plugging them in and actually hearing them but they did seem to play really nice. In fact the first one had such a nice action that I would have bought it if I had not noticed the issue with the pickup. The finish seemed really good on them too. Shame about the alignment really or it would have been a sale.
I was actually talking about the new ones which are out in September. Nobodys had the chance to play them yet.....but everybody wants one. I wouldn't worry too much about the pickups being misaligned on the VM bass you tried as I have an old standard Squire from 2002 which has the bridge and the pickups misaligned but it still plays and sounds great. I also have A Japanese Squier from the early 90's which is as good as Fender. I think you should go back to the shop and plug it in. If the strings sound unbalanced then there's a problem but if they don't (and it sounds and plays good).........buy it.
13. So many people are lusting after these Squiers................but nobody's actually played one yet. They may be pants!
14. Basschat has a lot to answer for. I've bought two new basses and a new amp since I signed up and I just bid for another bass on Ebay today. I'm doomed.
15. He's the dogs wotsits! And the reason I took up bass. All hail J.P.J.
16. I like string noise - whether it's guitar or bass. It adds the human touch. Samplers which reproduce guitar sounds actually include the noise a finger makes when it's sliding up or down a string which you can add to your recording to make it come across more like the real thing.
17. Hmmmm I know what you mean about the Geddy. Maple necks help : I have 2 other Jazzes and the Geddy has the most piano like sound the others have rosewood necks.
18.
'London Calling' by the Clash. Not really difficult, but fun to play and sounds great
+1
19. Paul McCartney took his bass playing very seriously when he was in the Beatles. He said he that the basslines were the last thing to be added. He'd wait until everybody else had done their bit and gone home then record the bass. You can tell that in the later stuff and especially Sgt Pepper because the basslines are very complentary to the songs. especially the vocal melodies. In Let it Be (the film) the sound he has through the amp is really very overdriven...........almost fuzz bass. Not what I would have expected at all.
20. I've never made much money from playing music even when I was a (supposedly) professional musician. Ultimately to be playing music I enjoy is a huge privilege and now (through necessity) I have day job I would happily play for free.........and often do. I can't imagine a time in the future when I won't be playing and I hope that time will never come. Frankly as long as the music and musicians I'm involved with are up to the quality I expect I'm happy. I've played thousands of gigs and there's maybe 20 (if that) I didn't enjoy playing. All the serious songwriters and musicians I've known have had the same attitude. Some of them have gone on to play the pyramid stage at Glastonbury and some are still playing in backrooms in pubs but thier attitudes are the same i.e. the chance to play good music is a reward in itself. Of course money (lots of) would be a bonus.
21.
Quite a lot of listens but no comments? It doesn't sound that bad? Does it?
It sounds excellent -very Norman Watt-Roy from the Blockheads (both your playing and the bass sound). Not bad for a cheapo!
22. As far as rotosound roundwounds are concerned if you want to get the zing back loosen the strings until they are slack - leave for a day - then tune them up again - the zing is back. I like ernie balls for their consistancy but rotos on a Jazz is the sound I hear in my head when I think 'Jazz Bass'. Although I haven't tried DRs yet.......
23.
I really want to put a pick up cover on my JV Jazz bass over the neck pick up. However I am aware that drilling a couple of holes in the body for the screws could affect the value if I come to sell it on. Kevin
Don't sell it then.......keep it.
24. The beauty of his basslines is the freedom of them. He sounds like he is just improvising as he goes along. I get the feeling that if you listened to seperate takes they would all be very different from one another.
