1. Yes, I'm a happy bunny with my new (preloved) CIJ 62 RI as well. For the price - £380 - it's a cracker. I've kept the Fender strings it came with on it because it sounds so good but will soon try out a set of DR Hi-Beams. The neck is almost as slim as my Geddy Lee and it's very easy to play and ooozes quality. I have to say, I've really liked every Jazz I've ever owned (even the bog standard Indonesian Squier that cost me £95) as they all had their own individual qualities. But because of the combination of sound and playability this one is probably the best of the lot. I think you may be well and truly converted to 'The way of the Jazz' as well now. Long may the love affair continue.
2. After hunting around for quite a while I now get my sets of hex keys at maplins. The ones that fit my basses nd my strat are 1.5mm.
3.
Looks real enough to me - Fender couldn't make a full decal fit to some left-handers so the main name is all you get in this case.
Well you learn something new every day.
4. Fender Geddy Lee Jazz bass with the thinnest fastest neck known to man. Secondhand it usually goes for under £500 looks the part and sound fantastic too. But don't take my word here's the man himself playing the thing
5. The 'Fender' logo is correct for the period but there is no 'Jazz Bass' after it. This makes me think it's not a real Fender neck but an aftermarket neck with a Fender decal added.
6.
Having said that I haven't noticed the pickup spacing, so will take a look tonight Si
Bridge pickup directly over the tone control.......Looks like 70's spacing to me.
7. Pleasures all mine. A lovely bass.
8. I was in a small bar called 55 Bar in NYC in 2006 on holiday when a guy walked in and set up in the corner near the door to the lavvy with his band and started playing. The guitarist and his band completely blew me away! I hadn't heard anything that good since I saw Jeff Beck back in the 80's. I just assumed they were a really, really good bar band until I had a quick chat with the amazing young female drummer (Kim somebody or other). She was standing outside having a cigarette and I asked her where she was playing next and she said L.A. I asked who with and she said casually 'Beyonce'. It was then that I realised this wasn't some amazing bar band but obviously something a bit more special than that. The guitarist was Mike Stern - Who up until then I had never heard of. If you're ever in New York I recommend 55 Bar in the Village where Mike plays regularly (he regularly nips in and plays when he's not touring). A fantastic night guaranteed! And amazingly it's all for free. Aha a quick google and here's the lady herself playing in bar 55 with the man himself http://jonmccaslinjazzdrummer.blogspot.com...pson-kicks.html
9.
The first thing you have to realise as a Bass Player is that NOBODY ELSE CARES what you sound like. As far as Sound Engineers are concerned, YOU DON'T COUNT as far as the overall sound goes. As has been mentioned before, if you aren't there for the Final Mix, and are willing to fight every inch of the way to get 'your' sound out on the recording, nobody else gives a monkey's toss. Argue with me all you want, but 99.9% of Engineers will give you the 'wooly duvet' sound, unless you are prepared to push every inch of the way until someone listens.
Sad but true. Most engineers AND your fellow band members are probably totally unaware what a 'good' bass sound can add to a mix. You need to be there at mixdown and be assertive if you don't want to end up with the dreaded 'woolly tone'. Saying that, I had to miss my bands final album mixdown today (for various tedious social obligation reasons) and am 100% convinced my fellow band members will take the opportunity to make my bass sound like rice pudding.
10. Just bought a Fender Jazz Bass 62 RI - he drove 100 miles to meet me half way and drop it off - good guy. Buy/sell with confidence.
11. What a beautiful Jazz! When it was advertised last time I didn't have the cash. If I wasn't in the middle of buying a 62 RI from another basschatter I'd buy this honey from you today. Anyway here's a bump for a lovely bass.
12.
I might just keep checking eBay and this very site for a Fender Bassman combo. Sound great, they're American (brand, at least!) and look traditional! Thanks for your help everybody. Just gotta keep looking for a second hand gem to pop up! Truckstop
I have one and it sure looks purty in a very vintage tweedy way. It's also mighty heavy with just the one strap on the top (although it does come with removable wheels). Soundwise it'll certainly get you what you're looking for as well.
13.
PL playing a Jazz!
And An Ibanez Blazer.
14.
I'd never take a cut from Mr East, my reward is he will get more business! I hope you like your new 62! Where are you getting it from? What colour?
This is it http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...;hl=fender+jazz I already have a Geddy Lee but have always hankered after a 62 RI
15. Thanks for taking the time to record those examples. That J-Retro is very nice indeed. You may have made my mind up for me. You should get a cut from Mr East for all the extra profit he's going to make this month. By the way I'm picking up a CIJ 62 reissue Jazz on Sunday..........hope it sounds as good as yours.
16. Yesterday night I played a gig with my bands old drummer because the new drummer couldn't make it. Although I really like the guy I hate his drumming style (Mitch Mitchell on speed). Every time he does a random extended drum fill he completely loses the beat and I've got to try and keep the rhythm going on my own somehow. What makes matters worse another random drummer came up and blethered on about how fantastic he was. I kept my mouth firmly zipped! But our new drummer is back playing with us on Friday..............I'll be so glad to see him I may just give him a big sloppy kiss!
17. They come notched and un-notched. With the un-notched ones you're supposed to get a file and notch it yourself. Possibly that bridge has been on a few different basses and everytime it was installed on a different bass another notch had to be filed. Since you have a choice I would experiment and see what feels comfortable. If none of the notches feel comfortable you could always just file another (if there's room).
18. We are the ever vigilant guardians of 'The Bass'. Disregard us at your peril wrongdoers!
19. I haven't a clue about that particular bass (but I used to own a japanese Yamaha BB something or other in the 90's and it was excellent quality) but one thing I do know is you'll pay about 30% duty when you import it into the country - which is what happened to me when I bought my bass secondhand from the USA. I just thought I'd make you aware of that if you didn't know it already.
20. I'm pretty sure he used a pick? I think? Nope, I'm wrong http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsdU1-ZBaQY
21. I think it's probably been thrown back into the skip from whence it was found.
22. I've flirted with the idea of a J-retro too but decided against it because if I needed versatility I'd have gone for a MM Sterling or an Yamaha watchamacallit not a classic Fender. But saying that I'd be interested in what your before and after opinion is of the Retro when you fit it..
23.
more of a funk-blues thing really, but awesome for bass. the eponymous l.p. is well worth seeking out, especially their version of Dylans' 'ballad of hollis brown', and their version of 'voodoo'. of course getting someone with a voice like Aaron Neville is the hard bit..
Possibly funky reggae? But it's definitely reggae.
24. This a nice easy ZZ Top song which you can play while drinking your pint with your free hand (my favorite type)
