1. I bought this instrument in 2015 as the logistics of transport etc were becoming a problem with my previous traditional acoustic bass. The Yamaha is definitely the the best of the so called ‘Stick Basses’ having an authentic neck which, with a heel offering the traditional ‘D neck stop’, plays exactly like a traditional double bass. It also has a semi-solid body and fantastic powerful sound from the active pickup system with zero feedback, a big problem with my previous acoustic bass amplification. It packs neatly into a carrying case and is easily assembled. It will be sold with a decent bow and a König & Meyer bass stand. The bass is strung with relatively new D’Addario Helicore Pizzicato strings and is in extremely good condition, showing light signs of wear which I have tried to show in the photographs. This is difficult to avoid with such a large instrument, especially in the area where the frame fixes onto the body. I now find that since Covid, I am less active musically and find that the bass guitar is more suitable for my needs. I live near Edinburgh
2. SOLD Fishman Platinum Pro Bass EQ/Preamp for sale in original box with instructions and in perfect condition except for the clip described below. Useful for electric bases and essential for Double Bass players to counter feedback by using the frequency and phase controls. One of the clips which holds the battery compartment in place broke off when I was changing the battery recently (see photo). The remaining clip still retains the battery compartment securely, and the function of the unit is not affected in any way.
3. Since I have used my Yamaha Silent bass, which I bought through this forum a couple of years ago, almost exclusively on gigs, I have decided to sell my Elysia double bass. It's a matter of transport. The bass is in good condition and well played-in. It has some minor cosmetic dings which I have endeavoured to show in the photos. Nothing serious. It was professionally set up when I bought it 5 years ago by luthier Kenny McDonald of Edinburgh who has now retired. The action at the end of the fingerboard is 5mm at the G string and 8mm at the E. It has also had a new fixed bridge fitted a couple of years ago by Luthier John Wilkinson, also of Edinburgh, who reset the sound post, fitted a Shadow SH950 pickup and Helicore 'Hybrid' HH610 Medium tension strings. It also comes with a cover and decent stand. The Shadow is the best I have used and is is well fitted. The Bass is made of all-solid carved wood, plays really well acoustically or amplified and sounds (and looks) beautiful. Anyone is welcome to audition it. No trades please
4. I have one and although I haven't measured its height, It suits my 6ft with the nut at eye level and plenty of pin left to extend.
5. Since I have used my Yamaha Silent bass, which I bought through this forum a couple of years ago, almost exclusively on gigs, I have decided to sell my Elysia double bass. It's a matter of transport as I am getting on a bit now. The bass is in good condition but is well played-in and has some minor dings which are consistent with it having been gigged. Anyone who has played an upright double bass will know how hard it is to avoid this. It is a really good bass made of all solid carved wood (maybe the sides are laminated maple, I'm not sure). New set-up Elysia bases sell for well over £2,000 Anyone is welcome to visit to try it out.
6. When I bought my 3/4 Stentor Elysia double bass about 6 years ago, it came with bow. In spite of having played DB in schools orchestras when I was young, I can't seem to get a good sound with the bow - scratchy with squeaks. I have hybrid strings by Helicore HH610 medium tension. I'm wondering if the bow is strung with synthetic material or something, or am I just crap (that's possible)? It may also be the bass, which is ok, but not as resonant as I would like. If it's me, then I would appreciate a pointer to a Youtube video related to bass bowing technique. Thanks
7. Thanks for that. I need new strings anyway. I'll give the settings a try as well.
8. Thanks Phil. I'll look at the clips and maybe fit one. I've seen Dave Swift use a third party pickup, so he must think it's worth it. I like the look of the Full Circle as it doesn't need any adjustments to the wing slot in the bridge. I take it you disconnect the existing pickup by removing the battery. Thanks again for your help
9. Hi. The Yamaha is a really great bass. I think it is the best of the non traditional basses and hope you sell it soon. I hope you don't mind me asking, but what is the advantage of the full circle pickup over the on board device? I have a Yamaha and wondered if I could get an improvement.
10. I have Yamaha SLB 200 and am happy with the sound I get with the on-board pickup although I admit that it could be a little more like a double bass. I notice that serious users of this instrument have usually added a proprietary pickup such as a Full Circle or Shadow. Can anyone advise as to the benefits of this approach?
11. Yes it was Real Electronics. I've always found them ok but they want £65 for fitting a speaker that I could do in two minutes. They have also offered to get an express delivery (they previously estimated 4 weeks delivery from Italy) for £50. Not impressed with Markbass either. There are only a few sizes of speakers so why don't RE keep a stock?
12. Thanks for that. Is the Markbass driver neodymium?
13. They are also quoting a 4 week delivery from Italy.
14. Trouble is, I can't source a Markbass unit. Apparently they don't allow third party sales. It needs to be a 400w unit. I don't care about it being yellow but would hope that the fixing holes coincide with the cabinet baffle. Any ideas regarding speaker makes?
