I've used the 300 watt Line6 combo and even though most of the settings were a waste of time it was plenty loud enough with a decent speaker fitted and I could get a decent sound out of it without too much twiddling. But if something is being discounted as much as those Line6 400 watt combos are it's probably for a good reason so I would stay well clear if I were you. I second the idea of buying 2nd hand as you get much more bang for your buck.

As I type it's sitting at £375 but I'm not sure of it's pedigree? I do know that mid to late eighties was a transition period for Fender and some of the basses were made up of parts from different years. This may be the reason it has an early eighties 'American Standard' scratch plate, a 1990 serial number and a Mex style truss rod adjuster on the headstock. Very strange but a bargain if it's the real deal. I'm always swapping necks on my Jazz and it does make a big difference to the sound. I think I prefer the warmer sound rosewood gives me but I prefer the look of maple. Catch 22

Can you get an effect that makes a sound like a bass guitar plugged into an amp? If you can, I recommend you get one of those.

You need to find a band with some 'hungry' band members. Either hungry for money or people who love to play. Don't get bogged down by musicians who like to 'dabble' and endlessly [size=4][font=arial, sans-serif]procrastinate. I play in one band where the members play primarily for money another for the love of playing and the 3rd is full of lawyers, doctors and financial advisers and which is a band in nothing but name, as nobody has a window in their busy schedules to actually get in a room together and play. Which is very frustrating (there's also been 19 members since it was formed 5 years ago in which time we've done about 10 gigs, which tells it's own story).[/font][/size]

When I fitted my preamp I initially fitted the wires the wrong way round which resulted in a weak sound from the pickups. I realised I must have done something wrong and then swopped them around and got a much stronger punchier sound. Maybe your front pickup is wired up wrongly............just a suggestion.

I don't have a great love of bass amps either. I only care if it sounds good. Most of them are anonymous black boxes.I've had peaveys, hartkes, marshalls, tc electronics, fenders and ashdowns but I don't care if the black box has a prestigious name on it or not and I've played through many amps from 'uncool' manufacturers which sounded great (a Laney and a line 6 LD300 comes to mind). The only amp I ever grew attached to was my Fender TV15 which was a gorgeous looking, big tweed covered, modern reworking of the original Fender Bassman. In the end it was just too heavy for me so it had to go.

I friend of mine was quoted £1,000 for an acoustic duo to play at her wedding - and amazingly she was prepared to pay it!!! In the end her fiance, who was having to stump up the money, put his foot down and booked a 5 piece covers band for a lot less than a grand. Having played in duos and trios it really does depend on the occasion and the venue (and how good you are). Anything from £150 to £300 would be the going rate. But if it's a wedding or a corporate event the skys the limit.

I had the TV15 which is the modern equivalent for bass. Great sound and looks but heavy, heavy, heavy. I'm still waiting for my Fender custom shop pickups to be delivered after waiting almost a month. The shop has to order them from Fender and, supposedly, they are taking their time to deliver, although I suspect that cash flow problems may be the issue.
