  3. This is a good question. I tend to go to music shops when I know the place won't be crowded with the usual teenage shredders which means it's often empty and you can tend to feel a bit self conscious. I'm lucky in that I play a lot of blues so tend to just do some walking bass lines and switch off my brain in order to allow me to listen to the sound of the bass. Last time I was trying basses I played the sailors hornpipe (which I often play as a warm up) it gave the guys in the shop a bit of a laugh if nothing else.

Cheers Geoff [/quote] Interesting...... I just couldn't get on with the TC Electronic head I had because, although it was light as a feather, it didn't have that 'weight' you're talking about. It's difficult to put my finger on the quality you describe but I felt it was if a whole band of low mid frequencies was missing on the TC. However I twiddled with it the amp just couldn't produce the sound that I wanted. Now I've bought an ABM it has the 'authority' that the TC lacked (I think the technical term is 'bollocks'). Maybe this lack of 'authority' is a feature of digital amps? Or maybe it's a figment of my imagination? I was hoping the MiBass would be different.

  6. I did the same a few years ago. Lot's of fun and easy peasy to learn as well. You can't beat a good bit of Rock 'N' Roll.

That probably includes me too. I think the neck and pickups contribute most to the sound of a bass - I've learned this from experience, having swopped a lot of necks and pickups in my time. And of course there's the famous video of the guy on talkbass who swopped the body of his alder Jazz Bass with a plank he found in his shed, then recorded a demo with the original bass and one with the body replaced with the plank. Could anybody tell the difference? I'm not telling! Go find the video on Talkbass for yourself.
  8. Hmmmmm.......all that's Japanese is the neck it seems. And those holes in the back of the body aren't horizontal. Looks like somebody went nuts with a black & Decker. That may be part of the reason why it's going for £10.50.
  9. Took them 3 weeks to send my Ashdown Abm cover and Yodel say they've attempted delivery twice but haven't left a card or phoned me.

Interestingly the old vintage style spriral saddle Fender bridges solve the problem of dodgy string spacing by having multiple grooves like a thread on a bolt (the rumour is that Leo actually used cut down bolts as a cheap alternative to getting them custom made). I used to have a 62 reissue Jazz and I was so impressed by this low tech solution that I've bought one off the internet and fitted it to my other Jazz. No more spring spacing problems for me. So if your bass will take a Fender bridge this could be the answer to your problem

  12. It's the DADDY! I've just recently bought an ABM 500 III and it sounds fantastic. I had a TC Electronic classic 450 head which I replaced with the ABM. as I couldn't get the sound I heard in my head with the TC amp however much I twiddled with it but as soon as I plugged into the Ashdown there was the sound I wanted - deep, defined, warm and punchy with my 2X12. It's got so much low down grunt I turn the bass dial down to zero and use the two low mid sliders to give me the bottom end I need. It also sounds great with my double bass. The TC head just generated so much feedback it was pointless even trying to plug my DB into it.
  13. Decent rootsy type (ie non jazzers) double bass players are thin on the ground. Once the word gets out you're available you'll have to beat bands competing for your charms off with a stick.
  14. I've had 3 Japanese jazzes - a 62 reissue from 99, a Geddy Lee from 2006 and an old Squier from 1993/94. They all were great in their own way but the one I kept was the Squier. I've swopped the neck from rosewood to maple and fitted a J-Retro pre amp and it sounds great. Even before I fitted the J-Retro the sound of the pickups was just what I was looking for (much darker than the other two Jazzes). I'll probably own a few more basses over the next few years but I don't think I'll ever part with my Squier.
