1.
Last time I saw Roddy Jnr was in Chambers Street after he got out; he'd lost a stack of weight & said he'd got stuck on junk while he was inside.
Weirdly enough, the last time I saw Roddy jnr was when I went looking for the very bass I mention in this post when it got stolen. I'm very glad Bostons didn't have it............ for both our sakes.
  2. I know a lot of musicians who have never lost that almost obsessive enthusiasm for music and that desire to stretch themselves. I'd like to count myself as one of them. Nothing worse than reaching a plateau and getting comfortable churning out the same old stuff.
  3.
In some ways yes, but in cold reality it was a dog. An EB0 converted quite badly into an EB3, with an awful DiMarzio 1 instead of the mudbucker. I saw it after I sold it in the window of the legendary "Bostons" [s]fence[/s] junk shop in Edinburgh & it was even worse; AND they wanted £265 for it (This was in the mid 80's "has to be a custom or nothing" era.) The logo was smashed & the headstock had numerous fag burns in it. It wouldn't have got that way if I'd kept it - but it would have cost a fortune I didn't have to renovate it. s/n 90***9 if anyone has it?
Last time I passed Bostons it's owner had just got given 25 years in the pokey and there was a large group of Rastafarian looking gentlemen loading the contents of the shop into a van. I'm assuming your bass is now being played in a reggae band down in Brixton.
  4. I've still got my first bass (well officially my first bass was a piece of Jap crap called a Grant which ended up as firewood). It's the mighty mite in my signature. I wouldn't sell it because it would only get a fraction of it's real worth because it doesn't have a logo on it. It got stolen but I hunted it down in a pawnshop a year later. I'm so glad I didn't buy that Westone Thunder 1A And this is it And this is me playing it 11 years ago

    Blues?
Basically you plod along playing a walking bassline whilst a load of guitarists w*** on endlessly over the top of it, pausing occasionally to sing some bollocks about how tough their life is before playing another solo on their £5000 private stock PRS or similar.
Hmmmmmm.........you may have a point there?
  6.
I'd rather have a go in the NSX to be perfectly honest. I also dislike Jazz basses. Everyone's different
Well since I've never driven an NSX or a Ferrari I'd probably jump at the chance to drive either of them...............even if it was just to Tescos and back frankly. By the way we may have a mutual friend - Angus McCurrach (he's played with The Oxbow Lake Band) and now plays on a set of Flintstones drums with 'The Trybe' up your way.
  7. By the way I think you have a Highway 1 which may not be the best Jazz Fender ever made but change the pickups and it'll do the business. I've had four Jazzes over the last 5 years after dismissing them (just like you) for the previous 25.
  8. Don't ask me? I think it's probably because it's a classic design. There's probably a thousand other basses out there made by other manufacturers which are better in many ways but you don't fantasise about driving through the Swiss Alps in a Honda NSX you fantasise about driving through the Swiss Alps in a Ferrari.

    Blues?
Thanks folks, great advice, will deffinatley listen to all of them. Could anyone shed any light on what a 16 bar blues is and what someone should do at a blues jam, do you ask to play a certyain song or just go with what the band are doing? Cheers
Listen to blues. Some are 12 bars long, some are 16 bars long. The standard is 12 bars but it's not a hard and fast rule.
  10.
Let's move the earth wire into it's channel do that only a small part of the wire is left to make contact with the underside of the bridge plate Let's get the bridge plate in place Simple job now to wire the pickups and earth leads into the control plate next.
Very interesting. I have an old Japanese 'Silver Series' Squier from 1994 and it doesn't have the earthing wire coming through the little tunnel from the control cavity to the bridge it just has the earthing strip coming from under the bridge into the bridge cavity which is then soldered to the plate under the bridge pickup, just like the original early 60s Jazz Basses. Unfortunately when I removed the pickup the other day to fit a preamp I broke the solder connection and now I earth it every time I touch the treble pot on my preamp (resulting in a nasty click) which I'm going to have to sort soon before it sends me nuts. I have the feeling that your strip must be there for just cosmetic reasons as you also have the wire coming from the control cavity to make contact with the bridge like a modern Jazz.
  11. Like John Hunt's I think it's solar powered too.
  12.
well i went to andertons today, and a mixed bag of a day really, i didnt like the ampeg pf500 and 1x15 cab, i tried the ashdown abm500 1x15 combo and it's sooo much louder (well to me anyway), another band member came with me, and he was instantly impressed to by the difference, it would add sooo much depth and low end to the music we play at the moment BUT then my application for finance was declined? so a bit gutted, but i know what to go for
I agree with your choice of Ashdown. I recommend you go for a head and cab as it allows you freedom to chop and change a bit. Buy secondhand if you can though as you'll usually get back what you paid.
  13.
hhmm maybe if its maple whats the profile and thickness of that neck like ? if i had the cash id get a custom lefty precision neck made in maple then blocked and bound
It's a lovely neck but It's a rosewood board unfortunately from one of these http://www.fender.com/en-GB/products/search.php?partno=0131800300
  14.
cheers for the info on mighty mite i been wondering about them. as much as i love my geddy jazz i cant get into the whole skinny neck thing
I'll swop my Fender Classic 60s Jazz neck for your Geddy Lee one? I loved my old Geddy's neck.
  15.
On a similar note does anyone knoe if it's possible to buy an after market three piece jazz/P neck from anywhere? Or at least one with Carbon fibre rods?
Like this one? This ebay seller takes basses to bits and sells the parts. This is where I bought my Fender Classic Jazz neck http://www.ebay.co.u...b#ht_1044wt_698 Lots of lovely stuff..........at expensive prices. Don't forget the import tax.
  16.
Last night I dreamed I bought this and put a set of model Js, a black scratch plate and the neck off my 51 RI on it.
Putting a baseball bat neck on a Geddy Lee is blasphemy! They have the most fantastically skinny necks Fender produce.
  17. An Ashdown EB 180 is a fantastic amp for a beginner. Cheap, reliable, light and LOUD! It has a compressor built in too. You can play at bedroom levels with it and at rock gig levels (and I have...with loud drummers). I own it's big brother now but I still take my EB out to smaller gigs and it sounds great! And the great thing is you can buy one secondhand for £100 probably from this very forum. 18. I took an ancient set of rotos out and put them on my Precision and they sound great. The older the better for that vintage sound.
  19. I like the bit where she sings 'You got me losing my mind' at 1.35 and she goes cross eyed.
  20.
Aye, that'll be right! Still no response to the neck plate or how I shold pay...........
That's because he's sold it to 5 other people as well. Be patient, I'm sure he'll get around to you eventually.
  21.
Naah, been pulled, according to the seller. He said he had some problems with his debit card!! He's offered it to me for £1800; you reckon I should go for it??
Bargain! I think you should meet him in a lonely layby in the middle of nowhere at 3am to hand over the money in cash.
  22. It's been disappeared......................was it all a dream?
  23.
Are the rosewood ones he sells tinted too? One of those is just what I'm after.
Yes!
  24. It's either been put on ebay by a 90 year old grandmother who found it in her attic and is totally genuine. Or It's some clueless thicko trying a cheap scam. You choose!
