Party band needed for charity gig, Leytonstone, London, 20/1/18
Mykesbass replied to Mickeyboro's topic in General Discussion
Michael, give me a call, would love to do this for you. We may call ourselves a Blues band, but very lively with bags of soul. PM me if you haven't got my number (hasn't changed). -
Didn't think of spec savers. What kind of money?
About £130/140.

Specsavers moulded. Perfectly balanced reduction, can hear everything, just much quieter. Only issue I have is the drop in volume feels like a drop in energy too. Just need to get used to it as I now have noticeable tinnitus.
Not at the rate they're dying off, Mike - off to Will Youatt's funeral tomorrow 😢
Ooh, sorry Michael, poor timing

Just made a nice easy sale to Alex, and he was great about my mix up on communication, not getting back to him for a few days. So sorry Alex, and thanks! Mike

An interesting development on this. My drummer and I went to see another Basschatter, Elias Mooseblaster's band a few weeks back, and both felt that, overall, the two bands were probably fairly close to each other in ability, but they had the edge in that the band completely owned their songs, something we put down to it being their own material, and not trying to put their own personality into someone else's work (our theory anyway). This really sealed it for us, and on Wednesday, the first time after holidays and other disruptions we have been able to get a full rehearsal, we broke the back of two new original songs, and it had exactly that element that was previously missing. All we have to do now is polish them up, and get some of our more interesting covers to have the same feel in time for our gig on 17th October at the 100 Club supporting Marcus Malone!

Dave Robinson of Stiff records would speed a lot of recording up. I've seen footage of Tracy Ullman saying how hard it was to keep up with the backing track to Breakaway.
Yeah, I agree. Occasionally they have things like this on the ‘One Show’. They did something similar with Pino and ‘That Intro’ (although pre recorded).
Those mini documentaries that Carrie Grant does every now and then? Yes, great little pieces.
The host is just awful. At the end, Marcus is not sure what to make of this guy and then the hosts gets emotional after his wonderful singing. Bizarre.
Artists have to get up to all sorts of weird stuff on the continent, but they get well looked after and it all helps put bums on seats. As for the host being awful, I actually thought it was pretty cool that he (or the production team) even considered having Miller as a featured guest, and to then do a whole piece explaining the bass's role to an audience of ordinary punters.

Compact amps with 2 ohm, or 2 x 4 ohm outputs - suggestions?
Mykesbass replied to lowregisterhead's topic in Amps and Cabs
The Carvin BX700 amp I have goes down to drive a 2 Ohm load. This is selected with a switch on the back of the amp from 4 Ohm loads. It is lightweight with 2 EQ sections (switchable) and a valve (switchable) in the pre-amp stage. I have mine for sale here on Basschat: Carvin BX700 Amp

Yup, there's even on for sale here on BC. Call me a snob, but I'm looking for something a bit more substantial...

Thanks, I'd already seen that listing, and although it would probably do the job, I'm looking for something a little more high-end. I'm either just very picky, or a terrible amp snob - you can decide! The truth is I know nothing about Carvin gear.
OK, as you asked, you're a snob Seriously, I'd have put the Carvin at least as high end as GK or Genz Benz. I bought mine after a/b testing against the Aguilar Tonehammer and felt the Carvin won hands down. I've got the 500w version, and although I now swap between this and a newly acquired Fender Pro 800 the Carvin's going nowhere. -
Remind her from what the strings used to be made

I thought overall it was worth a watch. In my book, the good - Beverley Knight, thought she was outstanding, James Morrison's version of Try a Little Tenderness, and Private Number. Not so good, Jools' presentation style (although he kept his playing to a minimum, and most of it fitted), Tom Jones first number lacked a bit of energy, and, the controversial one, I felt the bass was way too prominent in the mix . The ugly - that finale

If it is active doesn't that make it the deluxe version? If so, a Squier isn't going to be a big step up. If you want to go passive, the Entwistles are great for the money and then talk to Kiogon on here for one of his wiring kits. That should keep you happy until you want to found up to the £700+ price bracket (IMHO of course)!

NAD Fender Pro 800 Update - Played at 100 Club
Mykesbass replied to Mykesbass's topic in Amps and Cabs
Punch, power, clarity.
Exactly this. And yes, I think I am going to enjoy, thanks! -
I recently picked up (from a BC member, but from ebay) a lovely Traynor YBA 200. Great amp, but it didn't work out for me. All the wonderful things about valves (the mild overdrive, the overtones, the hugeness of the sound) just didn't suit my style of playing. I was needing a bit more clarity and definition. So, just before my recent holiday I swapped with AJ5string for his Fender Pro 800. Last night I finally got to try it out at rehearsal (with just the one cab - Purple Chilli 112) and it sounded amazing. Everything I was looking for - a big full sound, but also beautiful articulation of the notes. With the second cab it is going to be an absolute monster. I've been very happy with my Carvin BX500 and will be keeping it, but the Fender, to my ears, is something else, and I'm a very happy bass player

Funny (but positive this time) Rickenbacker video
Mykesbass replied to Cat Burrito's topic in General Discussion
After ranting Dave's video proved such a popular thread on here, I thought I'd share this as this guy made me laugh twice in this short video. I've not come across him before but he is certainly a character. I love the bass too.
Really love the final bridge pickup tone he gets, but no idea how you would use it. -
The band, called Euphony, haven't been gigging this year due to them all (that's now eleven of them if and when they can all make it) having other things to do in various parts of the country. They haven't played London or Brighton since last summer. But old farts were allowed, although I've had to pay like anyone else. If you're interested though, you can hear two EPs at Bandcamp, from 2013 as a six-piece group and 2014 as nine-piece group ... Mistakes EP - 2013 Outside In EP - 2014 ETjr and his muso mates did steal from my vinyl and cd collections but the thing is they were also listening to a massive variety of world music and European classical music now so easily available on the internet which is an echoed of the earlier comment about listening to everything.
Thanks Dave, will check those links out this evening. -
I've always found that a little bit intriguing; five voters have cast fourteen votes. Perfectly legitimate, of course (voting is not yet obligatory...), but it seems that, every month, someone decides that there are less than three pieces worthy of note. Maybe there's another explanation..? Dunno; just seems odd to me, that's all.
Sorry, 'twas I. I felt two stood out above all the others this month. Nothing to do with bad arithmetic.

Wow, love it. Great colour. Jon is an amazing builder, still plotting how I can commission a second build from him one day!
Lots of influence from Dub in Drum 'n' Bass and related genres and sub-genres. ETjr plays in a 'Gypsy Dub' band.
Sounds great - is he local to you, do they gig? Would an old fart like me get in to one of their gigs?! -
I'm sure Luke won't mind a little deviation! I agree with you, all that switching has had to be thought through. At least it can't be accused of being style over substance!!
'Uncle, I want to play bass, who should I listen to?' 'Well, I could certainly make plenty of suggestions, but who have you been listening to that has made you want to play bass?' 'I like Drum 'n' Bass ' 'Well, you'll want to learn to sample and to use a synth, as well as pickup bass guitar and/or double bass, but let's ask your cousin, who is a Drum 'n' Bass promoter as well as a musician ..... ' '..... apparently he's got a long list of stuff for you but he says Skream's Dutch Flowerz is all you need to know in four minutes.' Or is Basschat just too rockist for this stuff?
I liked that - would have preferred something else to happen, but was like an updated dub.
If that's all ET jr. needs to know, then he may be asking the wrong questions ...
Your avatar likes it Jack - I swear it was dancing in time
