1. Billy Sheehan's Yamaha is probably one of very few genuine signature models, in that it was developed to his spec, and he had proper input into making something that was different. The Lemmy carved Ric and Jaco's de-fret are the only other two that come to mind. Sure there are more, but not as many as Fender manage to market!!
2. Did seem a bit crazy - well done for nabbing it! Still going to leave it at the lower price though - bargain anyone?!
3. That would be one eye...
4. Looking at the price one just went for on Facebook I may have set the price a little high, so now reduced to £90.
5. I've only got one - is that a "Norman"?
6. I'm probably heading a bit in the opposite direction. Always liked a lot of Jazz - big band being a bit of a favourite, and one of my absolute favourite pieces of music is Mozart's Grand Mass in Cm. But I'm now listening to bands like Rival Sons and Temperance Movement as that's the way my band is going. I've also been a major contributor to the Disco Faves thread, and not afraid of admitting to a few "guilty pleasures". So as others have said, enjoy whatever floats your boat!
7. Yes, great tune. Mathis and in a similar vein, Lou Rawls, had one foot in MoR and one in a much cooler camp!
8. And another from 6 Music at the weekend - again, so much of this is in the arrangement (including a couple of bars of French Horn)?
9. Another beaut thanks to 6 Music this morning, a lesser known, but fabulous Chic track.
10. Hi Roman, Will PM you - looking for recording a 5 piece in January on a paid for basis.
11. If Mikeycrikey doesn't take it I will.
12. Great condition - velcro on the base, only gigged a handful of times. Boxed. Will post pics at the weekend. Great piece of kit, but I don't DI, and carry a spare amp, so don't need half of this! Will consider a part trade on an MXR M85 or EHX Soul Food with cash coming my way.
13. Didn't Wilko Johnson make his album thinking his time was up? Nice twist in the tale for him, surviving to enjoy the success!
14. Mudpie in Brighton doesn't have a lot of basses, but does get the occasional gem. Worth liking the Facebook page.
15. Singer 53, drummer 57, me 53, guitarist 18, other singer also 18. We've gone from being a blues band (playing a very broad interpretation of blues covers) to writing our own blues/rock material - think Temperance Movement, Rival Sons etc. The great thing about music now is that the generation gap has gone. These bands are playing stuff the band's of our youth were playing. Yes, no fame or fortune in the offing, but we are starting to get some interesting gig offers. Do it. Don't let age be the barrier.
16. I'd add the Guild Starfire to the list.
17. Having played a couple of anniversaries and (older) birthday parties in a rockier, Americana(ish) band because the couple or birthday person really loved us I'd advise caution, as there is a reason why Bruno Mars cheesy wedding bands are so popular - they appeal to the vast majority. The only other option would be something like a full on themed band (sorry themed probably a bad choice of word but works in the wedding context), so Ska could work really well, especially if they throw in some really well known stuff - Madness, Desmond Dekker. Other genres - I've seen a three piece Rockabilly outfit go down an absolute treat at a printer's Christmas party, ceilidh bands can often work if they have a great caller, or 40's RnB.
18.
I Googled "Stas Pokatilo" ....he must be a well known Luthier and Master builder...
He has 31 likes on Facebook...
19.
Back then, arranging was very much the name of the game in Disco, especially the Philly type style.
^ This. Listen to those fiddles getting a thorough workout at around 2.30!! And there has to be 60+ musicians on this recording - bass trombones, French horns, the works.
20.
From the OED ... popular or jazz music.
Mutually exclusive of course...
21. Zombie Thread time - blame Huey Morgan for playing this on 6 Music this morning - what a corker! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fd0dbn27cY
22.
Ooh Komedia. Not a bad venue, what date? Cheers Geoff
25th January supporting The Brew.
23.
I've only heard good things about the new range of Fender amps. Need to try one out i think. Dave
Afraid this one is only new to me - it is old and very heavy! I did have a pair of the new Rumble 112 cabs - they were very good for the money. Only got rid of them as I previously had a single Purple Chili 12 and always wanted a pair, so when some came up on here I sold the Fenders on.
24. Got to use this on Tuesday night at the 100 Club. We were supporting Marcus Malone (who had the charming Roger Inniss on bass - we had a bit of a Shuker love-in), so got to play at a much louder volume than I am used to. Wow, this thing delivers. Got a great sound out of it straight away, a lovely full thump, super warm, yet with great definition. I've never played the Carvin at this sort of volume - I'll try it the next time we do a bigger gig (Komedia, Brighton in January), but I think I've found a new favourite!
25. 100 Club last night. Wasn't keen to do the "sell 40 tickets & get a couple of £ back" concept, but the night was really positive. Made some good new friends, promoter likes us, and it was great playing in an iconic venue with full payment and a great soundman.
