1.
we found a great country singer name from a few missing letters from the sign on the roof of the take-away chicken shop Charco l hickens ONE day I'm gonna use it
There's a pub near Bristol Airport called the Airport Tavern. It's never been terribly well-presented, but at one time it looked near derelict and a whole bunch of the letters spelling out its name had fallen off the front, turning 'AIRPORT TAVERN' into '..R.O.T ..VERN'. Somehow it seemed very fitting and I have adopted the word 'rotvern' as a description for any establishment that appears dodgy or unkempt; e.g. "there's no way I'm playing there, it's a complete rotvern" or "the King's Arms used to be nice but it's gone a bit a rotvern since that new landlord moved in".
2. My big soul band does Queen's 'Don't Stop Me Now'; the horn section play the guitar solo it really works and always goes down well.
3. The omnibus edition of 'Eddie Izzard: Believe Me' on the Beeb iPlayer. Funny & v.moving. Superb radio.
4. Some of my favourite TV themes: Grandstand Taxi ('Angela' by Bob James) Hill Street Blues St Elsewhere (Lee Ritenour & Dave Grusin) Shoestring and of course without question the greatest TV theme tune of all time... . Not all necessarily great basslines, but wonderful pieces of music. Great thread BTW.
5. I bought a Novation K-Station recently and it's brilliant. Big phat pharty sounds and 70s-soundalike synthy goodness. And programmable memories. I still regret selling my old Roland SH-09 back in the day, but practically speaking the K is the superior instrument in every way.
6. Is no headless. The octave strings are tuned at the body end, but the bass strings aren't. Still looks like fun though and yes I'd love to try it. I've often thought it'd be nice to have an 8/10 string to muck about with.
7. Feeling sleepy? Here y'go.
8.
Oasis were all about the raw attitude, back in the day. I knew guys that idolised that sort of thing. I watched a Youtube video shot back in the day, called something optimistic like "Liam Gallagher beats up photographers". Basically Liam is prancing around outside a hotel doing that stupid Manc Walk, and occasionally Manc Walks up to a photographer and gives him aggro. Lots of 'come on then!' safe in the knowledge that he has huge big bastards paid handsomely to make sure he comes to no harm. But back in the '90s before ISIS beheading videos and endless online pornography this sort of scene was probably risky and daring; a rock 'n' roller living on the edge! The working man fighting back! Yawn. Now that Liam is old it is just a bit embarrassing and, with the benefit of hindsight, he seems more like an antisocial eccentric than anything else.
Sums it/him up nicely.
9.
But we'd love to know if Basschat has been entirely responsible for any other marriage in the past or if anyone's planning to follow our path!
Well, dood keeps turning me down but I live in hope.
10.
Proud to be stout!
I have a friend who thinks he might be stout...
Quite, it's the usual muso whining ... Get over yourselves.
Yes, how dare you have an opinion. You should all be ashamed of yourselves.
11. I use a Magna-Cart. Yes, one of the ones with the folding-in wheels. It happily takes my cab, amp rack case and Pod bag, which is all I need it to do.
12.
Been there. Unfortunately an unstable drummer upsets the whole band.
Yup, been there too. Played with such a chap in a pub-rock band many years ago. Luckily he was a nice guy with a realistic outlook: he knew full well that he was fairly dreadful, so he found us a great replacement and sacked himself.
13. Predictable "slap is soooo 1980s" comment incoming in 5... 4... 3...
14.
"If you finish a solo in a note that sounds bad then simply slide it up or down half tone and you'll land on a right note." -
Never mind solos, I've played entire songs like that
15.
London, Manchester, Bristol and Leeds is not a UK tour. It's some dates in England.
At least he's coming here. Mike Stern's last couple of 'European' Tours haven't come within 500 miles of the UK, which is bloody annoying because he's my favourite guitarist. Stu Hamm's last 'European' tour was similarly anglophobic.
16. I reckon this is a must-see
17. I have tiny, silliy little fingers. A P neck is too fat for me. I can't speak for the 4 string Sires, but the 5 neck is perfect for me.
18.
Mucho sol aqui cada dia desde martes, Iremos a cenar en el pueblo ahora ¡gracias!
Heth eth eth eth eth, sminki pinki Chris Waddle.
19. You soulless old buggers (pot, kettle etc)
20. My only problem with the preamp is the sheer amount of cut/boost (specifically boost) on the bass control. The tiniest little movement plays havoc with your tone, there's far too much available. I'm half tempted to disconnect the pot and just solder a fixed resistor of the right value in its place. Apart from that, I love everything about it.
21. There's a big saving on the P7 Alder 5-string tobacco sunburst. £517 at Thomann, but £87 cheaper at Anderton. Oh god. I can hear my credit card screaming.
22. The best one I ever had was during a gig with my old jazz-fusion trio at a jazz venue in Bristol. We had just finished a John Scofield tune and were about to launch into another instrumental epic when this pissed student-type came up to me. "Do you do Iron Man by Black Sabbath?" he asked. I looked at him incredulously. "Do we sound like the sort of band that does Iron Man by Black Sabbath?" I replied with a grin. We launched into the aforementioned instrumental epic, at the end of which there he was again. "Do you know Iron Man by Black Sabbath?" he asked. "No we bloody don't" I replied somewhat testily. I wandered away from him to try to signal that the exchange was definitely over and we launched into a Brand X tune. At the end, yup, there he was again. "Why won't you play Iron Man?" he demanded. I gave him my very best Paddington Bear Stare. "Oh come on, you must know it!" he said. "Look mate," I said in a firm this-conversation-is-over tone, "just f*** off eh?". (I wouldn't normally tell a punter to sex-&-travel, but this gimboid was seriously getting on my toot.) Thankfully, he got the message and f***ed off.
23.
Bang for the buck they sound really good. Has anyone done any modifications on them yet
I've done a couple, but they're purely hardware. Hipshot tuners in place of the stock ones (much smoother action, plus they shaved half a pound off the weight), and Hipshot string retainers to replace the stock bar-type.
