1. I think of it like wearing a helmet when on the bike or a seat belt in the car - it that important! Once you try out ear plug you'll realise just how much of an improvement they can make to sound quality and your enjoyment of a gig. Had to leave the Belini gig a few weeks ago as the vocals were very shrill - can't believe I left home without the plugs - i normally keep two or twee sets around the flat and practice room. I'll keep an eye on amazon for any discounts and them snap up a spare pair - in the bass case, my gig bag with pedals etc at home so there should always be a pair close by.
2. That looks mega. I'd happily be seen in public with that ginger beast *Disclaimer* I find the hot chicks with red hair really attractive
here you go took me a few seconds to find in google http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:dvWarZd...15f.jpg&t=1
3. I played through a 215 speaker last night and really enjoyed the sound. Plus it was my first ever 5 string gig and Um certainly interested in giving some 15's a go!
4. Picked up a P5 from James and it was a delight to do the deal. Hassle free and a nice bloke. BAss was well packed and hand delivered. Now thats service Buy with complete confidence.
5. Hey Harry Welcome and Im guessing it was you bought the Aggie gear from via the bay. I did a deal recently with Harry via ebay Great guy and good comm's. Might be new here but defo reliable.
6. Hey just saw this post. I use a valve drive along with a Fulltone Bass Drive. The Valve Drive has two settings: vintage and modern. The vintage tone is maybe not what you may expect in that you still hear your bass sound but with this undertone of dirt. I think its got to do with the way the pedal is designed and how it routes the signal negative feedback loop or some wonderful jargon like that. Its a great sound and really adds fullness to your basic tone. The modern sound is more errm modern! Its more focused and tight and will certainly help you cut through in a live mix. I dont use this pedal for major high gain and I will say that the manual suggested settings didn't work for me at all. I just set if flat ad then moved the controls until it sounded right for what I wanted it to do. The valve drive is a great pedal for adding dimension to the sound, not just dirt - in that context I use it for adding oomph to certain parts of songs and have it set up to give some grit to the tone along with a bit of a boost to the lows. I normally kick it in when the bass line need to stand out a little more but I have to same I'm always tempted to leave it on all the time In conjunction with a second dirt box it can give a huge bass sound and although expensive I've recently sold my pre amp and use the valve drive along with a DB924 and bass drive into my power amp and it sounds great. Its really handy to be able to carry valve tone in your gig bag and if the amp at your next gig has tha ability to bypass its tone stack you have a valve rig at every show. 7. I've got to move on some stuff on as the end of the year approaches so up for grabs is my Vintage Modified P bass. The spec is below: Model Name Vintage Modified Precision Bass - Olympic White Body Agathis Neck Maple, C-Shape, Fingerboard Rosewood, 9.5” Radius (241 mm) No. of Frets 20 Medium Jumbo Bridge Standard 4-Saddle Pickguard 3-Ply Black/White/Black Scale Length 34” (864 mm) Width at Nut 1.625” (41.3 mm) The bass plays really nice and is ideally suited to those who favour a Jazz neck profile. Its slim and fast and my band mates prefer the feel of this to my USA P bass (but I love that neck profile Im more P than J myself) I've recently rewired the Squire with new, quality wire, fitted it with CTS pots and I took the p/u from my '08 P bass (which I replaced with a Nordstrand NP4)and whacked that in there too to complete the package. Finally I added a new Sprague 'orange drop' cap to replace the little lentil sized thing that was originally in there. The USA p/u sounds great and is slightly hotter than the NP4 - a great P sound with thump and clarity depending on the tone knob position which now sounds great through the whole range of it taper from bright and upfront to deep and thumpy. I'm asking for £225 which is a great deal but do feel free to make offers close to that. Im not after any trades as I have some stuff incoming that I need to gather cash for. Im happy to split the P+P with the buyer should that be a deal breaker! Ideally this bass would be great as a 'beginner+' bass - cheaper than a MIM and better feeling and sounding- but wouls equally be at home in the arsenal of the regular gigging player due to it's light weight, great tone and playability. I have a 4 string I love to play and a 5 due any day now so I need to sadly let this one go. Get in touch and I'll get pic's up tomorrow. Im happy to answer any other questions via PM. Cheers
8. Got a little noise box which was a very quick and trouble free transaction. Cheers and looking forward to creating some sonic mayhem G

Ordered this from Thomann and they had a few months wait so I cancelled the order - Thomann decided to go ahead and charge me and post this anyway. I now have two. I'd send it back but thought it would be easier to move on here. Im after the standard UK price £24.99 is what Im finding. I'll do it for that including postage. PM if interested. Cheers
11. Thanks folks I'll go hunt one down this week with a bit more confidence thanks to your collective input!
12. My old guitar player had one - a lot of bass response present and it was designed to give that tight low end rhythm for guitar. Might be too bass heavy for the 4 and 5 stringers but he wouldn't let me try it. However Damage Control gear is solid and they do a range of dirt boxes with varying degrees of grind but have been discontinued now. Worth checking them out if you can find them.
13. I was thinking the same myself Amended in light of your well spotted error.
14. Been informed its a light poly finish not nitro - same principle applies - a lighter layer for improved resonance.
15. Having had a disaster last night when the input jack of my Squire decided that it wasn't feeling like doing anything remotely what it's supposed to I'm gonna go get a soldering iron - a guy I know did a full rewire on this bass recently but didn't change the input jack as I had thought (and asked) - so I'm gonna do it myself and be safe in the knowledge if it screws up I've only myself to blame. Just wanted a heads up on a recommended decent iron and a pointer at some decent solder. I know Maplins and Ebay are full of these and I may even construct a varitone box once I get up to speed with the soldering. Thanks in advance folks.
16. For sale is an 08 USA P bass I can't really justify having more than one 4 string and my squire (which now has the original p/u from this) is probably adequate for my actual ability and I'm not kidding OK so the blurb - this is a USA 08 P Bass with the updated high mass bridge and nitro finish. I've added a Nordstrand NP4 which gives it a more of the vintage 'hollow grind' vibe which is what I was after in the tone of the bass - the new USA p/u's was a little hot for that sound IMHO but still a great tone. The bass comes with the excellent SKB Fender hard shell which is a great design for keeping the old girl safe. Overall the bass plays realy nice with a neck profile that feels familiar and inviting - satin finished which feels smooth and not sticky in the hand after longer sets. The maple neck has a lovely, aged tint to it and those ever so desirable rolled edges on the finger board give it a played in, comfortable as old slippers vibe. I was instantly at home on this bass and it has a some character, it's a Fender and carries on that tradition of classic, big tone. Im not a maple guy but this neck changed my opinion - it solid, stable and plays like a dream. The bass is available to try in Edinburgh. There are some very slight marks as you would expect from a bass that has been played pretty much daily but nitro finishes are thinner than lacquer which lets the wood resonate more for a far greater tone and sustain but at greater risk of 'war wounds'. The bass is by no means a 'relic' but does have some slight scratches but nothing major - its all pretty superficial. I've captured a dent in the finish in one of the photos and there is nothing else as visible as this. With the Nordstrand p/u upgrade (£100 new) I'll be looking for £770, which I may wiggle very slightly on, via bank transfer (which is saving a few hundred on the new price). I just lost money thanks to paypal and their fee's on a sale a few days ago so reluctant to go down that avenue but do please check my feedback thread as I'm not out to scam.. Oh and the bass has just had a new set of DR High Beams fitted about 5 weeks ago! Shipping will be paid by the buyer and I'm happy to take care of the details via courier on your behalf. If you prefer a black scratch plate I can send it instead as the tort would look nice on my oly white squire Thanks for looking and PM for details
17. Its all in the title lads Get in early and come over and say hello and berate me on my tone after We're on first strange considering we're the best band on the bill See y'all there
18. Steve Miller looks like someone made a Steve Miller Mii Cee-Lo's bass player would get it...it being (insert witty response here) Janelle Monae is shaking like a (insert witty response here) My work here is done. I'm off to get more wine!
19. Does it really make that much of adifference to the tone? I understand the fact that dropping £1000+ there is no excuse ( there shouldn't be this problem on any bass for that matter if they are CNC'd once over a few hundred quid) but id the impact tonal or merely cosmetic. I'll be sure and bounce this over to the Lakland LOG site and see what they think. PS the teal green is a limited edition colour only available this yaar in a handful of numbers for each skyline model.

21. Hello Basschat!! JPA announced for this Friday, 8th Oct, at Frankensteins new band night in Edinburgh. Doors at 7.30 I think. Still waiting on confirmation!
22. The only thing I'd add is be sure and set the input source correctly so can can hear your bass in both speakers/headphones. I was a total noob and couldn't get to grips with not being able to hear 'stereo'. I figured it out eventually Good luck with your new set up
23. I had the pleasure of holding this bass a few years ago as a guitar store in Belfast, Guitar Emporium, had been tasked with creating a mock up of this bass for the statue of Phil on Harry Street - it was my old '78 P bass they used which was then cased in bronze and fitted to the statue. I'm very proud of this fact
24. Hey there It's important to remember that the tone control on any bass is effectively a roll off control. Its like turning a tap at your sink - when your tone control is turned all the way up your signal is going straight out of the bass to your amp and 'not' affecting the tone just like if your tap was turned on. However the tap itself naturally has an effect on the flow of the water due to it's size, its diameter and just simply by virtue of it being there. If you didn't have the tap connected you might get a different flow of water, maybe a fast uncontrolled stream or jet of water and certainly one you had no control over. Likewise with cap's - without one you could expect a tone that was 'hot', and uncontrollable in the sense that it wasn't connected to a control knob. Remember just by having cap's in your circuit they will have an effect to your tone. Therefore its natural to think that the size of the cap then determines how much tone gets through to your amp although when you tone knob is wide open you 'shouldn't' hear any difference to your tone. If your after the Steve Harris tone I'm sure there is much info and spec sheets outlining his wiring preference, caps used etc. If its any consolation..... I just recently changed the cap in my USA P Bass to a paper in oil cap, a 0.1uF and for my needs its a really great cap. It just sounds good to my ears - I normally use it to tame a little top end off my round wound strings. Someone mentioned that the tone know is a throwback to a bygone age now that amps, pedals and multi FX are so complex and that is a valid point. However for me and my style I can get the tonal variety right at my fingertips with a little tweak of the tone control. I enjoy the feel and tone of flatwounds but they don't always suit the songs I play in the band. The tone control and the 0.1uF allows me to get the nice bassy tone I like plus with the twist of the control can give more definition with the tone wide open. I have a spare paper in oil cap (its a brute) but should fit into your control cavity if you want to try it out? Hit me with a PM and I'll send it to ya if you like.
25. Sorry the pic's have appeared side ways amd one is tiny I'll see if I can enlarge it
