  1. It's all about getting the right amp into the right cab sound in the box. A friend of mine gigs using units like this, and a POD exclusively, and it's all about the right cab IRs, that said he always has a Two Notes C.A.B pedal just incase and can by pass the IR's in the box. For recording these can sound incredible,
  2. Maybe look at the MXR 10 band EQ? Not exactly cheap but has a cut at 62.5Hz?
  3. All about string tension. Currently have a 34" scale 4 string tuned to Drop E/Drop Eb (one octave below normal E on a 4 string) and there have been talks (which I've hushed but they keep coming back!) of finding the brown note of low C#... I find the lower you go, the more you need to work on it. And shape your tone to match, cutting the excessive low lows and dialling in the right mids to still stay articulate. For reference I use between a .100 and a .110 for a standard E on a 4 string (.110 is my preferred in standard tuning), with a .130/.135 for a low B and in Drop A use a .140. For A standard I like .140/ for the A and .115 for the D.
  4. Only just heard, absolutely gutting. Jack was a huge influence on me, I'm still striving for that fat neck coil tone and to maybe one day be able to sing a scratch as well as him. Sad times indeed. Rest In Peace Jack Bruce.

Used HA's a lot and if they are provided back line I'm always happy, and there is just something about the straight up and solid, chunky tone of the LH amps. Never used a Kilo but I imagine it's a kind of blend of the two. Will certainly be keeping an eye on this!

[/quote] Just a ruler or tape measure measuring the centre of one string to the next, Though 11.7mm doesn't sound impossible so could be around right. Very tight though! My BTB676 has 17mm spacing which I love! Seriously fighting GAS for one of things with a low F#!

  9. I'd say Roscoe but that's pushing your price limit (by which I mean it's over £500 unless you find a great second hand deal!) Other than that I'd say in terms of the 6er world I'd vote for an Ibanez SR if you can get on with the tighter spacing (seems a tad marmite, some 4+ stringers seem to love smaller spacing, some love it wider. Decent prices, tend to hold value reasonably, decent mod options and light thanks to the smaller bodies!

The original MB's people had a few issues with, that wasn't uncommon to hear, but they have overhauled production and redesigned/updated the line and amps since and haven't heard any real horror stories since they have and it seems GK have always been on hand to help. I've always had good service from GK, and great service since one of my friends became an endorsee haha!
  12. I did a show with a guy who had one that he'd rehoused and revalved and the think actually sounded really good, definitely SVT Classic alike, less thick but more toppy and a tad less middy. Though after his tinkering and settings I'm not sure if that was the amp for what he'd done to it. I've used a fair few Bugera guitar amps and they are actually not bad at all, definitely brings the tone in a much cheaper package. For groups who use lots of amps (like the last band I played geetar in and my current new band on bass) it was really nice. Ended up using a 6260 and a TriRec together with Marshall Cabs and for £700 rather than the £3k those heads they are based on would run you it was certainly not far from those tones, a bit less character and life but pretty darn close with the way we used them (nice and tight and thick and fat). Also used a 1960 and it sounds really like a Plexi. I see a decent amount of love for the BVP5500 as an SVT-3 clone. Would absolutely love to hear one of these! Never heard any other Bugera Bass gear in the flesh, obviously there are the usual warnings of reliability, but hey, worth a punt right?

  15. In a couple songs I use my Bass xtender mid song (pedal riffs, chords etc based in D and in E) Personally love the growl of a regular E tuned down to D! That said I like my E string as a .110 on 34" and .105 on 35" I do agree it's not always needed to match the guitars tuning, case in point, my gig tonight, one song in Drop D I play in B standard (though I did tune the E down to D for some fun stuff at the end haha!) as the bass part can all be played in standard tuning very easily. On the other hand, guys like Jon Stockman of Karivool sort of match guitar tunings to allow them to do stuff not possible in standard tuning. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUmARJ0o6Hw For example, has to be in drop B (He plays a six string in Drop B with an extra high string and the top string tuned to C I believe, met the guys a few time as my cousin went to school with them in 'straya) as the harmonics as natural and harmonic chord figures aren't possible in B standard. I've covered this live in standard tuning (once just playing the notes not as harmonics) and once doing all the harmonics as artificial harmonics, but it just didn't sound great and then you can't do the chordal parts anyway. First example that came to mind but there are more (many of them Karnivool haha!)

Tends to happen from being good, and having good shows worth coming to see, so the two kind of go hand on hand (almost 19, gigging for 6 years now) We've played shows to literally two people and usually play to 100 or but it's not uncommon for it to be next to no one, first show in a while tonight will be anywhere between 30 and 150 depending (since we're now one first, boo!) But the biggest show I've done was 1200 odd, excluding stand mini festivals etc We once played this crazy vegan hippie bar in the middle of no where, impossible to find, place usually sells out but the night we played there was only 1 person and the bar staff, but we still had a good time. Loving to play and loving to play live I find is a big part of it, and it's all about energy. The crowd gets excited over energy you feed them, and vice versa, you feed them so they feed you. I think just focusing on having a good time, and being aware the crowd should be having one too and it will all kind of fall into place. Just my 2p anyway!

  21. If you want that classic original Fender sound Bare Knuckle is the only option that will 100% nail the sound in my experience!
  22. One of my bands used to play YYZ at the end of our show in an "introducing the band" type deal. Haven't listened to the track (or Moving pictures) in ages. This thread inspired me to play it again, man is it a work out! We used to play it maybe 15-20 BPM faster than the original too. Safe to say my isolated bass track for it wouldn't always be pretty haha!
  23. Really interested in these, but at over £1k definitely won't be checking one out! Really wanting to move over to Ashdown but looks like I'm going with the GK route. Thinking a combo is the way to go as I'm moving to the middle of a city and my budget can't really stretch to Head/cab. Will certainly be watching these though!

Counter argument though, depending on who what where when, drop tuning on the 6 may be best. 9/10 on the 6 I learn stuff in B standard, it's just easier and makes more sense, (once you get the hang of it!) but look at Karnivool, some of that stuff isn't possible on a regular 6, and I found myself tuning to Drop B for an album cycle tour as some of the chords, breakdown riffs and harmonics etc simply weren't possible in standard tuning. Speaking of Low F# that bass is now tuned to drop E
