1. The kind of royal blood fake guitar sound, is pretty much achievable by POG octave up into Fuzz, into a clean channel of an amp (or mild OD, depending on taste, or full bore distortion if you want an ultra gainy soupy feedback monster! All personal preference. I like a bit of each!) Layering distortions/gain can be pretty tricky to get everything to play together nicely. If you're going octave up all the time, I'd try Pog -> Multi Fx -> Zvex. -> clean amp, (or mild OD) for the RB-ish sound, or how I'd do it anyway (experiment!) Though if you're using distortion/drive on the FX, the Zvex AND the amp, you're basically just subtracting gain/compression with each one you toggle off, hence using the Zvex for the most of the gurgle, and fuzz, the the Multi FX for any cleaner grit, and grind as a bass tone. Then you could footswitch the amp clean/dirty (I imagine?) then you could have that for those leady parts, or massive gain sections. Hope any of that made sense, or helped!
2.
ive got one underneath my board, its there as security, i use a lot of octaves and bass heavy fuzzes and it can go a bit crazy so for that it just stops the cab and amp trying to reproduce sounds it just cant! theres no obvious loss of low end at all either. andy
I'm really curious about these, as I really notice on EQ's with 20-30Hz controls when they are wound down, but they aren't designed to do exactly what the thumpinator does. I'd love to hear an A/B and try one myself, curious as to how it sounds recorded too. Does seem to be a real cab saver for us sub pumpers though!
3. These are built/designed by WJS/Wunjo Guitars here in Glasgow, Billy did some work on my Ibanez that was badly damaged, and he did it for a very fair fee, with a very quick turn around, his work shop is round the corner, so I've seen this bass in the flesh. Not sure for me, but Billy is a good guy!
4. Prometeus would be the only brand mentioned who could fit into your budget, and even then with transport costs/import it would likely take you out of your stated maximum, and that would be with no extra cost options pretty much! May I ask why you're looking into a custom 6 string? Nice to see another Jean Baudin fan on here, Binky, another user on BC used to own the famous Pac-9 bass, and I've met Jean a few times, awesome guy!
5.
Some blithering buffoon rambling on about one here: http://www.iguitarma...bass_reviewmp4/
Great review as always Dan, and may I say, what beautiful playing too!
6. The Nexus range a really under rated on the wider scale in my opinion. Does a little bit of everything, big, old school, mega sound, but with all the finishes of a modern amp design/construction. Plus the cabs are a very nice weight too, girthy, but with clarity.
7. A weighted strap, lighter tunes, OR the secret trick, of putting some adhesive tire weights in the control cavity
8. The new Darkglass compressor looks interesting, can't wait to see more from it/the price.
9. Been very interested in these, so thanks for the post! Been really looking to get into the world of compression, though just need to try a bunch, though I know vaguely what I want. Have tried a Cali was really, really impressed. May get the MXR bass comp as an all ways on, though I had a similar experience to you, where I felt it was blunting the tone, but maybe I can live with that live till I get used to it... (wouldn't be ideal!) I'd love a bass specific (or guitar/bass specific) Multi band compressor. I'm also hunting for a nice compressor for use on guitar, since I actually quite like a tiny bit on guitars, especially to keep big chugs from going overboard, and balancing out cleans. The new Keeley Pro does seem like it may be the answer to both!
10. There is a scottish custom pedal group who make a stonking OC-2 clone, but for the life of me can't remember what they or it is called... Will post back if I ever remember! EDIT: GojiraFX, that's them!
11. TC Hall of Fame, thing sounds INCREDIBLE, and you can make your own patches. Absolutely adore mine. Since you can tweak so much, the Mini one is a good option too, as you lose the pedal tweaking, but you have all the same parameters. I have Two HoFs and Two Minis (different uses etc) And One Flashback and three minis and the flash only loses the mode select, so since I use all my own patches it's perfect! The Neunaber Wet Reverb is my tied favourite. Look it up and listen, it's absolutely gorgeous. Everything from warm lush thick verb, to hollow cavey sounds, and syrupy or shimmer, all done beautifully. Love it!
12. You could just stick to the Zon, and save your pennies if you're liking the sound The current Warwick prices (always a cycle isn't it with Warwicks more than anything!?) make me VERY tempted to get one. Especially as the Yamaha TRBs are basically non existent any more!
13. As long as the DI IS actually built to sound clean, then yes, otherwise it will be coloured. I do this all the time in an identical chain
14. Definitely a neat little shootout! Listening over and over, the main things I've reaffirmed. Listening with ears, not my mind, and I really love P-basses
15. What's the neck like/dimensions? (roughly!) So, so very tempted by this...
16. Could do with more original signal, or more gain on the "guitar" channel for my tastes, though it entirely depends on what you're trying to achieve! Great tones though. Clips sound beastly. Love the grunt and chunk in the bass tone! I have a stupidly complicated set up which I so, so very rarely use, but when arranged, allows me to loop and put affects on each loop separately, and I do it to be able to loop a part only in one signal chain, so I can loop a bass riff, then guitar over it, or (as I do more often in the band setting) loop the guitar part, play a different bass part under, or loop that too and add additional guitar parts above. Also, loving all the Maiden
17.
Not everyone who plays a signature bass does so because of the name on the headstock.
+1000
18.
The title of this thread led me to think this was going to be a Haydn vs. Boulez dust-up. Ah well.
Funnily enough, I'm doing a paper on Haydn and Boulez comparisions haha! Later romantic stuff (like much of the American stuff, Barber, Moore etc) is my favourite, so effortlessly beautiful. Barber had a way with melody. Bartok is a love hate relationship. Fascinating music, and dissecting it for harmony classes makes me hate it, but love it even more. Bach for me though is the life blood of music. Spent much of my mid teens learning, and playing a new Bach piece a day. Should really get back into that habit actually! I'm hoping to 'major' in composition in Uni after next year, but I have distinct lack of natural talent, but hoping my composition classes next year give me the kick up the arse I need! Discovered Messiaen at university, the quartet for the end of time is hauntingly beautiful. As a Bass trombone player, I have great love for Tchaikovsky! Ralph Vaugh Williams and Felix Mendelssohn have been my "go to" composers for relaxing recently. (The Sea Symphony and Paulus (St. Paul) specifically!).
19.
Is 13th Note still going? Or is it under a new name now? Many years ago I had a few drinks in the Cat Hoose when Motorhead were in, after they'd last played the Barrowlands.
Yep! Has a few problems from time to time. Playing the note on the 30th next month!
20.
Ref: lines. Not necessary. You can't see them most of the time and, if you are reading charts or watching for cues, you are screwed. Muscle memory is the skill you need to acquire, not 20:20 vision.
And a decent ear! You learn pretty fast. I was thrown in at the deep end for fretless, and you pick it up faster than you'd think Found playing 5 strings harder! Plenty of interval and octave exercises etc to help you learn. Steve Bailey has loads of examples and exercises, found them super useful!
21.
A really really cheap option is a prodipe TT1 Chinese condenser that costs stupidly little sounds awesome on Toms will also do well on bass. Sounds like a Senn 421, has a big proximity bump though.
As in this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/PRODIPE-LUDOVIC-microphones-Handheld-Dynamic/dp/B0038VXUDW ? Looking for cheap Tom mic you see haha! the AKG P2 is great too. I tend to use a couple mics on a bass cab in general, blended with DI, but straight to Desk for me isn't the best since I use plenty of layers of distortion and it can sound a bit sharp without a cab simulator or such in there. (Though that's pretty rare. Often I do 1 mic, 1 DI feed, in the studio it's usually more of the both hah!)
22. +1 on all the Heil PR-40 comments! Also a HUGE fan of the Audio Technica ATM250DE and AE2500. Use them on Kicks 99.9% too as they are beefy, versatile and smooth. I too am a fan of the condenser on a bass cab sound, just not ideal live!
23. Not used any of the bass stuff, but the SVT 3 clone seemed reasonably well liked, and actually having used a fair amount of Bugera guitar stuff, especially the more recent stuff, had lots of bang for buck!
24. The Yamaha RBXA basses are stupidly light, slim necks and pack a superb punch. I'd say it's a matter of grind and practise. Bass is an endurance, full contact sport! My 4 string is my go to as it just feels better, but my 6 gets used at least 60% more, and I can do 90% of the things I can on the 4, but really no reason it shouldn't be more like 99%! Neck profiles etc factoring for the last part, such as certain moves, and my 6er being an inch longer scale, so down low, fast runs are a real work out, but I love it!
25. Without any excess noise, not too loud, but it really varies bass to bass. My yam and P-bass is much louder unplugged. I often practise unplugged, I prefer it for technique, as fretboard clank and all the right hand clicks and clacks really annoy me, especially as a firmer rock/metal player. Pick playing is notably louder than finger style,
