The Short Scale Bass Appreciation Society!
Teyeplayer replied to Baloney Balderdash's topic in Bass Guitars
I’m in the ‘early’ stages of rediscovering bass having had a cheap knock-of eb3 copy that I purchased (and gigged) for £60 about 30 years ago. In due course I moved onto guitar and bass fell by the wayside until I picked up a lovely precision bass a couple of years ago. Something wasn’t quite the same and I have gradually pieced together that as good as the precision is, it’s long scale. Since then a Hofner ignition Beatles bass has been added which is fantastic for the price, and then in the past few weeks a Vox VBW3000 (Bill Wyman) bass has turned up. Since it’s arrived I have played little else, though I do need to get a set of flat rounds on there for that authentic mid-60s sound. -
Covers bands - are they just parasites? (& how PRS works)
Teyeplayer replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
No, the parasites are often the guys that run the open mic nights. They go into a local venue that has had live music on for years and offer to run nights for a third (or less) of the usual fee. For a time they make it work, taking half of the money for their ‘expenses’ and giving out a tenner here or there to cover ‘fuel for the featured artist’. After three or four months they’ve exhausted every connection they have locally, the landlord calls time on it and the open mic guy moves on to do the same in another local venue. However, the landlord now knows he can get an evening’s entertainment for a fraction of the prior cost so lowers what he is willing to pay accordingly. Local music scene dries up. Cue open mic guy ranting on social media that nobody will pay for live music anymore when nobody will book him and his band. Seen it a few too many times now.- 160 replies

Help me decide which new Epiphone Bass to buy!!!!!
Teyeplayer replied to Denny DeGorio's topic in Basses
Haven’t tried both so can’t compare. However, I recently tried a mate’s Jack Cassidy. Lovely thing, great tone and played really well. One is now on my shortlist of future purchases. Sorry I can’t be more specific! -
Yes, all included. It was £106 for the cab and £20 for shipping and tax. Took a little longer than predicted to arrive and a few days to dispatch (had to chase a little), but still well worth it and great value.

My OR110 arrived on Wednesday, what a cracking little cab! Partnered with my Warwick Gnome I have the ultimate in grab and go rigs. There’s a decent enough punch and volume level for my fortunately sympathetic drummer too. I’m sure there are better sounding rigs, but I doubt it for this price point and purpose. Really impressed. Thanks for the heads-up OP, I wouldn’t have found this if it wasn’t for your thread.

What are you listening to right now?
Teyeplayer replied to Sarah5string's topic in General Discussion
Loving the new Midlake album; Bethel Woods is a cracking track: -
Soaking them in vinegar should do a similar thing to alcohol. You also get to lick your fingers between songs and think about the chippy on the way home.

More unmitigated optimism on pricing
Teyeplayer replied to Steve Browning's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I remember having an ‘interesting’ to do with a well known London based seller. Had a fender Tele with a strat neck that was overpriced and he claimed all original and ‘opened box never used’. Called him out on it and he started trying to sell it to me, was hilarious. There are some utter fools about. -
My first bass was one of these. Got it for £50 from a backstreet guitar shop in Northampton (‘Pauls’ if anyone remembers it) when I was 13/14. Sold it to a mate when I was 16, but really should have kept it. I hover over these every time one comes up.

My current pet hate is the use of mods/‘upgrades’ as a reason to uncharge on a second hand guitar or bass ‘because it owes me X amount’. I’ve never seen a change to original spec as a significant problem (unless it’s the form of sausage fingered non-reversible mod found on eBay), a swap of pickups or pots really isn’t that big a deal. However, there is definitely a current fad of trying to charge closer to the price of a new one because a few changes have been made. Post-covid inflation of secondhand instruments has severely impinged the revolving door of GAS.

Been looking for something suitable for home use whilst we clear out in prep for moving, this is perfect. Thanks for the heads up, just ordered for £126! Incredible. If that includes customs it can’t be bettered.

I know it makes me a heretic, but I also like the combination of the maple neck with oiled walnut body that Rickenbacker have done in recent years.

These are lovely basses. I got the orange one that was doing the rounds recently; love the neck on it, weight is just right, balanced perfectly. Please excuse the kids toys and general chaos!

Think about the back line logically -not what you think looks cool. A row of stacks competing to be heard at the dock and duck is overkill. Funnily enough, the audience tend to leave or loiter far away from the stage as it’s not a pleasant experience and your hearing never recovers. I wish I’d learnt this twenty years ago!
