Awesome band, I have most of their albums too
Me too. Another of those UK bands that is big in the US and gets little recognition here. A bit like The Fixx.

Experienced Bassist Seeking Covers Work in the North West
BassBunny replied to tobiewharton's topic in Bassists Available
Hi Tobie, Have you seen this? http://basschat.co.uk/topic/257645-function-band-seek-souldiscofunk-bassist-with-backvox/ -
We use Samson Q7's, in fact apart for the main singer who has a Shure wireless mic, we all use them and have retired our SM58's. Actually prefer the Samson's.

A standard Jazz has 2 Vols and a Tone, (well not really a tone control just a treble bleed). That said if you want to make it Vol/Blend/Tone it is pretty simple if you are OK with soldering. I've got a diagram of the wiring for V/B/T if you want it. Just drop me a PM and I'll send it. If not another vote for Ki0gon. He will provide a complete loom and as long as you document where everything went, you can always put it back.
We have been asked to play at a large event - with a large number of paying guests. My question is this - Would you up your fee because you know you will be playing to significantly more people than you usually would?
No, I would charge more because it is a large event and will take a considerable amount of time/planning compared to a typical pub gig. You won't be able to just rock up at 8.00 and truck your gear through the crowd, set-up etc. You will more than likely need to be sorted before the first guest arrives. We do mostly Corporate/ Weddings and have a standard questionnaire sheet we go through before even mentioning money.

Just bought Mark's BG250. He had organised a meet at my place to drop off the BG250 and pick up an amp head he had agreed to buy. Great guy to deal with and really appreciated the personal delivery. The 3 of us had a good bass related chat and it was nice to meet Mark and Rob. A real gent and a pleasure to deal with.

Function Band seek Soul/Disco/Funk Bassist with BackVox
BassBunny replied to lefunk's topic in Bassists Wanted
A great opportunity for someone. We know LeFunk very well and they are probably the most organised band I have ever come across. Good Luck with the search guys. -
It's a Tanglewood Overwater not the UK hand-built variety.
It's still unbelievably cheap for a Tanglewater. Includes case and delivery for less than......... well you name it! Played one of the pre-production ones up in Moffat a couple of years ago and they are the real deal.

Public Liability Insurance Question ??
BassBunny replied to KennysFord's topic in General Discussion
Pete, go on NWB Community Blog and click the AmpBand link. Speak to them and they will have a solution for you. Best company we have dealt with. If you go via NWB, they get a tickle as well. -
That's never happened to me, they last years. I think the best thing to do is get yourself along to Bass Direct near Warwick and try a load of instruments and see what you like and what grabs you. You'll undoubtedly get a load of specific suggestions but until you play one you won't know if it's right for you. I would tend to stay away from Fender 5-strings though based on the ones I've played.
Spot on Sean. Sure you will get pages of advice mostly based on what the posters use. I would agree about Fender 5 Strings, but if you are fixed on a passive 5er, try and get to the London Bass Guitar show and try an ACG Graft. Alan builds them in passive format and it's a hand built bass for the price of a mass produced Fender. Personally never had a problem with active basses and dying batteries, but each to his own. Same with amplification. With your budget there is a lot of choice, so try as much as you can, preferably after you have bought the bass.

The price on the MB MultiAmp is a bit steep at £1000. Only £80 cheaper than a new/boxed/warranty one.

Pal of mine got a US P Bass for £125 from CC In Eccles. Later on got a Mustang Bass from same one for £40. He cleaned them both up and after using them for a couple of years traded the 2 of them for a brand new Stingray 5.

Surprised no one has mentioned "Uptight". Worth it just to get the audience involved.

I just use Sweet MiDi player on a Laptop at home. When playing live, I wouldn't have a clue, that is the keyboard players domain. Sweet MiDi player does everything I need regarding the ability to do whatever I want with the 16 individual tracks.
-
I've got loads, mainly soul/motown/party band sort of stuff. We used to offer the function band as a 3 piece and used the midi files for drums/guitar/brass. Got vitually all of them free on t'internet. Use Vanbasco, a midi search engine, to try and get what you want. There are plenty of free midi editing tools available that allow you to change instrument types, key, speed etc.
Funny how jack to jack worked perfectly well with 200w, 300w and 400w valve amps back in the day.
Probably because Speakon hadn't been invented then, so no real choice. Jacks will work perfectly well, but if starting from scratch it is worth considering Speakons for the numberous advantage they present.
-
If you haven't already got connecting cables, get Speakon and not Jack. Standard Jacks are only really good enough for around 150W reliably and one of your cables will be carrying the signal to both cabs as the RH450 only has 1 output. Also decent cable. OBBM is the man as he only makes cables using the the best available components.

WEM Columns "10 drivers suitable for bass?
BassBunny replied to Animalbeats's topic in Amps and Cabs
But I, I, I saws them at Live in Pompeii......on the video....
Are you sure they are PA columns Roger Waters is using? They look more like WEM Bass Cabs. -
Ok, last question(s) from me. Is the statement above about speaker sizes a generally held view or is it more down to personal taste? My Ashdown combo has a 12" speaker so would, say, a 2 x 12 or another single 12 extension cab give me the best results or would a single 15 or possibly a 4 x 10 work just as well (assuming it is an 8ohm cab as established earlier)? I guess the tone that I am after comes in to the equation?
If you do a search on this very forum, you will find loads of posts on this subject. The likes of Bill Fitzmaurice have provided plenty of info to help make an educated decision. I tried a 1x12 with ax1x15 and it didn't work for me. 2x112's worked better. At the end of the day, you pays your money and takes yer choice.

SaxyBassist. I bet after this you want to stick to Sax. If you want to add an RS210 to your combo then YES YOU CAN. It will be perfectly safe and if you like the sound, it's your right to spend your money how you wish. In fact any 8 Ohm cab will do but I would stick to 10" speakers. Mixing speakers can have varying results. On the up side it will handle considerably more power than you are going put through it and if you decide the combo won't deliver the power you want for gigging, you can just buy a more powerful amp head and off you go. I am a bit OCD, and would want to pair the combo with it's matching extension cab, ie the Ibanez 1x10, just so it would look right. That would snooker the upgrade path though. Hope that answers what you asked as this post seems to have gone into information overload.
-
"Is that good or bad? " Well neither really. It is just the fact there was an assumption that adding an extra cab would give you some additional power, it won't. It will however give you a greater speaker area, move more air and sound louder than the combo on on it's own. The only issue I can see with adding a 2x10 is that the 150w going to the extension cabinet will be shared between the 2 speakers, (75w each), whereas the speaker in the combo will be getting the full 150w. The thing is, if you've tried it and like it, go for it. You are now getting into the realms of speaker efficiency and that is a whole new can of worms. Personally I would use the matching Ibanez 1x10 extension cab. I did an experiment with my Markbass CMD121P and added various different 8Ohm extension cabs, none sounded as good as the NY121, which is designed for the job.

I think if you check further you will find the 3110 is already running at 4 Ohms, and thus the maximum 300W. The internal speaker has two 8 ohm voice coils wired in parallel thus you have the full 300 watts with the internal speaker. When you plug in the external speaker one of the 8 ohm windings is disconnected. So although an additional speaker will move more air, you already have the full 300W as the combo stands. Here's the info from the user manual.

The swiss army knife of basses. I've had 3 of them and ended up with what IMHO is "the" best combination. Blueburst with a maple fingerboard. Under orders to get rid of all basses over 8lbs so it went. Really miss it. You can get just about any sound you want out of it. Not wishing to appear pedantic but it Isn't actually active. The tone controls are passive, so just bass & treble "cut", with a line driver amp in series with the output.

Hi Craig and welcome. As someone else who saw the error of his ways and switched from guitar to bass, I can only relate my experiences. First you need to establish what works for you. I quickly realised that certainly initially I needed 1:1 tuition and found a good teacher. Videos, books etc. didn't work for me, but we are all different. My tutor quickly spotted all the bad habits I brought over from guitar. More importantly I was given "homework" and that made me practice properly. With anything else I could always put off practice until tomorrow and tomorrow never came. I still have the odd lesson just to check the bad habits haven't returned. If t'internet works for you, Scott Devine & MarloweDK do great lessons. Book wise, almost anything by Ed Friedland although I used "Funk Fusion Bass" by Jon Liebman is great and starts with the essentials of position of bass, correct fingering etc. Good luck and sure there will be more suggestions.
