Both a discipline...but you'll probably find a lot of players practice slap for 50% of the time and then try and squeeze it into a gig..which should take up less that 1% of the playing...if that. hmmmmmmmmm....
-
Or use Realplayer....

I can't see what the difference is apart from the an extra 50watts on the badge. Quite happy with a TFB550-B but doubt I'd say no to an upgrade..just not sure I can jusity it. I have never run out of room with 550...and I've taken it to about 2 on the dial...and played large stages and halls with this either not through FOH...don't ask....or through the monitors. What I like most about the amp..and there are a few things that are great..is how the amp just keeps going up in volume without losing the sound you wanted in the first place...so I'd say it amps up VERY well. As good as any other amp I've used, and then the tone is so easy to get. If your bass sounds good, then you hardly ever have to touch the 4 band Para EQ. True plug'n'play, IMO. Great amps

The site is ok for me...but it is a shame if we lose worthwhile users over it.

(2010/11) American Deluxe Fender Ps and Js - experience?
JTUK replied to Musicman20's topic in Bass Guitars
That is a great looking bass... I'd have a decent tort plate on that first thing. The thing about pre amps is that people might look for and expect extreme tone shaping whereas you really want to use it sparingly, IMO. If I was in the market for another 5..I'd look closely at that...for sure, but I have J5's more than covered. s -
I have the bass a bit high so the angle of my plucking wrist is cocked quite acutely... I don't pluck, btw. Out of all the things people might comment on...this crops up the most. They don't know how I do it..I don't know what they are talking about. Beats some of the more banal questions though...

yup... it's another bloody band thread, my apologies in advance
JTUK replied to johnny_frog's topic in General Discussion
Bands have a set shelf life, IMO..but that singer sounds an idiot and you are better off without him, if that is how he carries on. At least you have gotten the 'disappearing act' over with..as he surely would have pulled this stunt at anytime in the band's life. I'd try and make a point that he misses being in your band, rather than you miss him.. -
Don't touch the 4....use the 5 exclusively..and play like a 4..as chris said...using the string the way you might anchor on a pickup. Then step out occasionally and go to the low B string.

sounds a bit crap to me..???
-
There are some things that almost MUST have a pick, but I dumped it so long ago, I couldn't go back. But if you want to break any mould of playing...be it slap, double thumb or whatever, you are going to have to nail a regime and stick with it. It will soon fall by the wayside if you don't.

Happy to say these are good covers and the company is very easy to deal with, IME. Quick delivery time as well -
All sorts of ways you can end up with an unfeasibly high action on a vintage Hofner, e.g. 1. The neck has moved due to the glue drying out, and is just beginning its "pen-knife" manoevre. 2. The neck has moved previously and been badly repaired, leaving it in permanently the wrong position. 3. The floating bridge has been fixed in place using double-sided tape ... raising the entire assembly by 2mm. 4. The floating bridge has never been "matched" to the curve of the archtop, the bridge is too high, the bass sounds complete crap. 5. Or, of course, it could just be a bad set-up.
It wasn't the only one... I really struggled to find a bass I wanted to play thru and demo an amp. REALLY struggled.... and there were quite a few name basses in there I knew I should have taken a set of allen keys...and I will definitely take my own basses up there next time.

It really depends what you'll work for... We decided we would want £200-250 per man for a 5 piece and a 2 hr set but since that is unlikely, we aren't going to bother. If you will work for £100 per man, then that seems a reasonable fee to ask for. I'd put NY's above xmas eve money-wise...and if the pub is ticketed, I'd ask for £750 for NYE...

I would add another bar...but can't or don't really want to carry it, tbh. I T-bar/4 LEDS covers nearly 90% of gigs..where we take our own lights. The basic presets are not easy to ID...or retain, once found, so am thinking about using DMX to program a light show from a laptop possibly. That will add just a few more minutes to set-up. We don't have an extra pair of hands so a simple trigger would have to be enough. But we are getting to the limit of what we can carry in the cars..and we still have a sub issue.

If the Hofner bass I saw the other day is anything to go by..it was the worst one in the shop in terms of action...and that was in a shop with more than a good few basses in it... try 40-50 and counting..??? Anyway, I didn't pick it up as I just can't be doing with trying to play something like that so couldn't really say how its sounds. Mind you, Macca's live sound on Hofners isn't good either, IMO..but that is another thing. Surprisingly, the bass with the lowest looking action was a T-Bird of some sort. Just sayin'....
-
Looks great to me...but you'd have to put some time into them to see where they sit alongside other S-Jazzes and then how much do they cost. I would have suggested £1700-2100 but that puts them in range of a lot of other very good examples, IMO... It goes without saying that is you are buying new, it doesn't want to be a whim, esp with something like this. I am thinking about a new commission and know I will 'lose' off list price, but then I am will not be selling it on for a good few years..for sure.
-
Do both and keep the pick going..but have a word with the gtr about encroaching on your sonic space... The first thing a decent gtr should do if he knows where he overpowers a mix, is adjust his sound accordingly. This means, roll off some of that bass. First rule of... IMO.

I would say always pay out for quality. I've spent the last few weeks checking out various names and I have to say I was NOT impressed. But sure...SH is always a way to hedge against top $

Walk and work on what works.. Other than that...go out and find new guys. -
We use the brand from Thomann. A single bar of 4 is light, easy carry and set-up. DMX capable.. so expandable, and easily provides light for a 5mtr staging area, Limited power draw and no heat so these are a good option for a pub. Rooms that require full P.A require more lights but then we hire in. The light unit seems good but the carry bags and stand is where they cut costs. It is better this way round. £300 for a decent pub rig is worth the money, IME.
