1. Although IME, 2x12 is not a 410 killer in a general sense. It may cope with the volume element well enough but my 2x210 or a 410 cabs are way pokier throughout the range in terms of projection and clarity than 12's. You can hump the 12's if you like..but at the expense of another frequency, IMO...so it is very much a case of horses for courses. Some people will get a result out of this and like it..others will not and I am in the latter camp so far. All cabs are compromises, IMV so find out which ones you can live with.
2.
They've seen it all before and played by better players so NO Jaco and definitely NO slapping!
Definitely. PIck an atmospheric piece from someone like Floyd and play high haunting solo lines under pinned with as may pads as you can in the arrangment. You might have to move the key to accomodate this... Just be original...not flash. They'll see flash all day, every day.
3. I have KA's on mine..albeit with a JE..and the sound is very lively. I would think the sheer quality of MP's work would make this a steal at the price. Have a bump.
4. I thought the idea was good for a fretless, maybe...... not so convinced there is much or anything to gain over a well fitted wooden neck. It would have to be very much better, as they look fawful.. IMO
5.
I usually sound like I've never touched a bass before when I try one in a shop. I play an open note & then twiddle the knobs to see what they do. Then I just mess about playing notes & trying to get fret buzz or anything else that I don't want, then the assistant comes over & takes it off me.
ha ha ..me too.
6. Might have wanted a closer look at the AC5 in sunburst on here a few months ago. But I have the basses I want also, so...??
7. You'd sound a dick if you did that in a shop...
8. If they know me at all...they'll have seen me play. If I was in a shop and fancied a play on a bass..I would just go through my little sound check type thing..which is a bunch of stuff which tells me what the Bass/amp/cab is doing on that room...so same applies to the shop. I wouldn't be concerned whether the shop or whoever thought I could play or not.
9. If you don't play enough, then indeed you don't need them
10. A shame, I hope he recovers well.
11. What's the problem... it isn't working and you want to leave. Tell them it has been good at times, you aren't happy and so you WILL be leaving. If they push it and what to know more..tell them about the real reason..if that is the real reason. If your mind is made up... then come straight out and say you'll work to such and such a date and that is it.
12. Tbh... you have to review whether these places are worth playing if space and sound is such a compromise. Might not be the answer you were expecting, but we wont do this sort of thing anymore. If the place is small then volume becomes the issue as too confined as space is very bad for everyones hearing... and then enjoyment goes out of it etc etc etc.. We need, for example, a min of 5 sq mtrs. I refuse to have the cymbals going off in my ears or in my back.
13. Interesting colour. in a good way ..!!
14. I've got it on now...but am posting here instead. I am glad people are liking her as with her vocal talent she probably deserves to get somewhere, but...whenever I listen to her all I hear is bla bla bla Shame..
15.
and a 5 string version Precision reviewed by Ed Friedland
Doesn't work as a slap sound, IMV.... which is probably why you don't see too many without a J pickup in there
16. Sad news. All the best in new venture
17.
Luckily no one on BC landed one of those ones, they all seem to have bagged the exception to the rule... especially now they are vintage.
Ha ha ... have to say my 70's Jazz was a total dog and pretty much the worst serious bass I ever owned. I don't find this unusual at all...as my mate had a 62 P bass which I thought was unplayable as far as I was concerned. Also..was harrangued at a gig recently with a guy picking up a early 70's P-bass for £500. I admit I would have been interested at that price, but it didn't play well. Never heard it though, and maybe I could have set-it up to work for me...but I would have kept it only to sell it later. I don't have this nostalgic feeling that a bass of a certain vintage is worthy. It may well be..and it just as easily may well not be. IMLE, of course..
18. Looks like their Silverado 4x8" cab to me...???
19. I take two...and choose on the day. I kinda of know which bass I'll start to sound check with..and then refine that decision or not.
20. They make them because they are better in a lot of cases and people want that. Fender had a down period and others jumped in You can say that Fender got it right very early on but then stood still TOO long. Maybe the quality took a hit...as many 70's basses might attest. Fenders are iconic so people just run with that template and there is room in the market. I thought Fender were very slow reacting to a better option to the plate bridge and active, for example... To some, a Fender is still THE bass, though.
21.
I love my peavey TNT although I do pair it with a guitar amp. If anyone wants to hear the rig mic'd it's on myspace.com/nologorock One day i'll hopefully get a Tmax head. I play drums in a band and the bassist uses the above rig. I once asked a fellow bassist from the audience what he thought of our sound, and the first thing he said was "yeh, I never like the Peavey sound". WTF?!? It's got an EQ on it! It's not a set sound!
Well, kind of...IMO. the overall tone was plastic, though, ....but they aren't alone in that by any means. Just as Ampeg, TE had typical sounds, so did PV.... I had a BW combo for ages and it was a banker... it did every gig for eons..but I pushed the hell out of it to get it loud enough, and it wasn't a good sound by any means when throttled. It wasn't that good when running normally.... Saved my bacon over the years though... If it does a decent job, then it is ok. The P.A cabs are fundimental and ..as always with PV, quite robust, so get used time and time again as they are reliable. If you get anywhere near discerning with sound, though, look elsewhere, IMO I think I would rather trust a PV PA rig than some JBL....which sounds mad, until you get some of that cheap tat go wrong again and again. They don't make them like they used to...but I think PV actually do. That is what they are good for. and maybe what people like and trust. There is a lot ot be said for that as well, IMO.
22. yup...looks like you are going to get caned....but.. First off, you have to try this out in context and see how loud they want to push it. I would guess any band doing Foo's type stuff are going to want that gtr wall of sound which doesn't auger well on quite a few fronts. If they run half stacks loud, they'll bury most drummers and force him to hit/play so loud and then you will have to compromise so much bass sound-wise..by trimming this and that..that your only chance is to end up with a sound that can be heard..but you'll likely hate and full of compromises. But hey..your gtrs might sensible and run decent volumes and you'll be fine..and everyone will not end up deaf. Get set-up in rehearsal and see how things go... start from a quiet sound and MAKE SURE everyone is conversant with a sound that works. Bear in mind that gigs, volumjes might go silly, but this is a chance to band mix the sound and set parameters that everyone is aware of... There is no point if you are loud in one area..gtrs..and everything struggles ..ie, vox, bass and drums. Marching in there with a fridge for a rig is the wrong way to go about this...as in I'm all right, I have the volume covered with this rig deal..!! Consider most venues can't handle the volumes that some bands can and DO, put out. Get the mix right and work from there. I think you will need a more powerful rig but hope that will not up the ante with gtrs going louder.
23. IIRC, that is a pretty clean and defined sound so you might want to start with how the bass all fits together because if you can't get that to work..no amount of add-ons will be able to rescue the sound. All they can do is enhance what is there...so a good strong resonance is the start-off. This can be why cheaper basses can be so hit and miss..and you are paying..on the better basses, for someone to be very good at putting this thing together. That is not to say that you have no chance but I'll pile money into quality parts and decent wood.
24. Not really surprised. I heard a pretty decent demo of this stuff..and altho it was just that, a demo and not a gigging situation..it sounded good.
