Cliff Williams is for many the pinnacle of pick players, the ultimate metronome! That was a live link so the impact of his pick tone is lost in the poor sound quality, if your not aware of his awesome pick tone JTUK you need to get some AC/DC in your life!
Yep..gotta say that AC/DC don't register on my radar much even though their drummer plays locally here.. and I do know that the bass players forte is straight 8's with a pick..just that you wouldn't know it from that link. Also got to say a MM with a pick..?? that could a hell of a lot of attack. Overkill potential is HUUUUGGEE there, IMO. But anyway..............
-
Great AC/DC link but am I missing something..? How does that sell a pick sound because if you didn't know how the guy played, you would never be able to tell one way or another. Didn't play it right to the end though..
-
I don't use gear like that because it never did the job for me... Cheap has less to do with it. I spent years on make-do sounds because of inadequate gear and I wont do it again...by any sort of choice.
-
17db would be my pick. But then I wouldn't play that close to the drums or in very very confined spaces either.
-
I'd go for 2x1210... that way you get close to a 410 with 2 lighter carries. Not a cheap way to do it though... but 4 10's on a gig is very hard to beat IMO. I certainly haven't managed so far with 2x112's... altho I can get a lovely low end, it just can't do the hard high yards, IME.

We still talking one cab solution here..?? I can say the 10's of a Goliath are quite mid punchy but the mk11 is massive with very little boom. Bang for buck at £350 in the FS pages for a SWR610 with PAS 10"'s... pretty unbeatable IMO if in good nick. I run mini 12 and 10 inch rigs but another 610 is on the wish list....no doubt about it.

see...just goes to show this get interesting when they get a bit more lively... Fine line admittedly..and not sure if a mod wants all that grief, tbh..

That inate extra....?? best sumed up for me, like this. Gazza... for example.. Couldn't string two sentences together, pretty much, but was two or three moves ahead of his teammates. Football made sense and was easy for him whereas as others were journeymen by comparison...and generally in a field of sporting excellence as far as most other people who 'played' football were concerned. I mean, we can all kick a ball about..and some work very hard to make the most of their physical attributes..and then there is another level that very very few inhabit. Gazza is still regarded as the best British player of his generation..and there has been no one since, and that was 15 plus years ago...as yet...!! That is what I regard as that inate something extra.
-
I think you need to make the distinction about talent and progress. Hard work can get the motor skills up to a very high level...but that inate extra something..??? you can't teach that. IMO.

A tube is a faff to me... just coil the strings up loosely and lay them in a largish container. They will never lay flat so you don't have to worry about residue dirt on the bottom...and if that is the case, then you need to change the meths. A tupperware container and lid and one bottler of meths is good to go...and cheap too. Other substances might work better but access and availability...and price..? might be an issue

Most familiar with the Goliath. I thought the mk ll was a classic rear ported cab..Huuuuge lows and and the ability to cut through loud bands. Not sure how the mk lll is different but I'd think it is front ported. I also prefer rear by choice but that is just me. At their time, the Goliath was as good a cab as any, IMO..but have probably lost a lot of ground..as has most SWR gear since they went corporate. Ampeg ST410HLF...a big cumbersome beast and not a patch on the SWR. Quite basic. Don't know EBS close up. If the gig was a funk type thing..EBS and SWR would be at the front out of the cabs you have listed. Ampeg will look good in a rock band...can't think of much else to say about it, tbh. If size and weight aren't an issue... give the Goliath Snr 610 a look. You could be able to pick up a SH one for around £300-350..and that would be a thunderous cab, IMO. Casters and wheels help out here for cabs this size, IIRC, the Ampeg and the SWR Goli 610 have them.

Personally, I wouldn't sub mix the vocals above all else. They would be the last thing, IMV and sub mixing would be a stop-gap. I'd look at bigger mixers

I only have time for a 5 minute argument, is that ok...?
I caught the end of Pulse and watched most of Bonnie R as well! Helps to use live pause and watch on a bit time delay so you can zap through the dodgier songs
Someone recommended Pulse to me.... and I am glad I watched it but far prefer 'Delicate sound of Thunder' song-wise so at least have dealt with getting that DVD or not. The TV show was only 45 mins or so... I assume the show/DVD was longer..??? I think Pulse leanrt a few things production wise from DSOT though and is better made from that POV..IMO. A big fan of Bonnie Rait but that 'Friends' thing didn't quite come off for me.... Still...Sky Arts is a channel full of little gem performances generally, IMV.

In reply to the OP, I'd say it pretty much was...but there are other thing in there as well.
But he didn't personally attack the poster, he just said he thought he was talking a lot of sh*t. The poster then took the position that BBC was opposed to everything he had ever said - blowing it all out of proportion, essentially - and BBC repeatedly stated his position that he had one narrow but strongly held opinion that he was expressing and the guy shouldn't get so carried away. BBC didn't really do anything wrong, he just expressed an opinion in his own way and got marked as a 'troublemaker' for it. He really wasn't, he was just a plain speaker.
Happens a lot here.... oh well..!! It is called differnce of opinions and some can either live with it or they can't. There might be a fine line between standing your ground and debating and knowing when to bail out...not as a sense of weaknest but just that it doesn't matter so very much and you have better things to do. Today, I will do the latter..as it is a beautiful day and I am going to play golf...so I hope none of you lot try and pick holes in my posts to stop me...

[sub]No.. couldn't stick with it....have just trawled through Pulse and Bonnie Rait for the last few hours. [/sub] [sub]Will catch it next time when they repeat it.[/sub]
I really didn't realise so many people were closed off from one method to the other depending on which camp you fall in and I never have to change EQ settings between songs with or without a pick, maybe take some top off using the bass EQ which isnt exactly an effort is it? I can honestly say that the idea of having to conciously stick to one technique or the other is no different to saying I will only ever play the notes C E G and F for the rest of my playing days as I have given up on A D and B.
One of the most ridiculous statements to appear in BC for a long time, IMO. It has nothing to do with stubborness and a slavish penchant to play one technique above all else, IMV....rather more to do with the fact that some people are more comfortable with one technique over another..that they have put SO much more time in on it...and they sound so much better or play better because of that....in their opinion. That is not to say no one is capable of getting great pick sounds. Here are 3 ..IMO T-Bone Wolk, Anthony Jackson and Bobby Vega. check out Randy jackson for more of the same.. My particular fave is late 60's west coast film scores...from pretty much any studio ... I am far and away better with fingerstyle than I ever was with a pick, I hear more of the sounds I want to play and can adapt my style accordingly. I can get a decent pick approximation..to my mind and ears, and if that fails I can resort to a dodgy use of a pick for simple tunes should I want to. I just wouldn't sell myself on it.. Jeez..!! some people read just what they want into some things.. that is what I would call being closed off...??

[sup]I never recall him having a great sound whenever I saw him... but this is the Live and Dangerous Tour Video I am most talking about.[/sup] [sup]Very muted pick attack on a P-bass seems to be his stock in trade sound.[/sup] [sup]T-Bone Wolk did the same sort of thing..but he seemed to use a lot of compression and it worked better, IMO.[/sup]

Fender basses: not badly made but badly set up?
JTUK replied to bassist_lewis's topic in Bass Guitars
hmmm a bass marked up at £2100 and not playable from an action POV. I don't feel inclined to have to change it that much in order to want to pick it up. It is not like a low-ish action is alien to most bass players.. I would have had to take allen keys just for the bridge..and I think that is a step too far. Attending to the neck is way out on order. My conclusion was that this shop wasn't that concerned about the instruments it had for sale and they may well have been sitting in the window for ages..maybe a few years and moved around their branches. History of kit is an intangible thing at the best of times...but this doesn't auger well, IMO..at all..!!
